The Webbed Awakening

🕷️ Chapter One: The Webbed Awakening

Allisa Marbury, a sixteen-year-old from Asheville, North Carolina, much preferred the indoors ,air-conditioned, clean, and most importantly... spider-free. Her intense arachnophobia made her avoid even the tiniest corners of their basement at home.

Her mom, Kina, however, believed nature healed all wounds even irrational fears. She had planned this weekend getaway with the hopes that fresh air, tall trees, and quality family time would bring them closer. She packed their family SUV with hiking gear, snacks, a foldable grill, bug spray (a lot of it), and enough camping supplies to survive an apocalypse.

The journey was supposed to be simple, a two-hour drive to a state forest, followed by a hike to a hidden lakeside camping spot  read about online. But nature, as always, had plans of its own.

As they made their way down a narrow dirt road, the car's tires suddenly spun into deep mud, sucking the vehicle into the earth like quicksand. Kina tried everything revving, rocking, even prayers whispered under her breath but the car was stuck. Permanently.

With daylight beginning to slip behind the treetops, Kina made a decision....grab the essentials and find a safe place to camp nearby. The kids groaned, but followed without much protest, lugging backpacks and gear through the mossy, pine-scented forest.

As they wandered deeper in, the scenery began to shift. The trees grew taller, ancient even, their thick branches twisting together like arthritic fingers. Golden sunlight poured in through the leaves in shards, catching particles in the air and casting a dreamy glow across everything. They passed a bubbling stream where frogs croaked in the distance and dragonflies hovered like nature’s helicopters. Birds chirped melodies from above, and a pair of deer darted across the trail, vanishing into the trees as quickly as they appeared.

Eventually, they stumbled upon a small clearing near a still lake that reflected the sky like a mirror. The air was fresh and sweet, the silence peaceful yet alive. It was the perfect place to set up camp.

As dusk fell, they built a fire, roasted marshmallows, and shared stories Kina animatedly recalling her clumsy teenage years, the boys arguing over who would win in a fight: a bear or a gorilla, while Allisa sat quiet, absorbing the moment like it might vanish. The firelight danced in her eyes, and for the first time in a while, she didn’t feel scared. She almost forgot about her fear.

But morning had other plans.

Kina was the first to wake. Stretching and yawning, she unzipped the tent and stepped into the golden light of dawn. Birds were already in chorus, and mist floated gently over the lake’s surface. She took a deep breath, smiled then froze.

Her eyes locked onto something ahead: massive webs stretched between the trees like gossamer bridges. Not the kind spun by tiny garden spiders these were thick, pulsing with dew, some easily the size of car windshields. Egg sacs clustered like grapes, twitching faintly. On one web, a huge spider sat unmoving, its legs long and arched, its body shining in the light like polished obsidian. Another web was eerily empty.

Kina’s heart clenched. They had unknowingly camped in the middle of *something else’s* home. And her daughter her brave-faced, but terrified-of-spiders daughter was still asleep in the tent behind her.

Kina took a careful step back, her eyes still scanning the forest. The silence now felt different. Heavy. Like the woods themselves were watching.
