The Shattering
Darkness swallowed him whole.
Not the soft dark of night, not the gentle dim beneath the Heartwood’s canopy — this was a void without shape, without breath, without time. Caelen didn’t know if he was falling or floating or simply suspended in nothingness. His body felt distant, as if it belonged to someone else. His heartbeat was a faint echo, muffled by the crushing silence.
Elowen?
He reached for her through the bond.
Nothing answered.
The bond — their bond, the impossible thread that had saved him, saved the forest, saved everything — flickered like a dying ember. He felt it sputter, stretch, and then snap back against him with a sharp, electric pain.
He gasped, or thought he did. There was no air here. No wind. No Hollow. No forest.
Only the void.
A whisper slithered through the dark.
“Caelen…”
He spun — or the darkness spun around him — searching for the voice. It was familiar and wrong all at once, like hearing his own thoughts spoken by someone else.
“You fall through memory.”
A shape emerged from the void. Tall. Thin. Faceless. Its edges blurred like smoke. Caelen’s pulse hammered.
“The Rootless,” he whispered.
The figure tilted its head, as if amused.
“You remember me.”
“I don’t want to,” Caelen said, though his voice sounded distant, swallowed by the void.
“You were not meant to.”
The Rootless drifted closer. Caelen tried to move back, but there was no ground beneath him, no air to push against. The void held him in place.
“You carry our spark,” the Rootless murmured. “The third path opened the seal. The Hollow cannot hold us now.”
Caelen’s chest tightened. “I’m not yours.”
A low, rippling sound — laughter, maybe — echoed through the void.
“You will be.”
The darkness surged, swallowing the Rootless, swallowing Caelen, swallowing everything.
And then he felt it — a hand, warm and familiar, reaching for him through the void.
Elowen.
He reached back.
Their fingers brushed.
And the world shattered.
The moment the bond snapped, Elowen screamed.
It wasn’t a sound of fear — it was the sound of something being torn out of her chest. She collapsed to her knees beneath the Heartwood, clutching at her ribs as if she could hold the bond in place by sheer force of will.
“Caelen!” she choked.
The forest convulsed.
The Heartwood’s glow flickered violently, its roots twisting like wounded serpents. The Hollow’s voice — once steady, warm, familiar — fractured into a thousand shards of sound. Pulses of pain rippled through the ground, through the trees, through Elowen’s bones.
Sera shouted her name, but Elowen barely heard her. All she could feel was the absence — the sudden, impossible emptiness where Caelen’s presence had always been.
The bond wasn’t dim.
It wasn’t weak.
It was gone.
“No,” she whispered, shaking her head. “No, no, no—”
A soft voice cut through the chaos.
“You cannot hold what was never yours.”
Elowen looked up.
Ashen stood at the edge of the clearing, her bare feet glowing faintly against the trembling roots. Her eyes — once soft, once childlike — now burned with an ancient, unsettling light.
“What did you do?” Elowen demanded, forcing herself to her feet.
Ashen tilted her head. “I did nothing. You opened the door. He simply walked through.”
Elowen’s heart pounded. “Where is he?”
Ashen blinked slowly. “Where he belongs.”
The Heartwood cracked.
A sound like thunder tore through the forest. Splinters of glowing bark rained down around them. The wind died in an instant, leaving the air heavy and suffocating.
Sera grabbed Elowen’s arm. “We have to move!”
Elowen shook her off. “I’m not leaving him!”
“You can’t help him if you’re dead!”
The ground split beneath their feet. Roots writhed like living things. The Hollow screamed — a raw, agonized sound that made Elowen’s vision blur.
She staggered, gripping the Heartwood’s trunk for support.
Caelen, please…
For a heartbeat — a single, fragile heartbeat — she felt something.
A flicker.
A breath.
A whisper of him.
Then it vanished.
Elowen’s knees buckled. She pressed her forehead to the Heartwood’s bark, tears burning her eyes.
“I’m coming for you,” she whispered. “I don’t care what it takes. I don’t care what wakes. I will find you.”
Behind her, Ashen smiled.
Not kindly.
Not cruelly.
Just knowingly.
As if she had been waiting for this moment all along.
Deep beneath the forest, beneath the roots and the soil and the bones of the world, something stirred.
It had no shape.
No name.
No breath.
It was not alive.
It was not dead.
It was memory — ancient, raw, and hungry.
It remembered the first forest.
The one before the Hollow.
Before Wind.
Before balance.
Before order.
It remembered the Hollowborn — children of the earth’s first magic, wild and unbound. It remembered their power, their hunger, their destruction. It remembered the seal forged to contain them, the prison built from roots and Wind and sacrifice.
It remembered the silence that followed.
For centuries, it slept.
For centuries, it waited.
For centuries, it dreamed of the day the seal would crack.
And now…
Now the third path had opened.
Two hearts sharing one core.
Two lives bound as one.
Two sparks merging into something new.
The seal trembled.
The prison groaned.
The ancient magic pulsed.
“Return…” the Hollowborn whispered.
The word rippled through the roots, through the soil, through the Heartwood. It reached the surface like a breath of cold air. It brushed against Caelen’s falling form. It brushed against Elowen’s breaking heart.
“Return…”
The Hollowborn felt Caelen’s spark — the spark born from the bond, from love, from defiance. A spark that did not belong to the Hollow. A spark that belonged to them.
They reached for him.
They claimed him.
They pulled him deeper.
The forest trembled.
The Heartwood cracked.
The Hollow screamed.
And the Hollowborn woke.
Caelen fell through darkness, reaching for Elowen.
Elowen stood beneath the collapsing Heartwood, reaching for Caelen.
The Hollowborn rose beneath the roots, reaching for them both.
Three voices.
Three destinies.
One shattering.
The forest convulsed, splitting open from crown to core. Light and shadow collided in a violent burst. The wind died. The Hollow’s voice faded. The Heartwood’s glow extinguished.
And in the silence that followed, a single truth echoed through the dying forest:
“The forest has awakened. And it remembers its children.”
