Introduction
Year 1863 somewhere in England...
It was a cloudy Thursday with hints of gold in the sky.
At 8:00 a.m., the kindergarten gates opened, welcoming the very young children who arrived with their parents with warmth and familiarity.
But two faces stood out: little Lorna, 3 years old, with an introverted and curious look about the world, and her mother, whose face was obscured by the outside lighting.
Without saying anything, the woman let go of her daughter's hand. In front of them, one of the nannies was waiting for her with a smile and open arms.
Little Lorna slowly made her way toward the young woman, and they hugged.
-Good morning, Lorna... we've been missing you here,"
the woman said. Then, with a noticeable change of tone, she turned her eyes to the mother.
-Have a nice day, ma'am... your daughter will be safe here.
Without saying anything, the woman turned on her heel and left, while little Lorna watched her.
The hours passed normally and carefree.
The nannies watched the little ones playing with their arms crossed and a warm gaze.
Lorna stood in a corner, staring at a fixed point with her arms clasped around her knees.
One of the nannies whispered to another,
-I wonder what's going on, Lorna?"
The other young woman lifted and lowered her shoulders.
After about four hours, at 12 noon, it was time to go home.
The other children went to hug their parents while Lorna continued to wait patiently in absolute silence.
But Mom didn't arrive.
A few minutes later, poor little Lorna was standing with her little hand holding a nanny's while she stared at the door, her eyes fixed and slightly shining, not from happiness, but with a stoic expression that didn't understand the situation, and her head tilted slightly to the left.
The confused nanny tried to comfort her, saying,
-Maybe they're late. Do you think we wait a little longer Honey?"
And time passes...
And the light changes...
And the other children are gone.
But Lorna is still there.
Mom didn't come back.
...
They had completely forgotten about their only daughter and didn't even bother to look for her.
...
Then the nannies, not legally able to leave her there for that long,
made the decision to send her to the Sweetheart Orphanage for Special and Unfortunate Children.
