A different story to tell, what makes this so interesting, is that it’s based on a true story. One that actually happened in my life. I will be using random names I thought would fit, anyways enjoy!
Her name is Mae, and she was in 1st grade where she met, Jehan. Who soon turned to be one of her closest friends, Mae wasn’t really the type to have crushes on anyone, if anything, it was the other way around. When she was in kinder, her teacher joked to her mother that she was a hearthrob because of the guys crushing on her. Anyhow, she thought it’ll be the same old year, little did she know. That she would like one of her closest friends, named Roman.
Roman was in the same seating arrangement group as Mae, but they weren’t that close because Mae was infront while Roman was in the 3rd row, that was until their teacher, Ma’am Clement. And she switched Roman’s seat and now, he was seated next to Mae. That’s where they got close. Mae hadn’t noticed anything off, and she was glad they were getting close. Though, she noticed something, he was getting awfully close to her. Awful? No, not really. She was just, feeling something that was new.
That’s when she got her first crush Roman, a skinny guy with pale and an adorable baby face. And it wasn’t just Mae who realized this, it was also Jehan. Roman was very.. touchy? That’s how she described it, he always layed his head on her shoulder, held her hand. And one time, when they switched classrooms to copy homework from the board, Mae was a fast writer, she always was, so she was at the other classroom to write the questions from 4-5, while Roman was supposed to be at thekr original classroom because he was still writing 1-3. But he didn’t listen, and instead, sat next to me, and Mae already told him to go to his respective room, his response?
“I don’t want to go there, I want to write here.” Roman said.
“Why? Your supposed to write there, the teachers said so.” Mae replied.
“I don’t care, I wanna write here with you.” Roman responded and kept on writing.
Mae smiled at that and let it be. And it was only one of the times she felt butterflies in her stomach. And she only told her best friend, Jehan. That she liked Roman when it was their Christmas party, and she, obviously, having a 1st grade brain, supported it.
A few years passed after COVID hit, and lucky enough for them, they were classmates. The issue? Mae thought she moved on from Roman. And she started liking another guy and they had seperate rooms labeled as class A or B, Roman was at A, while Mae was at B. Mae thought she liked Justin, who was at the same class B as her, but she realized whenever she and Roman would coincidentally see each other when going to pee, he always smiled at her, and when she just tried to wave and give a small smile, her smile would grow bigger.
1st quarter soon ended, and on 2nd quarter, this time, the students we’re all together. Not set A or B, no, like literally together. And yes, that’s when Mae did realize, she liked Roman. Wow, shocker, and it was clear he liked her back too, wasn’t really a secret. Something Mae did realize is that, Roman like physical touch, he kept holding her hand, and whenever he was behind her, he would put his arm on her shoulder. Mae would always have butterlies in her stomach from this. Who wouldn’t?
Something that made her doubt though, was her friends. They weren’t bad, not even terrible, their wasn’t really a bad thing Mar could describe towards them. It was just that, she’s an honor student since kinder, an academic achiever, and Roman? Well, kinda the opposite, Mae didn’t think she was smart, just.. average. Though many people thought Mae of being one of the smart kids in the room, while Roman was barely keeping his honor roll. So when AJ(girl) found out Mae had a crush on Roman, she said.
“Mae, do you like anyone?” AJ asked.
“Um, yes.” Mae responded.
“Really? And you didn’t tell me sooner?!” Aj said. “Who?” She continued.
“Hint, when putting the christmas balls on the Christmas tree, when heading back, we were holding hands.” Mae said.
“You were holding hands with someone?!” AJ said in disbelief.
“Technically, he held my hand.” Mae said.
“Come onn, whoo?” AJ said.
“Roman.” Mae said, suppressing a smile.
“Skelly boy??” AJ said.
“Who’s that?” Mae asked.
“It’s Roman.” Terry said, popping out from behind AJ.
Terry is AJ’s boy best friend, but they like each other but refuse to admit or acknowledge it.
“Hahaha, why Skelly boy?” Mae asked.
“Because, he’s thin, like a skeleton.” AJ said.
(Author’s note: No one was bullied during this time btw, Roman found this funny as well, lol)
“But are you serious though? Roman?” AJ continued.
“Um, yes. Why?” Mae said.
“Mm, nothing, it’s just, you can do better, you know?” AJ said. “Why do you like him? Just asking.” She continued.
“I don’t know either.” Mae said, shrugging it off while AJ just laughed about it.
This would happen, but other than them asking why, and how she could do better. They mostly supported her. After all, they have chemistry.
Things showing they have chemistry is when during a competition, they were sitting on the floor and Roman, who was behind Mae. Gently pulled her down so she could lay on his lap, Mae tried getting up, but Roman just kept her still. And Mae only sat back up when the teacher gently asked her too. Another time is when they were sitting down because some Christmas balls were distributed to hang on the Christmas tree, and yes. This is the same part when Roman and Mae held hands heading back, but anyways, Mae. She’s a hyperactive kid, and Roman is more on the introverted side, so Mae kept moving around the seats and sitting on armchairs while Roman just sat down. And he constantly asked her to come back so they could sit next to each other, as a joke. Mae moved her seat to the middle part of the back row, and Roman fussed, telling her to put it back. And when she refused, he instead, moved it next to her. And yes, they got back to their proper seating arrangements, but it was because of the sun was in their faces.
Plenty of more things happened, like when they got paired for a group project, Mae was looking for a spot to sit, when Roman, who was already sitting down, playfully patted his lap, gesturing for her to sit. They both laughed about it, and yes Mae had a huge smile because of that. And plenty of times during the summer, they would play online games together, which Mae only played so she could play with Roman, specifically.
That’s all I could remember, now, we’re moving on to the next year, when they weren’t classmates.
Mae and Roman weren’t classmates, which wasn’t kinda a big deal, to Mae and her bff, Risha, it was a joke between them that Mae is a “boss girl” who never overthinked or became jealous. Why would Mae ever become jealous? Because, Roman’s friends are mostly girls, if not. Their all girls, and they came up with that joke cause Risha is a hopeless romantic.
Anyhow, Mae planned to move on, but when she was going to pee. She saw Roman, walking toward her with a smile, she tried switching directions, but Roman just followed and they came face to face, it wasn’t anything big. Roman just asked what section Mae is now, she’s section C by the way, and Roman is A. No big deal, Roman left and Mae went to the bathroom, wondering why Roman asked that because she already told him when they were playing online games.
I’ll mention things that caused butterflies in Mae’s stomach, before dropping a.. plot twist?
Anyhow, things that happened is that, they played online games a lot together. And their, Roman had no fear, typing in chat that he liked her. He even made a bracelet with her name on it and she was the first one he made a bracelet for. Sadly, he couldn’t give it because their teacher who made them make bracelets for a club, didn’t give it back in time. And how did Mae know? It wasn’t by Roman, but by his sister. Mae was friends with his older sister, and his 2 younger siblings. Who she sometimes played with online as well. One time, when sneaking out of class, it’s not a big deal really, Mae was with her gay bff, and he pretended to be sick so Mae could take her to the clinic, in reality, they were just going to buy some snacks, anyways. Section A that time was outside, practicing for a group dance, and Roman was their, and before they passed them, she heard
“Hey! Look! That’s Roman’s crush.”
That’s what she heard, and they immediately started teasing Roman as Mae left to get snacks with her friend.
On chat, they were playing truth or dare. And Roman picked dare, so Mae made Roman text his crush that he liked them. So that’s what he did, and he sent it, to her. Also Mae once added Roman’s friend and that friend texted Roman and said
“Broo, look. Your crush added me lol” she texted to Roman.
Plot twist time, that whole time they were at different sections, maybe in the 2nd quarter, Roman actually started liking a guy. He once told Mae that he liked HER more, and not the guy. But yeah, we all know where this is going, lol.
That summer, they didn’t really chat much, and when they found out they were classmates, again. They were playing a game online and Roman said
“Btw, I don’t like you anymore”
Mae, reading that, just replied.
“Lol, same.”
The truth was far from that though. Mae did still like Roman, like, a lot, and in one instance, their friendship or whatever relationship they had, broke. Thankfully they became friends again and Mae was able to move on after 1 year and liking him for 5 years. And during the summer, when Roman greeted Mae for a happy birthday on 5:37 am, she smiled. It wasn’t because, she still liked him. But she was acknowledging the fact that, she finally moved on, and so did he. And before that, yes. Mae did have a hard time, but, who didn’t?
I would like to mention their both red flags lol, Mae during that time when they weren’t classmates kept becoming cold and distant on chat and kept saying she didn’t like him anymore. Which was a complete false so it basically sent him mix signals and when Roman moved on from her while she still wasn’t, she kept relapsing all the time. Regretting what she kept saying and thinking of ways on how it shouldn’t have ended and things she should’ve done differently.
While Roman, was gay. Bisexual? Sure, at the first part. Though it was obvious from the start considering his friends we’re all just girls. Anyhow, soon it was clear he was gay, but he kept saying he was bisexual so they went along with it cause it was more comfortable with him. And during the time with Mae, he was also a red flag. Not just Mae, he would be so like, talkative, chatty the first day, and then the next? Boom. Ghost, nonchalant, left on seen. It happened every week, which was annoying for Mae. Lol
Another thing worth mentioning is that, they weren’t together, at all. They never had any sort of labels or anything. Nothing at all, just 2 people who like each other. That was basically it. And they don’t have bad blood, it was the past,
