Summary

Charlie aprendió a cuidar flores porque su cuerpo nunca fue algo que pudiera controlar. Cada mañana riega su jardín como si el tiempo pudiera detenerse entre pétalos y té caliente. Entonces ella llega, y por primera vez, algo empieza a doler más que la enfermedad: el deseo de quedarse.

Te conocí Girasol

Ocho y media de la mañana.

Aunque el sol ya empezaba a transmitir calor, mi cuerpo aún necesitaba abrigo.

Mis dedos, rígidos, sostenían la manguera;

al respirar, la garganta se me sentía seca, como llena de agujas.

Solo diez minutos…

y para mí eran una eternidad perdida.


Uno, dos, tres; tres pasos a la derecha.

El girasol que planté en mi jardín no hacía más de un mes estaba casi abierto.

Lo observé como si fuera lo único importante en ese momento,

como si la vida quisiera gastarme una mala broma.


Mis ojos se desviaron al sonido de una caja cayendo.


Era ella.


La chica del overol viejo y desgastado, con una sonrisa grande a pesar de cargar una caja casi más grande que la mitad de su cuerpo.

Su cabello castaño oscuro, sedoso y grueso.

Mi mirada se posó tanto tiempo en sus detalles que, inevitablemente, la suya terminó encontrando la mía.


Solo la veía.

Aquellos ojos color miel me tenían cautivado.

Antes de que supiera qué hacer, mi mano se levantó en un saludo simple,

pero que de alguna manera se sentía pesado y ligero a la vez.


Ella cortó el contacto visual; se distrajo tanto que la caja casi cae.

Rió un poco antes de asentir con la cabeza.

Iba a saludar, tal vez a conversar,

antes de que fuera interrumpida por su hermana, que la ayudaba con la mudanza.


La vi alejarse y solté el aire de mis pulmones.

No sabía que había estado conteniendo la respiración,

pero algo en mi interior me llevó a meter la mano en el bolsillo,

como si algo importante estuviera allí.


Di media vuelta y entré en mi casa.

No había terminado de regar las plantas

y, aunque lo sabía, no salí de nuevo en ese momento.


Puse la tetera al fuego casi por costumbre.

El vapor comenzó a subir despacio, empañando la cocina mientras el aroma del té llenaba el aire.

Me sostuve la taza con ambas manos, dejando que el calor calmara el temblor de mis dedos.

Afuera, el girasol seguía esperando.

Yo también.


—El calor del té era capaz de llegar a la carne de mis dedos,

**pero no era suficiente**—.

Llevé mis manos calientes a los labios con cuidado

y soplé, como si el frío pudiera irse con el aliento.
