Chapter 1
They branded us like cattle. Kept us in cages walking and sleeping in our own filth. The weak ones would give up and die but so did the strong ones. Death did not discriminate here.
I had given up long ago but out of spite, my mind would not allow it, I was stubborn. Probably too stubborn for my own good, but it made me a fighter.
The women were split in to groups in the long cages against the walls. It stretched on forever it seemed. There was only a small amount of light that came through a skylight in the ceiling. It was the only thing that told us what time of day it was.
At night it was bitterly cold, we were in nothing but scraps of clothing. If you could even call it that.
The cage floors were covered in straw and a hole in the corner where we could relieve ourselves. Some of the women didn't even use it. The ones that had given up completely, they lay there sobbing after spending all day screaming for help.
Now that there voices were gone, all they could do was cry.
I cried and screamed a lot when I first arrived about a week ago. Atleast thats how many days I had counted through seeing the light. I gave up after two days. No one was coming for us.
I smooshed my face up against the cage bars when the light shone through the skylight in hopes of seeing something. Anything, other than more iron cages and pitiful looking women.
But thats all I could see.
A thud sounded behind me. And then a scream.
I whipped around to see a women on the ground, not moving.
Layla, another girl whom I had become some what friends with in our short time here, knelt down to check her pulse. She stiffened as a wave of realisation cut through the silence. This girl was dead.
More sobs sounded off around us, rebounding off the stone. I was sick and tired of the crying now. Just as I was about to give these crying girls a piece of my mind, a door opened, bright light filtered in quickly and was gone again. Footsteps, getting louder and louder. Keys jingling.
The footsteps stopped outside our cage. Keys jingled again and there was a click, then the door swung open with a groan.
There were three men but only one spoke.
"Move back!" He brandished some type of weapon in his hand and the women squealed, hiding for cover in the corner. I stayed by the bars, trying to take in as much information as possible about these guys and which direction they had come from. I had never seen them before, but then again nobody else in our cage had died.
One man grabbed the dead girl by her ankles, the other by her arms and they made their way out of the cage. Her body swung in the most unnatural way as they hauled her off to god knows where.
There was a jingle of keys, the groan of the door slamming and the click of the lock again as the third man locked our cage. If only we had the strength to rise up against them.
But who knows whats beyond the doors. Most of us, if not all of us, wouldn't make it out of here alive. I was not going to be on that list.
"Hey you! What are we doing here?" my voice was croaky and quiet. I realised as I took a dry swallow that I hadn't talked for a long while and it had been even longer since we had some water.
The guy spun around on his heel, brandishing the weapon at me this time.
"Keep quiet girl or you'll be next!"
His expression was angry, by what I could tell in the dark, their faces were covered with identical black masks covering everything but their eyes.
So much for learning anything about them.
