Chapter 1: The Wailing Ghost

The Wailing Ghost

The stench of decay assaults your senses as flittering shadows dance upon the wooden panels of the forsaken manor. Each step you take elicits a mournful groan from the floorboards beneath your feet, as if the house itself is alive and suffering. Cobwebs drape languidly from the ceiling, veiling your path in a fabric of neglect. The moonlight, a pitiful ally, seeps through jagged, broken windows, casting macabre shapes that slither and spasm in the corners of your vision. You feel an oppressive weight bearing down on you, a sinister presence unweighs your soul with every hesitant step.

Dread coils around your heart as you advance deeper into the sepulchral gloom. Frames, once adorned with familial portraits, now host vacant spaces tinged with a foreboding aura. The air is thick, oppressive as if the spirits trapped within these walls conspire to choke you with their lingering despair. You hear a distant wail, mournful and heart-wrenching, rising and falling like the lament of a restless soul denied peace.

As you press forward, the wail grows louder, more insistent, tugging at your very spirit. You are drawn toward the source as though guided by an unseen hand. The corridor seems to stretch unnaturally, elongating to ridiculous proportions, with doors multiplying like malignant growths on either side. Each door is painted with a different hue of dereliction, some draped in mold, others bedecked in grime or overtaken by creeping ivy that seems to pulse with a life of its own.

A sudden chill washes over you, the sensation of spectral fingers trailing down your spine. A fleeting reflection in a cracked mirror reveals an apparition—a woman draped in the tattered remnants of a bygone era, her eyes pools of sorrow and rage. She beckons you with an ethereal finger, her voice a whisper of torment. “Help me,” she pleads, echoing through your mind, her visage distorting as if the very air around her is writhing in agony.

The manor begins to respond to her call, the walls themselves whispering ancient incantations. An ancient clock, lifeless for decades, suddenly begins to tick, each swing of its pendulum resonating with your heartbeat. The air, thick with dread, makes it arduous to discern what is real and what is specter-born. Her visage flickers like a dying flame, casting an unsettling pallor over your surroundings.

You hesitate, knowing that to follow her might uncover the house’s twisted secrets or lead to your doom. The path diverges here, each step promising a new revelation or an inevitable peril. Your heart hammers a frantic cadence as you reckon with the choice before you. The manor simmers with silent anticipation, as if the walls themselves hold their breath, awaiting your decision.
