Cain's Ledge Chapter 1 Scenes 1-10
CAIN’S LEDGE
Set in the shadow of a rugged mountain ledge and centered around the historic Wilcox Inn, Cain’s Ledge follows three powerful families whose lives are bound together by secrets, ambition, romance, and revenge.
Character Overview
The Wilcox Family
Dr. Seth Wilcox: The eldest son of Daniel and Dr. Megan Wilcox. A respected physician and devoted professional, Seth appears to have the perfect life. Beneath the surface, however, his marriage to Tara is far from ideal.
Cory Wilcox: Owner and operator of the historic Wilcox Inn. The middle son has spent his life living in the shadow of his successful older brother Seth and his charismatic younger brother Trey. Cory’s lifelong romance with Sydney Lawson faces its greatest challenges yet.
Trey Wilcox: The youngest Wilcox son. Reckless, passionate, and unpredictable, Trey’s obsession with Ariel Miller pushes him toward dangerous choices that threaten everyone around him.
Daniel Wilcox: Patriarch of the Wilcox family and CEO of Balsam Fashions. Recently divorced, Daniel is determined to preserve the family’s reputation and power at any cost.
Dr. Megan Wilcox: Respected physician and former wife of Daniel Wilcox. Their divorce has left deep wounds throughout the family and exposed long-buried secrets.
THE LAWSON FAMILY
Sydney Lawson: A special agent with the Twin Mountain Police Department. Intelligent and determined, Sydney has been in love with Cory Wilcox since high school, but questions whether their future still lies together.
Tara Lawson Wilcox: Sydney’s ambitious older sister and Seth’s wife. Owner of Tara Designs & Boutique. Beautiful, manipulative, and driven by wealth and status, Tara will stop at nothing to protect her position.
Shawn Lawson: A college freshman with a good heart and a dangerous secret. Shawn’s hidden truth has the power to destroy several lives, including his own.
Justin Lawson: The youngest Lawson sibling. Honest and dependable, Justin often serves as the voice of reason amid the chaos surrounding him.
Nathan Lawson: A wealthy businessman who spent years traveling the world while neglecting his family. Now he wants a second chance with his children.
Tracy Lawson: Nathan’s estranged wife and mother of Sydney, Tara, Shawn, and Justin. Her absence has shaped the lives of everyone around her.
Patrick Lawson: Nathan’s younger brother. A successful attorney who represents Balsam Fashions and frequently finds himself entangled in family drama.
THE Garcia FAMILY
Samuel Garcia: A hospital janitor struggling with addiction, debt, and disappointment. Despite his flaws, Samuel deeply loves his family.
Grace Garcia: Samuel’s loyal wife of more than thirty years. Employed as the Wilcox family maid, Grace has become a trusted confidante within the Wilcox household.
Dr. Perry Garcia: The eldest Garcia child and Chief of Staff at the local hospital. Perry’s success stands in stark contrast to his family’s struggles.
Ian Garcia: Samuel and Grace’s son. Best friend to Shawn Lawson. Ian harbors resentment toward the wealthy families of Twin Mountain and longs for a better life.
Detective Devin Garcia: The newest detective on the Twin Mountain Police force. Ambitious and determined, Devin quickly becomes involved in several major investigations–and romances.
THE MILLER FAMILY
Jillian Miller: A single mother raising twin daughters while managing the dining room at Wilcox Inn. Constant financial pressures threaten to push her toward dangerous decisions.
Ariel Miller: Jillian’s popular and ambitious daughter. Beautiful and admired, Ariel has her future planned—unless Trey Wilcox destroys it first.
Ashley Miller: Ariel’s twin sister. Overshadowed her entire life, Ashley seeks acceptance in all the wrong places and may be headed for trouble.
THE STEELE FAMILY
Dr. Todd Steele: A respected physician with a dark and dangerous side. Todd hides secrets capable of destroying his family and career.
Quincy Steele: A local high school teacher trapped in a scandalous affair with her student, Trey Wilcox. Her choices threaten to expose everyone involved.
Kirby Steele: Daughter of Todd and Quincy Steele. Justin Lawson’s former girlfriend, Kirby struggles to find her place amid her family’s growing turmoil.
THE WHEELER SISTERS
Jenna Wheeler: A talented photographer for Balsam Fashions. Jenna shares a complicated romantic history with Daniel Wilcox that neither has fully forgotten.
Andrea Wheeler: Jenna’s younger sister and a rising model for Balsam Fashions. Ambitious and determined, Andrea has set her sights on Shawn Lawson.
SCENE 1 The episode opens with a sweeping aerial view of the Wilcox Ranch on a beautiful spring morning in northern New Hampshire. Rolling green hills stretch toward towering mountains in the distance. Crystal-clear streams wind through fields bursting with wildflowers. Apple trees are heavy with pink and white blossoms, their petals drifting gently on the breeze. The familiar theme song plays as the camera follows TARA LAWSON WILCOX riding horseback across the property. Her horse, Lily, moves gracefully through the fields while Tara sits confidently in the saddle. She is dressed in an elegant riding outfit that reflects both wealth and sophistication. For a moment, everything appears peaceful. Tara slows Lily as they approach the stables. She dismounts and leads the horse inside. With practiced ease, she removes the saddle and begins brushing Lily’s coat. A cloud of dust rises outside as a luxury sedan makes its way down the dirt road leading to the stable. SETH WILCOX steps from the vehicle. Dressed in a shirt and tie, his briefcase in hand, he looks exhausted. He pauses for a moment, watching Tara with the horse before walking toward her. Seth forces a smile.
SETH: How is Lily today?
TARA: I tried out her new shoes. I took her up to the inn and back. (Tara kisses Lily on the nose.) We had fun, didn’t we, Lily?
SETH: (Seth pets the horse absentmindedly.)Have you seen Cory yet?
TARA: He was on his way to see Sydney. He said he tried to catch you at the hospital, but you had just left.
SETH: I must have just missed him. (Sighing heavily.) I’ve had quite a day. I’ve got to be back in a couple of hours. I have a surgery scheduled.
Tara’s smile immediately fades.
TARA: What about our plans? It’s your father’s party tonight.
SETH: I’ll explain to my father why I can’t make it. He’ll understand.
TARA: That’s not the point, Seth. You made plans with your family.
SETH: (realizing she isn’t letting it go) I can’t control when there’s going to be an emergency at the hospital. That’s part of being a doctor.
TARA: And that’s always the answer.(Seth looks at her.) There’s always another surgery. Another patient. Another emergency.
SETH: What do you want me to do? Let someone die because my wife wants me at a party?
TARA: Don’t twist this around.
SETH: Then what are you saying?
TARA:( Tara sets down the brush. ) I can’t do this much longer. (The words hang heavily in the air.) I’ve done it for five years and it’s getting old. When you’re physically home, you’re not there mentally. You’re always thinking about work. You’re always somewhere else. (Softer.) I need more than just someone sleeping next to me at night.
SETH: (rubs the back of his neck, clearly frustrated.) Tara, I don’t need this tonight.
TARA: Well, I do.
SETH: I’ll take a couple of days off next week and we’ll go up to the cabin.
TARA: No.
SETH: No?
TARA: I don’t want another trip to the cabin. I don’t want another promise. (She looks directly at him.)I don’t want to do this anymore.
Seth stares at her. A tense silence follows. He turns and begins walking toward the stable entrance.
TARA: Seth. (He keeps walking.) Seth, we need to talk. I mean it, Seth.
SETH: I’ll talk to you later when you’re in a better mood.
TARA: No, damn it! (Seth stops). You’ll talk to me now. Or do you want me to schedule an appointment?
The comment hits a nerve. Seth slowly turns around.
SETH: (angry) Just say it, Tara. Cry divorce again. (He takes a step toward her.) Go run to Daddy. (Tara’s eyes narrow.) You wouldn’t have all the clothes, Lily, food, your boutique, jewelry, and everything else you want if it wasn’t for my career.
TARA: I would have all those things because of who I am and where I come from. (She steps closer.)But if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be where you are today.
SETH: I came from just as important a family.
TARA: Then why do you act like you built everything yourself?
SETH: Because I worked for it.
TARA: And I didn’t?
SETH: This isn’t a competition over whose bank account is bigger. (His voice grows colder). It’s a game you’re going to regret playing. (A dangerous smile crosses his face.) You always lose when you play against me, Tara. We’ve been down that road too many times.
TARA: What about me? (Her voice breaks). All alone at night...
Seth: (Seth laughs bitterly.) It’s always about you, Tara. (His words become increasingly cruel.) You’ve really suffered. (He claps sarcastically.) Flaunting yourself to anyone that had anything between their legs. (Tara looks stunned.) You’re a class act. Turning it all around on me so you can feel better. (He points at her.) Get a clue. You’ll never do better than this. (A beat.)The entire town knows you’re used goods.
Tara: You Bastard. (The slap echoes through the stable. Seth’s head snaps to the side. Both are breathing heavily. Tara’s eyes burn with rage.)No, Seth. (She steps closer)The entire town knows that I need a real man.
Before Seth can respond, the sound of a car approaching breaks the tension. Both turn. A police cruiser pulls up outside. SYDNEY LAWSON steps out wearing jeans and a casual jacket. Her badge is clipped to her pocket. She immediately senses the hostility.
SYDNEY: What’s going on? (Looking between them.) Are you two okay? (Tara shoots her a heated look.)
SETH: We’re fine, Sydney. (He puts an arm around Tara.) Aren’t we, dear? (He kisses Tara. She immediately pushes him away. Sydney notices everything.)
SYDNEY: I just stopped by to see if either one of you had seen Cory.
TARA: He’s been looking for both of you. I think he was headed to see if you were at the house.
SYDNEY: He was on his way to Father’s?
TARA: I think so.
SETH: We’ll talk later, Tara. (A warning more than a promise.) And I’m sure I’ll see you later.
SYDNEY: Yes.
Seth moves in, attempting one final kiss on Tara’s cheek before heading toward the house. The moment he disappears around the corner, the tension shifts. Sydney turns back toward her sister.
SYDNEY: Is everything alright, Tara?
TARA: No. (A long pause.) But it will be.
Sydney studies her carefully. Tara notices.
TARA: Don’t look at me that way.
SYDNEY: I’m sorry.
TARA: You always give me that judgmental look.
SYDNEY: That’s not fair.
TARA: You have no idea what I’m putting up with.
SYDNEY: (Sydney softens.) I’m your sister, Tara. I know you. (A beat.) And I’m here if you need anything.
Tara’s expression briefly cracks, revealing vulnerability beneath the anger. But just as quickly, the wall goes back up.
TARA: Everything is going to be fine. (She turns away and resumes brushing Lily.)
Sydney remains unconvinced. The camera lingers on the two sisters as spring petals drift through the stable doorway. FADE OUT.
SCENE 2 Outside of the high school, Trey and Ian emerge through the front doors as the final bell echoes through the halls. Students flood onto the campus, laughing and talking as they head toward buses, cars, and after-school activities. The school itself has a classic New England charm—red brick buildings, white trim, and towering maple trees beginning to show the first signs of spring. A cool breeze drifts across the courtyard. Ashley and Kirby hurry across the lawn, weaving through groups of students as they call after the boys.
Ashley- Trey! Ian! Wait up! (Trey and Ian stop as Ashley and Kirby finally catch up to them.)
Ian- What’s up, Ashley?
Ashley- Mrs. Steele just reminded me that my research paper still isn’t finished. She says if it isn’t on her desk before Spring vacation starts, she’s failing me for the assignment.
Ian- Kirby, your mother is impossible.
Kirby- She’s stuck in her ways. Once she decides something, nobody changes her mind.
Trey- Well, you’ve got two hours. And if you hadn’t been out partying all night with us at Cain’s Ledge, maybe you wouldn’t be in this position.
Ashley- That’s easy for you to say. How did you get so lucky? You didn’t have anything done when we left last night.
Trey- Ashley, you need lessons. There are certain ways to get around things. You’ve got to know how to charm people.
Kirby- It’s not easy charming my mother. You either had to be really charming or have one hell of an excuse.
Ashley- Well, somehow you can bend Mrs. Steele in ways the rest of us can’t.
Trey- Don’t give me so much credit.
Ian- (glancing across the courtyard) Hey Trey...check that out. (The camera follows Ian’s gaze. Across campus, Ariel and Justin are standing beneath a large maple tree, deep in conversation. Ariel laughs softly at something Justin says. The camera cuts back to Trey. His expression immediately hardens.)
Justin- I think they spotted us, Ariel.
Ariel- Justin, I really don’t want another scene with Trey. I’ll see you later.
Justin- Don’t just run away every time. We can’t hide it forever.
Ariel- It’s just easier right now. I can’t deal with his temper.
Justin- You’re brushing me off because you don’t want to deal with him later.
Ariel- Maybe. You’re right. It’s going to take time for everybody to adjust.
Justin- Everybody?
Ariel- Justin, you know what I mean. Trey and I were together for years. Around here people don’t think of us separately. They think of us as Trey and Ariel.
Justin- No. They think of you as Trey Wilcox’s girlfriend. His sidekick. Somebody who followed him around while he played king of the school.
Ariel- That’s not fair.
Justin- Isn’t it? He’s got everyone convinced he’s some golden boy. But we both know who he really is.
Ariel- We still have history.
Justin- History isn’t always something worth holding onto. (The camera returns to Trey and the others.)
Ashley- I didn’t think Ariel was stupid enough to start flaunting Justin around campus already.
Trey- Ariel and I aren’t finished yet. (Turning toward Kirby.) Kirby, your sexual appeal evidently didn’t keep him in your bed.
Kirby- He definitely seemed like he was enjoying it.
Trey- Evidently it wasn’t good enough.
Ian- Ashley wasn’t saying you were finished. She’s just surprised to see them together.
Trey- I don’t want to hear it. (His eyes remain fixed on Justin.)
Trey- Justin and I are going to have a discussion soon. I think he forgets how things work around here.
Ian- Kirby, aren’t you having a stroke seeing your pool boy with another client?
Kirby- Shut the fuck up. (The group exchanges uneasy laughs before Ariel and Justin approach.)
Ashley- (awkwardly) Justin, I wanted to ask if you still have that Hemingway book.
Justin- Yeah. It’s upstairs in my locker.
Ashley- Could I borrow it? Mrs. Steele’s breathing down my neck about this paper.
Justin- Sure. We can grab it now. (He glances at Ariel.) I’ll see you later. (Ashley and Justin exit toward the school. Ariel watches them leave before nervously turning toward Trey.)
Ariel- Bye, guys.
Ian- (senses the tension)I’ve got to get home. (Looking at Kirby.) I can give you a ride if you want. (Kirby exchanges a brief glance with Trey before nodding.)
Kirby- Sure. Ian- See you both later. (Ian and Kirby exit. Ariel and Trey are left alone. The sounds of the campus seem to fade into the background.)
Ariel- What?
Trey- It hurts, Ariel.
Ariel- What does?
Trey- Seeing you with him.
Ariel- Justin and I are just friends.
Trey- Friends. (He laughs bitterly.)
Trey- That’s what everybody says before they become something else.
Ariel- Trey—
Trey- Meet me at Cain’s Ledge tonight.
Ariel- What?
Trey- Just meet me there. It’ll be like old times. (He steps closer.) Before everything got complicated.
Ariel- I can’t. I’ve got to get home.
Trey- Please.
Ariel- Trey, no.
Trey- Just for a little while.
Ariel- I told you, I don’t want to be part of that scene anymore. The parties, the drinking, all of it.
Trey- That’s not what this is about.
Ariel- Then what’s it about?
Trey- Us. (Ariel looks away.)
Ariel- There is no “us” anymore.
Trey- Don’t say that. Ariel- We both need to move on. We need to grow up and focus on our futures. On where we’re going instead of where we’ve been. (Trey’s jaw tightens.)
Trey- Is that something Justin told you?
Ariel- This isn’t about Justin.
Trey- Isn’t it? (He grabs her arm. Ariel immediately stiffens.)
Trey- Please. Just a few minutes. I’ve got something I want to give you. (Ariel hesitates. His grip makes her uncomfortable, but she sees the desperation in his eyes.)
Ariel- Trey, I really have a lot to do tonight. (Trey releases her arm but his frustration remains.)
Trey- I’ve got to be at the Inn later. How about six-thirty?
Ariel- I’ll try. (Trey moves closer and leans in for a kiss. Ariel turns away. The rejection stings.)
Trey- You know what we had.
Ariel- I said I’ll try.
Trey- Don’t let me down, Ariel. (He pauses.) You’ve never let me down before. (Ariel says nothing.)
Ariel-No I haven’t
Trey- I’ve got to go talk to Mrs. Steele. (He backs away slowly.) I’ll be waiting. (He attempts another kiss on her cheek before turning and walking away.) Ariel remains frozen, watching him disappear into the school. The camera stays on her troubled expression before slowly panning toward a second-floor window. Inside the school, Justin stands silently watching everything. His expression makes it clear he saw the entire encounter. FADE OUT.
SCENE 3 A classroom inside the school. The final bell has rung. Empty desks sit in neat rows as late afternoon sunlight streams through the windows. Papers are stacked on Quincy Steele’s desk as she packs her bag for the upcoming spring break. The classroom door opens. Trey steps inside. Before Quincy can say anything, Trey quietly closes the door behind him. Quincy looks up, immediately uneasy.
Quincy- Trey? What are you still doing here?
Trey- I wanted to talk to you about my research paper.
Quincy- Then you can talk to me tomorrow morning. I’m leaving.
Trey- Tomorrow morning is too late. (Quincy sighs and places her bag back on the desk.)
Quincy- If this is about your grade, you already know my answer.
Trey- Do I?
Quincy- You haven’t handed in the assignment. There isn’t much to discuss. (Trey slowly approaches the desk.)
Trey- Everybody gets second chances.
Quincy- Not when they’ve ignored three deadlines.
Trey- You seem pretty determined to make an example out of me.
Quincy- No, Trey. I’m trying to teach you responsibility. (Trey laughs bitterly).
Trey- Responsibility. That’s rich.
Quincy- Excuse me?
Trey- Everyone in this town pretends to be something they’re not. (Quincy studies him carefully).
Quincy- What’s really bothering you? (Trey looks away for a moment. The confidence he normally carries begins to crack.)
Trey- You ever feel like no matter what you do, somebody else is always the favorite?
Quincy- This isn’t about a paper anymore.
Trey- Seth is the successful one. Cory’s the dependable one. Everybody knows exactly who they’re supposed to be.
Quincy- And you think nobody sees you?
Trey- They see what they want to see. (A long silence fills the room. Quincy softens slightly.)
Quincy- You’re smarter than you pretend to be, Trey.
Trey- Then why am I failing?
Quincy- Because intelligence isn’t the same thing as effort. (The words hit harder than Trey expected. He looks down at the unfinished paper in his hand. Quincy notices.)
Quincy- You actually wrote it. (Trey hesitates before placing the report on her desk.)
Trey- Most of it. (Quincy flips through several pages.)
Quincy- The Scarlet Letter. (Trey smirks.)
Trey- Thought you’d appreciate the symbolism.
Quincy- It’s rough. Incomplete. But it’s something.
Trey- So what happens now? (Quincy looks at the clock.)
Quincy- Spring vacation starts in two hours. (She closes the folder.) Finish the final section tonight and put it in my mailbox before eight tomorrow morning.
Trey- You’re giving me another chance?
Quincy- I’m giving you an opportunity. Don’t confuse the two. (For the first time, Trey seems genuinely surprised. Trey picks up his jacket.)
Trey- Maybe you’re not as impossible as everyone says.
Quincy- Don’t make me regret this.
Trey heads for the door. As he reaches it, the camera reveals a figure standing just outside in the hallway. Justin. He quickly steps back as Trey opens the door. Trey doesn’t notice him. But Justin’s expression says everything. He has heard enough to know something important happened inside that classroom.
SCENE 4 The Lawson Mansion. The front doors of the Lawson mansion open into a grand foyer. The house reflects Nathan Lawson perfectly—wealthy, traditional, and imposing. Dark mahogany wood lines the walls. Antique oil paintings hang beneath crystal sconces. A sweeping staircase dominates the room, curving upward to the second floor.
Cory stands alone in the foyer. His hands are buried in his pockets as he paces back and forth across the marble floor. Every few moments he glances toward the front door or up the staircase. He is anxious, distracted. Several moments pass before Nathan Lawson appears at the top of the stairs. Nathan descends slowly, carrying himself with the confidence of a man accustomed to being obeyed.
Nathan: Cory, thank you for waiting. There are a few things I’d like to discuss with you. Why don’t we go into my office?
Cory: Sure.
Nathan places a hand on Cory’s shoulder as they move down a hallway. They enter Nathan’s office. The office is every bit as impressive as the rest of the mansion. Dark oak bookshelves stretch from floor to ceiling. Leather-bound books fill the shelves. Behind a massive desk sits a fireplace.
On the mantel are framed photographs of Nathan’s children: Sydney in her police uniform, Tara at a charity gala, Justin at a baseball game, and Shawn smiling beside his college graduation photo. Above the fireplace hangs a large portrait of a much younger Nathan and Tracy Lawson on their wedding day. Tracy’s smile seems almost frozen in time.
Nathan walks behind his desk.
Nathan: Can I get you anything? A drink?
Cory: No thank you, Mr. Lawson. I actually stopped by hoping to see Sydney. Do you know where she is?
Nathan pauses.
Nathan: Sydney is exactly what I wanted to talk to you about.
Cory immediately straightens.
Cory: Is something wrong?
Nathan:No. Nothing’s wrong. She’s probably still down at the station (beat) Although I’m sure you’re just as disappointed as I am that she’s decided to return to her so-called profession.
Cory: It’s not that I don’t want her to have a career. I just worry. One day her luck is going to run out and she’s going to get hurt.
Nathan nods.
Nathan: Then perhaps you and I should discuss how to prevent that from happening.
Cory lets out a small laugh.
Cory: Sydney’s a strong-willed woman, Mr. Lawson. Once she makes up her mind, that’s usually the end of the conversation.
Nathan smiles.
Nathan: First of all, call me Nathan. We’ve known each other since you were a teenager (softly) Truth be told, you’re practically family. (Cory says nothing.) You’ve spent half your life with Sydney. Everyone assumes the two of you will eventually get married.
Cory:People make a lot of assumptions.
Nathan:Not unreasonable ones.(Nathan studies him carefully.) What I’m saying is that I want to make sure you and Sydney stay together.
Cory: I’ll always be there for Sydney.
Nathan:Will you?(The question catches Cory off guard).Because from where I’m standing, it looks like she’s drifting away from you.(Cory shifts uncomfortably.) And you know exactly why.
Cory: What are you talking about?
Nathan:Stop pretending.(leaning forward) His name is Devin Garcia.
Cory:Devin?
Nathan: I see the way Sydney looks at him.(A pause.) It’s the same way she used to look at you.
The words hit harder than Cory wants to admit.
Cory: I trust Sydney.
Nathan:So do I.(beat) What I don’t trust is human nature. (Nathan stands and walks toward the fireplace.) A handsome young officer. Long hours together. Dangerous situations. Shared experiences.(turning) You don’t think feelings develop under circumstances like that?
Cory:Sydney would never—
Nathan:I didn’t say she’d betray you.I said she’s changing.(Nathan returns to his chair.) Did you know they’ve become partners?
Cory:Yeah. Sydney told me.
Nathan:And you’re comfortable with that?
Cory:Not really. But what am I supposed to do? The chief assigns partners. Sydney loves her job. I want to support her.
Nathan: Support is one thing. Standing by while another man takes your place is something else.
Silence fills the room.
Nathan:Do you love my daughter, Cory?
Cory: Of course I do.
Nathan: Then fight for her.
Cory exhales heavily.
Cory: It’s not that simple. She wants independence. She wants her own life.I’ve got the Inn. She’s got the department.Sometimes it feels like we’re heading in two different directions.
Nathan:That’s exactly why I’m concerned.(Nathan rises again and walks toward the portrait of Tracy.)A relationship doesn’t survive on history alone. It survives because people choose each other every day. And lately I’m not sure Sydney is choosing you.
Cory: (Cory looks down.) Yes
Nathan: I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering if she’s falling for him.
Cory:No.
Nathan: You’re lying.
Cory doesn’t answer.
Nathan: I’ve known Samuel Garcia for years. He’s worked at the hospital forever. Not a good man. Not a hard worker. A Janitor. But his son? (Nathan shakes his head.) That boy has ambitions bigger than his station.
Cory: Sounds like you have a problem with his father, not Devin. And if we’re being honest, maybe with how much money he doesn’t have.
Nathan:Money has nothing to do with it.
Cory smirks.
Nathan: Believe what you want. But I know men like Devin. They’re charming. Hungry. Always looking for a way into a better life.
Cory: Police work is an honest profession. He’s respected. And Sydney thinks highly of him.
Nathan’s jaw tightens.
Nathan: You’re different. You have roots here. You have a future. You own a successful business. You understand responsibility. That’s the kind of man my daughter needs.
Cory:Nathan...
Nathan: Don’t tell me I’m wrong. Don’t tell me you haven’t imagined a future with her. Marriage.Children. A family. The Inn becoming yours together.
Cory says nothing.
Nathan: That’s what she should have. Not a patrol car and a partner who’s filling her head with nonsense.
Cory: I can’t control Sydney.I can’t make her quit her job.I can’t make her love me.And I can’t make her stop seeing Devin.
Nathan slowly sits back down.
Nathan: No. But you can remind her who has always been there. Who she trusts. Who she knows.History matters, Cory. History always matters.
Cory: I want to be honest with her. I’ve always been honest with her.She knows exactly how I feel.
Nathan shakes his head.
Nathan: That’s why you’re losing.
Cory looks up.
Nathan: Because you’re trying to be the nice guy.Sometimes being the nice guy means standing by while someone else takes what should have been yours.
Cory: So what’s your plan? What exactly do you want me to do?
Nathan stares at him for a long moment.
Nathan: I want you to stop acting like you’ve already lost.Do you want Sydney in your life?
Cory: Of course I do.
Nathan: Then stop giving Devin Garcia room to replace you.
Before Cory can respond, the office door suddenly swings open.Sydney steps inside carrying a folder. She immediately notices the tension. Her eyes move from Nathan to Cory.
Sydney: What’s going on here?
The two men exchange a glance. Neither is prepared for her arrival.
Sydney: (shocked)What aren’t you telling me?
SCENE 5 Balsam Fashions headquarters. The photography studio is alive with activity. Assistants move clothing racks, makeup artists gather supplies, and music pulses through the speakers as a fashion shoot comes to a close. Jenna stands behind the camera, confidently directing the final shots of Andrea. Daniel watches from a distance with pride, while Shawn sits beside him, unable to take his eyes off Andrea.
Jenna: Turn your shoulder a little more... that’s it. Chin up. Perfect. Give me confidence. You’re not wearing the dress, Andrea—the dress is wearing you.
The camera flashes.
Jenna:Beautiful. Hold it. Hold it...
Several more flashes.
Jenna:And that’s a wrap. I think we got it.
The crew begins applauding lightly. Andrea smiles.
Daniel:I have to admit, I’m excited. Jenna, I think you were absolutely right about choosing Andrea.
Jenna:I definitely believe in her. The camera loves her, and more importantly, she knows how to tell a story without saying a word.
Andrea:It’s not a bad thing that my big sister happens to take amazing photos.
Jenna:Don’t let it go to your head.
Daniel: I think Shawn here would agree. Right, Shawn?
Shawn is caught staring at Andrea.
Shawn:(awkwardly) Definitely.
Andrea smiles at him, causing him to blush slightly.
Daniel: Why don’t you help Andrea back to her dressing room?
Andrea:I could use the help with all these bags.
Shawn:Sure.
Shawn quickly gathers several garment bags and follows Andrea out of the studio.
Andrea:(smiling)Such a gentleman.
They exit. Daniel watches them go.
Daniel:Looks like somebody inherited the Lawson charm.
Jenna:Or maybe he’s just completely smitten.
Daniel chuckles before turning back to Jenna.
Jenna: I’ll send you the edited photos tomorrow morning. I just want to clean them up a little first.
Daniel:Flying back to New York tonight?
Jenna: Yes. I’ve got meetings tomorrow afternoon and a shoot in Central Park.
Daniel :I was hoping I could convince you to stay for the party tonight.
Jenna:Daniel...
Daniel: Just the party.
Jenna:I’ve got to get back.
Daniel:It was good seeing you.
Jenna: You too.
A silence settles between them. Neither moves.
Daniel:Okay, stop this.
Jenna:Stop what?
Daniel:This. The awkwardness. Pretending we’re strangers.
Jenna: I told you when I accepted this job it was going to be strictly business. Besides, I did this for Andrea.
Daniel: And she’s going to be in demand after today. I hope you’ll consider shooting her again.
Jenna:If it’s business, yes.
Daniel studies her face.
Daniel: You know I still care about you.
Jenna looks away.
Daniel: The things that happened between us eight years ago mattered to me.
Jenna: What happened was a mistake.
Daniel: Was it?
Jenna: Yes.
She hesitates before continuing.
Jenna: It was the right thing for you to go back to Megan.
Daniel: Was it?
Jenna:Don’t do that.
Daniel:Do what?
Jenna: Make me question decisions I’ve spent eight years trying to live with.
Daniel softens.
Daniel: Stay tonight.
Jenna: I don’t think that’s wise.
Daniel: I can get you a room at the inn. No expectations. No complications.
Jenna stares at him. For a moment neither speaks.
Daniel: Just one night.
Jenna struggles to maintain her composure.
Jenna: It would be nice to spend some more time with Andrea.
Daniel smiles slightly, sensing her resistance weakening.
Daniel:Then stay.
Jenna: I don’t think what happened between us was wise either.
Daniel:Look where wisdom got me.
His expression darkens.
Daniel: Megan and I are finished. She’s run off to find herself, and somewhere along the way I lost myself too.
Jenna :I’m sorry it didn’t work out.
Pause.
Jenna: But Daniel, I’m not going to be leftovers.
Daniel: Jenna—
Jenna: What we had was special. Maybe more special to me than it was to you.
Daniel:That’s not true.
Jenna:You had a wife. Four children. An entire life before me.
Daniel:And yet every day for an entire year I chose to spend my life with you.
Jenna:Because it was convenient.
Daniel:No.
Jenna: Because Megan was gone and I happened to be there.
Daniel: That’s not what happened.
Jenna:Then tell me what happened.
Daniel moves closer.
Daniel:I fell in love with you.
Jenna’s eyes fill with emotion.
Daniel: Megan was off living her life. I was trying to hold mine together. Then you walked into my studio and reminded me what happiness felt like.
Jenna:Daniel...
Daniel:You know I’m telling the truth.
Jenna remains silent.
Daniel:I’m not asking for us to start over. I’m not asking for promises.
Jenna:Then what are you asking for?
Daniel:A chance to spend an evening with someone who once meant everything to me.
Jenna looks away, overwhelmed.
Daniel:Balsam needed you. Andrea needed you.
He pauses.
Daniel:And maybe, in some selfish way, I needed you too.
Jenna’s defenses begin to crack.
Jenna:I think I needed to see you too.
Their eyes meet.
Jenna: The problem is looking at you brings everything back.
Daniel: Maybe that’s because it never really left.
Jenna laughs softly through tears.
Jenna: I have a life in New York.
Daniel: And tomorrow morning our jet can take you right back to it.
Jenna:You’re impossible.
Daniel:I’ve been called worse.
They both smile.
Daniel: Just stay for the party. Two old friends who haven’t seen each other in a long time.
Jenna studies him for a long moment before finally surrendering.
Jenna: Fine.
Daniel smiles, genuinely relieved.
Daniel:Thank you.
Jenna: Don’t make me regret it.
Daniel: I wouldn’t dream of it.
As Jenna walks away, Daniel watches her. For the first time in years, hope flickers across his face.
SCENE 6
The Garcia apartment. The apartment is modest but spotless. A small kitchen and living room share the same space. Everything is neatly organized, right down to the magnets lined perfectly across the refrigerator door. A narrow hallway sits center stage, with three doors leading to two bedrooms and a bathroom.
Devin sits at the kitchen table eating. Grace stands at the sink washing dishes. Perry enters from the bathroom carrying a towel.
Perry: Mom, did you get your test results back from Seth?
Grace: Perry, everything looks fine. Seth said I just need to take things a little easier.
Devin: I didn’t even know you’d gone to see Seth.
Grace: It was just a routine checkup because of what happened last year. Everything is good. I’m back to normal.
Perry: Maybe physically. But that doesn’t mean you should be doing everything yourself. Devin, could you talk to Dad about helping Mom out a little more?
Devin: I haven’t seen Dad much lately. I think his shift at the hospital changed. Besides, you’re at the hospital every day. Why don’t you ask him?
Perry: Fine. I’ll ask him. I just thought maybe I could spread the responsibility around. Apparently my brothers have forgotten what family loyalty means.
Grace: Stop it.
The tension immediately rises.
Grace: I spoke to your father this morning. We’re having dinner tonight before I go over to the Inn. And I don’t need anyone asking him for help. I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself.
Perry: You’re going to take him back again, aren’t you?
Devin: Don’t you think that’s Mom’s business?
Perry: Not after everything he’s put her through.
Devin: Maybe my brother should shut the hell up.
Perry: If it wasn’t for him, she never would have had that breakdown last year. She wouldn’t have spent months in the hospital.
Grace: Both of you stop it!
The room falls silent for a moment.
Devin: Dad is trying, Perry. He’s working again. He hasn’t had a drink in months.
Perry: Months. That’s supposed to impress me? How many times has he quit? How many times has he promised things would be different?
Devin: That’s not fair.
Perry: It’s reality.
Grace: Enough!
Both sons look at her.
Grace: I am an adult. If I want to have dinner with your father, then I’ll have dinner with your father. End of discussion.
Perry: Nothing like enabling.
Devin: This is ridiculous. I’ve got to get to the station.
Perry: It’ll be ridiculous when she’s back in the hospital because he breaks her heart again.
Devin: You’re so damn self-righteous.
Grace: Stop it now.
Devin kisses Grace on the cheek.
DE: I’levin see you later, Mom.
He exits.
A beat. Ian enters through the front door.
Ian: Hey, Ma.
Perry: Perfect timing. They can fight about this with you now.
Ian: What happened?
Perry: Same thing as always. Dad.
Grace: Perry—
Perry: I’m sorry, Mom. I’ll stop by tomorrow morning. (to Ian) Please help her out today.
Grace: I don’t need babysitting.
Ian: I already planned on taking care of some things. I’ll run errands, go to the dump, whatever needs doing.
Perry:Thanks.
Perry exits. Ian waits until the door closes.
Ian: They were fighting again?
Grace: Nothing new. They don’t like that I’m having dinner with your father tonight.
Ian: That’s none of their business. They’ve both moved out. They should let you live your life.
Grace suddenly breaks down.
Grace: I just want things to be better.
A plate slips from her hands and shatters on the floor.
Grace: Damn it!
Ian rushes over and embraces her.
Ian: Mom, hey... it’s okay. Things will work out.
The phone rings. Ian answers.
Ian: Hello?
His face brightens.
Ian: Hey, Ashley.
A pause.
Ian: Yeah, I’ll be there tonight. I’ve just got to take care of a few things here first.
Another pause.
Ian: Sounds good. Yeah, I’ll bring it.
He hangs up.
Grace wipes her eyes.
Grace: I’m going to lie down for a little while. If your father calls, tell him I’ll meet him around six-thirty.
Ian: Sure.
Grace disappears down the hallway.
Ian watches until her bedroom door closes. The warmth immediately leaves his face. Slowly he walks to a kitchen drawer and removes a small key hidden beneath a stack of coupons. He crosses to a locked cabinet. The door opens. Inside sits a nearly full bottle of vodka. Ian removes it and places it carefully inside his backpack. He glances toward the hallway. No movement. He kneels beside the sink and opens the bottom cupboard.Taped underneath is a large manila envelope. Ian pulls it free. His expression remains calm as he opens it. Inside are several rolled joints, bags of cocaine, prescription pills, and cash bundled together with rubber bands. The camera slowly pushes in. Ian examines the contents. A faint smile crosses his face. He places everything into his backpack and zips it shut. The audience now sees a side of Ian no one suspected existed. He looks toward the hallway where his mother sleeps.
IAN: Mom... I’ll be home around eleven.
He turns off the kitchen light and exits.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 7 – Nathan’s Office
Sydney- I asked a question. What is going on here?
Nathan- Sydney, darling, Cory and I were just having a man-to-man conversation.
Sydney- About me?
Nathan- You happened to come up.
Sydney- I feel like I’m being discussed instead of listened to. As I’ve already told you, Father, whatever is happening between Cory and me is between Cory and me.
Nathan- Then perhaps I should leave the two of you alone. I have a few calls to make. (He kisses Sydney on the cheek, then gives Cory a meaningful look.) Don’t be too hard on each other.
(Nathan exits, but remains just outside the office door, listening.)
Sydney- All right. What did he say?
Cory- Mostly that he’s worried about you. He thinks we’re drifting apart.
Sydney- My father worries when the sun rises in the east. What else?
Cory- He thinks the reason you need space has a name.
Sydney- Devin.
Cory- He brought him up more than once.
Sydney- My father doesn’t know anything about Devin.
Cory- Then tell me. Should I be worried?
Sydney- You’re worried about the wrong thing.
Cory- Then help me understand.
Sydney- Cory, this isn’t about another man. It’s about me.
Cory- We’ve spent half our lives together. Suddenly you need space, you don’t return my calls, you work late every night, and now you’re spending time with your partner. What am I supposed to think?
Sydney- That I’m trying to figure out who I am.
Cory- I thought we already knew.
Sydney- That’s exactly the problem.
(Pause.)
Sydney- Ever since high school everyone has written our story for us. Cory and Sydney. The perfect couple. The wedding. The house. The children. The whole future mapped out before either one of us had a chance to ask if it was what we wanted.
Cory- I thought it was what you wanted.
Sydney- So did I.
Cory- And now?
Sydney- Now I need something that’s mine. My work. My choices. My life. I need to know who Sydney Lawson is when she isn’t somebody’s daughter or somebody’s girlfriend.
Cory- And there’s no room for me in that?
Sydney- Not right now.
Cory- Including Devin?
(Sydney hesitates.)
Sydney- Devin and I have gone out a few times.
Cory- I knew it.
Sydney- Stop.
Cory- What else am I supposed to think?
Sydney- Think whatever you want, but listen to me first. We went for coffee. Dinner. We’ve talked. We have things in common.
Cory- Things we don’t?
Sydney- That’s not what I said.
Cory- You didn’t have to.
Sydney- Nothing romantic is happening between us.
Cory- Yet.
Sydney- Cory—
Cory- You can stand here and tell me he’s just a friend, but he’s getting the time that used to belong to me.
Sydney- This isn’t about Devin.
Cory- Then why does his name keep coming up?
Sydney- Because everyone keeps bringing him into it.
(Pause.)
Sydney- I need to do this alone. Without you. Without Devin. Without anyone telling me what I should feel.
(Cory looks away, hurt.)
Cory- Will you still be at my father’s party tonight?
Sydney- Of course.
Cory- After all this?
Sydney- Your father means a lot to me. And I promised you I’d be there.
Cory- That’s something.
Sydney- Cory, this doesn’t mean we’re enemies. It doesn’t mean I don’t care about you.
Cory- It feels like it.
Sydney- We’re still friends.
Cory- I don’t want to be your friend.
(Silence.)
Sydney- I know.
Cory- I want to be the man you call when you’ve had a bad day. I want to be the person you come home to. I’ve spent years building a future around us.
Sydney- And that’s exactly why this is so hard.
Cory- Because you don’t love me anymore?
Sydney- Because I don’t know.
(The words hit Cory hard.)
Cory- That’s worse.
Sydney- Maybe. But it’s the truth.
Cory- So after everything we’ve been through, all I get is “I don’t know.”
Sydney- I’d rather hurt you with the truth than comfort you with a lie.
(Pause.)
Cory- I guess I’ll have to learn how to live with that.
Sydney- I never wanted to hurt you.
Cory- Doesn’t make it hurt any less.
Sydney- Cory, you’re still one of the most important people in my life.
Cory- I wish I was the most important.
Sydney- Maybe someday things will be different.
Cory- Someday.
Sydney- I can’t promise anything else.
Cory- Then I guess I’ll see you tonight.
Sydney- Cory—
Cory- No. If I stay any longer, I’m going to keep trying to change your mind.
(Sydney fights back emotion.)
Sydney- I’m sorry.
Cory- Yeah. Me too.
(Cory exits. Sydney stands alone for a moment. After a beat, Nathan enters.)
Nathan- Cory left already?
Sydney- You saw him leave. You were listening.
Nathan- Sydney—
Sydney- Stay out of it.
Nathan- I’m your father.
Sydney- That’s convenient. For most of my life you were in another country.
Nathan- That’s not fair.
Sydney- Isn’t it?
Nathan- I’ve made mistakes. I know that. But I’m here now.
Sydney- Then be here. Don’t manipulate people. Don’t spy on conversations. Don’t decide what’s best for me.
Nathan- I only want to protect you.
Sydney- From what?
Nathan- From making a mistake.
Sydney- I’m entitled to make my own mistakes.
Nathan- Sydney—
Sydney- No. Listen to me for once. I am not a child. I don’t need you arranging my future.
Nathan- You’re angry.
Sydney- And you’re controlling.
(Pause.)
Sydney- You know what the funny thing is? I inherited some of that from you.
Nathan- What does that mean?
Sydney- It means if you keep pushing, I’ll push back.
(Sydney exits.)
(Nathan watches her go. His expression hardens. He moves to the desk phone.)
Nathan- Yes, this is Nathan Lawson. I have a quick question. Is Detective Devin Garcia on duty today?
(Pause.)
Nathan- Four o’clock?
(Pause.)
Nathan- Excellent. Thank you.
(He slowly hangs up the phone, a plan already forming.)
FADE OUT.
SCENE 8 The Wilcox Inn
The inn is lavishly decorated with plants, fresh flowers, linen tablecloths, and polished wood furnishings. Elegant but welcoming, the Wilcox Inn is known throughout the region for its fine dining, weddings, charitable functions, and entertainment. Staff members move through the dining room making final preparations for a large celebration scheduled for that evening.
(Jill is directing servers, arranging floral centerpieces, and checking place settings. Ariel enters carrying a purse and jacket.)
Jill- Hi Ariel.
Ariel- Hello... Mom, I was wondering if I could borrow the car to pick up my dress from Tara’s shop.
Jill- I didn’t think we were getting the dress. We don’t have the money for that, Ariel.
Ariel- Don’t worry, Mom. I’ve got it figured out. Tara said I can pay her back once I start working more hours.
Jill- That’s exactly what worries me. I wish you wouldn’t ask Tara, Cory, or any other Wilcox for favors.
Ariel- Tara offered. I didn’t ask.
Jill- Maybe not, but every time we turn around one of them is helping us. I don’t want us depending on anybody.
Ariel- Mom, it’s a dress, not a handout.
Jill- It starts with a dress.
Ariel- Tara practically insisted. Justin was with me when I went into the shop. She wouldn’t take no for an answer.
Jill- That’s not the point.
Ariel- Then what is?
Jill- The point is that I should be able to provide things for my daughters without someone else stepping in.
(Ariel softens slightly.)
Ariel- Mom...
Jill- I don’t have time for this right now. The keys are in my office.
Ariel- I won’t get the dress.
Jill- I said I don’t have time for this.
(Ariel studies her mother for a moment, then exits toward the office. Jill watches her leave, troubled. After a moment Cory enters from the kitchen carrying paperwork.)
Cory- Everything is looking great, Jill. The place looks incredible.
Jill- Thank you.
Cory- Are you alright?
Jill- I’m fine. It’s just Ariel.
Cory- Trouble?
Jill- Not really. Just the usual mother-daughter struggle.
Cory- Those are the hardest kind.
Jill- Tara offered her a dress from the boutique. Ariel wants to accept. I should be grateful, but instead I’m embarrassed.
Cory- Why?
Jill- Because your family has already done so much for us.
Cory- Jill—
Jill- No, it’s true. You gave Ariel a job. You’ve helped Ashley. Every time something goes wrong, one of your family members seems to be there to fix it.
Cory- That’s because we care about you.
Jill- Still, there should be a limit.
Cory- Then let me help with something you actually need.
Jill- Cory—
Cory- No arguments. You’ve been putting in ridiculous hours preparing for Father’s celebration tonight. I’ll put a bonus in your next paycheck.
Jill- I can’t accept that.
Cory- Sure you can.
Jill- I really can’t.
Cory- Then think of it as earned. Because it is.
(Jill smiles despite herself.)
Jill- You make it very difficult to argue.
Cory- That’s because you’re usually right.
Jill- Usually?
Cory- Most of the time.
(Both laugh.)
Cory- Besides, you know how much Ariel and Ashley mean to me. I’ve known them since they were little kids. I can still remember crawling around under your desk while you were trying to work.
Jill- And getting into everything.
Cory- That’s what kids are supposed to do.
Jill- You’re a good man, Cory.
Cory- I try.
Jill- Thank you.
Cory- You’re welcome.
Jill- Now enough about my continuing saga with the twins. Tonight is a huge night for your father. Everything is ready. The staff has really outdone themselves.
Cory- You and your staff deserve the credit.
Jill- Maybe. But you’re the one who keeps this place running.
Cory- Barely lately.
Jill- What’s wrong?
Cory- Nothing.
Jill- That’s not true.
Cory- Everything’s fine.
Jill- Cory, I’ve known you for most of your life. I know when you’re upset.
(Pause.)
Jill- If you ever wanted to talk, I’m here.
Cory- I appreciate that.
Jill- I overheard you and Sydney arguing last night while I was cleaning the dining room.
(Cory stiffens.)
Cory- Jill...
Jill- I wasn’t trying to listen.
Cory- I’d rather keep my relationship with Sydney private.
Jill- Of course. You’re right. I’m sorry.
Cory- No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped.
Jill- You’re under a lot of pressure.
Cory- I just had a meeting with Nathan.
Jill- How did that go?
Cory- About as well as you’d expect.
Jill- Meaning?
Cory- He spent half the conversation hinting that Sydney is moving on with Devin.
Jill- Oh.
(Cory notices her reaction.)
Cory- What?
Jill- Nothing.
Cory- Jill.
Jill- Cory...
Cory- Tell me.
(Jill hesitates.)
Jill- I saw them together the other night at the high school art show.
(Pause.)
Cory’s face falls.
Cory- Together?
Jill- They were talking.
Cory- Just talking?
Jill- I don’t know.
(Pause.)
Cory looks away, struggling to remain composed.
Cory- Nathan said I was imagining things.
Jill- Cory—
Cory- Maybe I’m not.
Jill- Listen to me. Sydney loves you.
Cory- Then why does it feel like she’s slipping away?
Jill- Because she’s confused.
Cory- What did I do wrong?
Jill- Nothing.
Cory- There has to be something.
Jill- Relationships aren’t always that simple.
Cory- They used to be.
Jill- People change.
Cory- Maybe that’s the problem.
(Long pause.)
Jill- I shouldn’t have said anything.
Cory- No. You were honest.
Jill- And now I’ve upset you.
Cory- No.
(He forces a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes.)
Cory- You haven’t.
(Pause.)
Cory- I should get back to the house. I’ve got to change before everyone arrives.
Jill- Alright.
(Cory starts toward the door, then stops.)
Cory- Thanks for listening.
Jill- Anytime.
(Cory exits. Jill watches him leave. The smile disappears from her face as concern settles in. She turns back toward the dining room, knowing tonight’s celebration may be far more complicated than anyone expects.)
FADE OUT.
SCENE 9
Andrea’s Dressing Room
(The room is filled with garment bags, makeup cases, and bouquets of flowers that were sent after the photo shoot. The excitement of the day still lingers in the air. Shawn sits on a loveseat, distracted, as he scrolls through his phone. Andrea emerges from the bathroom wearing jeans and a fitted T-shirt, her hair down and makeup softened.)
Andrea- I’m really glad you came today.
Shawn- Of course. You were beautiful.
Andrea- Jenna is amazing with that camera. I’m so glad Daniel convinced her to come from New York.
Shawn- I think she would have come anyway. You’re her sister.
Andrea- Maybe. (Pauses.) Did it seem like there was tension between the two of them?
Shawn- Between Jenna and Daniel?
Andrea- Yeah.
Shawn- I didn’t notice anything.
Andrea- Jenna just didn’t seem like herself today.
Shawn- She’s a busy woman. She flew in, worked all day, and she’s flying back tomorrow. I’d probably be exhausted too.
Andrea- Maybe.
(A brief silence. Andrea studies Shawn. He seems distracted.)
Andrea- Enough about that.
(She approaches him and wraps her arms around his neck.)
Andrea- I’m really excited about tonight.
Shawn- (forcing a smile) It’s going to be fun. Anytime the Wilcox family throws a party at the inn, it’s a night to remember.
Andrea- That’s not what I’m excited about.
Shawn- No?
Andrea- No.
(She leans in closer.)
Andrea- I’m excited because I get to spend the evening with you.
(Shawn looks away for a moment.)
Andrea- Shawn?
Shawn- What?
Andrea- Why are you pulling away from me?
Shawn- I’m not.
(He gently takes her hand and stands.)
Shawn- We’ve got to get to Tara’s and pick up your dress.
Andrea- The dress can wait five minutes.
(She kisses him softly. Shawn kisses her back, but there is a hesitation that Andrea immediately notices.)
Andrea- See? That wasn’t so difficult.
(She kisses him again, trying to deepen the moment.)
Andrea- Why don’t you lock the door?
Shawn- (awkwardly laughing) We can’t do anything here. Half the staff is standing right outside.
Andrea- That’s never stopped people before.
Shawn- Andrea...
Andrea- What?
Shawn- We should go.
(Andrea studies him carefully.)
Andrea- You’re acting strange.
Shawn- I’m fine.
Andrea- No, you’re not.
Shawn- It’s been a long day.
Andrea- Is that all?
(Shawn hesitates.)
Shawn- Yeah. That’s all.
(Andrea isn’t convinced, but she lets it go.)
Andrea- You’re right. We should get going.
(She gives him one last kiss.)
Andrea- Don’t disappear on me tonight.
Shawn- I won’t.
(He kisses her forehead, grabs the car keys, and quickly heads for the door.)
Shawn- Finish getting ready. I’ll bring the car around.
Andrea- Okay.
(Shawn exits.)
(The smile slowly fades from Andrea’s face. She sits down in front of the mirror, staring at her reflection. The excitement she felt moments ago is replaced by uncertainty.)
Andrea- (softly to herself) What’s going on with you?
(The camera slowly moves in for a close-up. Andrea’s reflection fills the mirror as concern grows in her eyes.)
FADE OUT.
SCENE 10 Jill’s office at the Wilcox Inn. The room is busy with banquet schedules, invoices, floral arrangements, and event paperwork spread across the desk. Ariel enters carrying her purse and keys.
Ariel grabs her purse from a chair but accidentally knocks another bag onto the floor. Papers, receipts, and a prescription bottle scatter everywhere.
Ariel – Oh no.
She kneels and begins gathering the items. She picks up the prescription bottle and examines it curiously. At that moment Jill enters.
Jill – What are you doing?
Ariel – I knocked your bag over.
Jill immediately notices the bottle and snatches it from Ariel’s hand.
Ariel – I thought you were done taking those.
Jill – I just take one every now and then. Those trays are heavy, Ariel. Between the banquet tonight and everything else, my back has been acting up.
Ariel – Did you check with Seth or Perry?
Jill – (sharply) I don’t need to check with anybody.
Ariel is taken aback by the sudden tone.
Jill – I just take one when I need it.
Ariel – I’m sorry.
Jill – (softening) I know you are.
Jill places the bottle back into her purse.
Ariel – I was just worried. I care about you, Mom.
Jill – I know.
A moment passes.
Jill – I want you to get the dress at Tara’s, and I want to be responsible for it. I can at least buy my daughter a dress for a party.
Ariel – I don’t want you doing that. I want to be responsible. I’ll be working soon.
Jill – And you’ll probably be too independent to let me help anymore.
Ariel – Never.
They share a smile.
Jill – Okay.
Jill kisses Ariel on the forehead.
Ariel – Goodbye, Mom.
Jill – Drive carefully.
Ariel – And I’ll wear my seatbelt.
They laugh. Ariel exits.
The smile slowly fades from Jill’s face. She looks exhausted.
She removes the pill bottle from her purse and studies it for several seconds.
Jill – Just one...
She opens the bottle, hesitates, then swallows several pills instead.
Moments later Ashley enters unexpectedly.
Ashley – Hey.
Jill quickly closes the bottle and slips it into her purse.
Jill – Ashley.
Ashley – Are you okay?
Jill – I’m fine. Just taking a break. What’s going on?
Ashley – I wanted to let you know I’m studying tonight with Ian and some friends.
Jill – Your sister and I will be here. Make sure you’re home by eleven.
Ashley – I will be. Ian’s dropping me off.
Ashley kisses Jill’s cheek.
Jill – Love you.
Jill reaches into her purse and pulls out some money.
Jill – Get something to eat.
Ashley – I’m good. I still have the twenty you gave me yesterday.
Jill – Then save it.
Ashley – Love you.
Ashley exits.
Jill waits until Ashley is gone. Her hands tremble slightly as she reopens the purse. She removes the bottle again. There are noticeably fewer pills inside than before. Without thinking, she takes several more. The camera slowly pushes in on the nearly empty prescription bottle as Jill stares blankly into space.
FADE OUT.
