Chapter 1

A True Incident - As told by Sandeep Chugh

It happened around 1999-2000.

I used to work in a factory. The factory was about 6–7 km away from my home, andcardboards were printed there.

Sometimes there were night shifts, so I too had to stay at night, because I was like asupervisor.

That means the whole factory was mine at night.

We used to work till 2 a.m. and then sleep. One night, I had to stay for the night shift.

There were 3-4 very old workers there.

The factory was, as per those times, located in a remote area, like a dense forest.Right in front of the factory was an iron gate, which had a small door for people to passthrough.

About 100 feet away, in the open yard, there was a huge Peepal tree-which stillexists but now the area is populated.

Back then, everything was deserted. I too was young, around 19-20 years old.

During a casual conversation with the workers, we had an argument that I would situnder that tree at 2 a.m. for 30 minutes,

and

if I ran away before time, I'd lose otherwise, I would earn praise.Maybe a small shirt was also at stake, which I don't remember now. That's what happened.

So, exactly at 2 a.m., I went and sat under the tree.

The workers shut the door. But I felt like maybe they were watching me from the smallwindow in the large iron gate.

I sat there for 25 minutes without any tension. But suddenly, I saw a dog coming toward

me.

I've never been afraid of dogs.

I'm not scared of them because I had often walked alone at night -I got used to thefact that dogs bark. Let them bark, what's the big deal?

So yes, Il saw a dog coming toward me. I didn't care.

But... just then, I started hearing a "gharr-gharr" sound from behind.

Now I turned around.

Sweat broke out on my forehead because the second dog didn't look like a dog - itlooked like a wolf, as if it was about to attack me.

But what's this!

Just then I saw 20-30 more dogs coming toward me, growling slowly.

I felt like I was about to die.

In those days, we used watches with numbers. There were still 2 minutes left.

I looked in front, then to the sides- and I was shocked.Where had so many dogs come from?

All of them were growling and slowly moving toward me.

My breathing became louder.

I couldn't understand anything.

By now, I was completely drenched in sweat.round me,What is this -I started trembling.

I was sitting alone in the open yard under the tree and all athere were only dogs -like big wolves.

They were growling and coming toward me.

Dogs everywhere- thousands of dogs.

Neenee73: The author managed to weave instant tension and mystery from the get go. It was a balancing act that kept me guessing and made everyone look like they could be a villain which is on par with the great writers of mystery like Agatha and Doyle. I was jumping at every creak.
