Summary

Capítulo I — El origen

Qué irónica es la vida, ¿no?

Hay días en que todo parece estar en su sitio. No perfectos, sino simplemente normales, con esa normalidad silenciosa que uno no aprecia hasta que desaparece. Y entonces llega algo —sin avisar, sin pedir permiso— que lo derrumba todo de golpe. Pero antes de hablar de ese momento, tengo que hablar del mundo que existía antes de él. Porque para entender lo que se pierde, hay que entender primero lo que se tenía.

Nací hace quince años en una ciudad del interior de Sudamérica. Una ciudad que nunca será famosa en ningún mapa turístico, pero que para mí lo era todo. Llegué al mundo en una familia de economía modesta: no éramos ricos, no conocíamos los lujos que otros presumen, y cargábamos con deudas que los adultos murmuraban entre sí. Sin embargo, nunca faltó lo esencial. Nunca faltó comida en la mesa. Y, sobre todo, nunca faltó amor. Eso, con el tiempo, aprendes que vale más que cualquier otra cosa.

Desde que tengo memoria, siempre fui una persona de dos caras —y no lo digo en el mal sentido. Con desconocidos, me cerraba. Me volvía pequeño, invisible, como si prefiriera observar el mundo antes de dejarle saber que existía. Pero con mis amigos, con las personas en las que confiaba de verdad, era completamente distinto: hablaba, reía, me soltaba. Era yo.

Hay quienes llaman a esto introversión, y puede que tengan razón. Pero prefiero pensar que es algo más sencillo: que me tomo mi tiempo antes de abrir una puerta. Que no me entrego a cualquiera. Y eso, aunque no lo parezca, no me hace inferior a nadie, ni superior tampoco. Solo diferente. Como todos somos diferentes, aunque muchos prefieran no reconocerlo.

Crecí en el mismo barrio, con los mismos amigos, en la misma escuela, hasta los doce años. Para muchos eso puede sonar aburrido. Para mí fue un ancla. Una certeza. Hay una tranquilidad enorme en saber que mañana estará la misma gente que estuvo ayer.

A veces pienso que la infancia es el único momento de la vida en que el tiempo no tiene prisa. Todo lo demás llega después: las dudas, las mudanzas, las despedidas. Pero al principio, solo existe el presente. Y el presente, entonces, era suficiente.
