Capítulo 1

Después de los grandes incendios solares y los colapsos de las estaciones orbitales, la Tierra no era más que un mapa de cicatrices. La frontera entre México y lo que quedaba de los Estados Unidos era ahora una franja desértica, una línea de ceniza interminable llamada simplemente “El Gris”. Lucía Cervando nació del lado mexicano, en las ruinas de lo que alguna vez fue Nogales. Su abuelo solía decirle que, en tiempos mejores, uno podía cruzar con una sonrisa y un papel. Ahora, cruzar significaba jugarse la vida. Al norte, en lo que quedaba de Arizona, Jonás Reed, guardia de frontera de lo que quedaba de los EE.UU. Vigilaba los puestos automatizados que el Gobierno de Emergencia había dejado antes de abandonar el país. No había más órdenes. Solo quedaban quienes estaban.

Una noche, bajo la aurora boreal producida por la radiación, Lucía halló un dron caído. Dentro, había mapas de zonas donde todavía quedaban pozos de agua limpia. Sabía que no podía quedarse. La sequía mataba más rápido que cualquier bala. Con el dron al hombro, caminó hacia El Gris. Jonás la vio llegar. Tenía órdenes obsoletas que igual seguía. Pero no reflexionaba; el mundo que había dictado esas órdenes ya no existía. Cuando Lucía cruzó, no levantó las manos. Ni siquiera pudo levantar las manos. Solo le mostró el dron y una palabra en inglés pintada en su camiseta sucia: “Water” (que significa en inglés “Agua”).

Jonás bajó el rifle. Por primera vez en años, alguien no pedía paso. Pedía agua.

Entre las dunas de arena, bajo un cielo con heridas abiertas, dos sobrevivientes entendieron: La frontera había muerto. Solo quedaba el hambre y la sed... y quizás, la promesa de un nuevo comienzo.
