Summary

En un mundo devorado por el fuego, Wilgarth es el único capaz de escuchar a los dragones. Pero cuando el más oscuro de ellos despierta, la línea entre hombre y bestia se desvanece. El fuego que escucha.


El fuego siempre había estado ahí.

Susurrando. Esperando.

Incluso antes de que Wilgarth supiera pronunciar su nombre.

Las montañas ardían a lo lejos, y el cielo ennegrecido dejaba caer una lluvia espesa de ceniza. Los dragones habían vuelto, y con ellos, el eco de antiguas guerras que el mundo quiso olvidar.

Wilgarth caminaba entre las ruinas de un valle carbonizado. Tenía veintiséis años, y en su mirada —profunda, de un café encendido— se reflejaban tanto la juventud como el peso de algo más antiguo que él mismo.

Su cabello, rojo como el hierro al rojo vivo, brillaba bajo el resplandor de los incendios, moviéndose con el viento cargado de humo. Llevaba una capa hecha de escamas grises, curtida por el fuego y las batallas, y sostenía en su mano un bastón de obsidiana que contenía una llama viva en su núcleo.

Era el tipo de hombre que no necesitaba hablar para imponer respeto.

Pero cuando lo hacía, su voz sonaba como un trueno contenido, como si cada palabra midiera el filo entre la ironía y la verdad.

—¿Cuántas veces tengo que salvarlos antes de que aprendan a no jugar con fuego? —murmuró, mirando las ruinas humeantes de un poblado—. Supongo que el instinto humano no cambia… ni siquiera cuando arde.

Había en él una mezcla de impulsividad y control que pocos entendían.

Actuaba rápido, pero pensaba aún más rápido. Era valiente hasta la imprudencia, protector hasta el sacrificio. Su humor sarcástico era su forma de no rendirse al dolor, y su paciencia, el escudo con el que domaba criaturas que podían pulverizarlo de un solo soplido.

El fuego en su bastón crepitó, respondiendo a algo.

Wilgarth alzó la vista: sobre la cordillera, un rugido desgarró el silencio. Un dragón descendía, inmenso, con alas que oscurecían la luna. Su cuerpo era un río de sombras y llamas.

—Sabía que eras tú —susurró Wilgarth, sonriendo con un brillo desafiante—. Llegas tarde.

El dragón rugió con furia, el aire se volvió abrasador.

Wilgarth no se movió. El viento le levantó el cabello, su capa ondeó como si quisiera incendiarse.

—Vamos, viejo amigo —dijo con voz baja, serena, casi divertida—. Muerde si puedes.

El bastón estalló en fuego vivo, y en un parpadeo, el cielo entero se tiñó de rojo.

El rugido del dragón se fundió con la risa de Wilgarth, una mezcla entre locura y destino.

Así comenzó la leyenda del último domador.

Un hombre marcado por el fuego, guiado por la soledad, y destinado a entender lo que ningún otro humano había comprendido:

que los dragones no eran bestias… sino espejos.

Y él, Wilgarth, era el único que aún se atrevía a mirar dentro de ellos.
