Summary

Prólogo.


En la teoría del arte, se nos enseña que el negro no es un color, sino la ausencia total de luz. Pero, científicamente hablando, el negro absoluto es casi imposible de alcanzar en la naturaleza; y es que siempre hay una traza de pigmento, o un resto de algo que alguna vez tuvo brillo.

Mi vida se regía por la ley de la reflectancia. Algo que creí entender a la perfeción. Creía entender como funcionaba la luz: cómo incidia sobre objetos, cómo definía los volúmenes y cómo el color podía manipular la percepción de quien miraba. Me sentía segura en mi mundo, rodeada de pinceles y teorías que explicaban la maravilla en trazos predecibles.

Para mí, la oscuridad era simplemente una herramienta técnica para dar profundidad a un lienzo. Pero la Umbra no es una técnica. La Umbra es la parte más interna y oscura que puedes encontrar en una sombra, el lugar donde la fuente de luz está completamente bloqueada por un cuerpo opaco. Y nunca nos advierten que las sombras más densas no están en los cuadros que consideramos espectaculares, sino en las personas que caminan a nuestro lado.

Hay seres que simplemente no reflejan la luz; la absorben. La consumen hasta dejarte en un vacio desolador, obligándote a aprender un nuevo lenguaje basado en el tacto, el miedo y el instinto de supervivencia. Y no supe que estaba entrando en el eclipse infinito, que dictaría el ritmo de los latidos de mi corazón. Que aquella tinta se quedaria impregnada en mis entrañas, como una cicatriz que por más que cierra, jamás deja de doler y quemar.

Dicen que el ojo humano tarda aproximadamente veinte minutos en adaptarse a la oscuridad total, pero yo no tuve ese tiempo. Mi adaptación fue violenta, un choque químico que transformó mi paleta de colores en una escala de grises y plomo. Entonces, entendí que para pintar la verdad, primero hay que aprender a ver en la penumbra. Y que, a veces, el monstruo que te arrastra hacia el abismo es el único que te enseña a no tenerle miedo a la caída.
