Chapter 1 BLOOD BENEATH THE CROSS
“Bianca! Bianca! Come quickly! Do you want to be late for school? Your food is ready!” Rachel called from the kitchen.
The house was unusually silent. Her voice echoed through the hallway, swallowed by the emptiness.
“Bianca… can you hear me?” she called again, irritation creeping in. Still, no answer.
Something felt wrong.
Rachel wiped her hands on her apron and hurried down the hallway, her footsteps echoing. Was Bianca still asleep? In the bathroom?
She froze when she reached the bedroom.
Bianca stood near her bed. School uniform perfectly in place. Dark red liquid dripped slowly from the corner of her mouth, glistening in the morning light.
“Bianca… Ruth…” Rachel whispered, her voice trembling. The metallic stench of blood hit her first, sharp and choking. Her mind raced. Just an hour ago, the farmer’s daughter had come to deliver two crates of eggs. Now… this.
A sudden knock at the front door made her jump.
Panic clawed at her chest. She immediately slammed Bianca’s door shut and threw the key across the room, not caring where it landed.
Her heart pounded violently as she opened the front door.
The farmer stood there, polite but tense.
“Good morning, Madam Rachel. I sent my daughter, Ruth, to deliver two crates of eggs this morning, but she hasn’t returned.”
Rachel’s throat tightened.
“You… you sent your daughter?” she asked, forcing a laugh. “I didn’t see her. In fact, I have enough eggs in my house.”
The farmer’s face fell. “She left home over an hour ago.”
Rachel felt the blood drain from her face.
“I… I don’t know anything about that,” she stammered.
“Where could she be?” he asked, concern heavy in his voice.
“I’m not sure,” Rachel whispered, avoiding his eyes.
The farmer nodded slowly and turned to leave.
Rachel slammed the door and leaned against it, hands shaking. Her mind spun.
She had always known.
There was something wrong with Bianca. From the day she found her… the glowing eyes in the dark, the strange language whispered in her sleep, the way dogs howled whenever she walked past.
And now…
A soft sound came from Bianca’s room.
Not a cry. Not a voice.
A low… growl.
Rachel’s eyes widened. She turned toward the hallway.
The door to Bianca’s room was slightly open. But she had shut it.
From inside came a voice. Not Bianca’s. Something older. Something darker.
“Mother…”
Rachel stopped breathing.
Because Bianca had never once called her that.
And yet… the voice was in the room with her.
