CHAPTER I: Descent into Darkness

My journey began the moment I fell backward into the abyss. Watching the last sliver of light recede above me, the echoes of their mocking voices and cackling laughter still rang in my ears. In that moment, I cursed myself for being kind and naive—the same girl they had found as an orphan, begging in the streets.

I was the weakest in the clan. Master Morgas had taken me in, but he was no savior; he sheltered me only to exploit me for dark designs I was too innocent to grasp.

Blood mingled with shadows as I plummeted into the black void. The last streak of light vanished along with my hope. "Why?"—the question throbbed in my temples. "I was humble. I was loyal. Why did they betray me?"

The impact against tree branches brought a primal surge of pain. Each limb tore at my battered body until I finally slammed into the thick mire. My face sank into a cold, foul pool. Lying there, half-submerged, I felt a strange peace. “Perhaps it’s for the best,” I thought, feeling life slip through my fingers. “I will die here, unwanted. Forgotten.”

But deep within, a memory of childhood flickered. Despite the cruelty, there had been moments of light. If I could only have one more chance... I would never be so naive again.

My eyes closed. I did not know that the pool I lay in was saturated with lethal toxins. As I drifted in the sleep of death, the poisons seeped through my open wounds. To any other human, this would have been instant death. But my body, instead of surrendering, began to assimilate them. The venom became a part of me, and the pain transformed into a single purpose: survival.

The darkness was not empty. It breathed.

I forced my eyes open, but the light did not return. The world was thick and alien. Every muscle screamed, yet my heart beat—slowly, heavily, as if pumping viscous oil instead of blood. I was alive.

Gasping, I crawled out of the mire. The moment my fingers touched the cold cave floor, something moved. The monsters had sensed prey. A dry snap echoed through the cavern, followed by a roar that made my skin crawl.

It was a small but powerful creature, a hairless hybrid of a hyena and a lizard with six legs and gargantuan fangs. It lunged. I saw nothing, only felt sharp teeth sinking into my shoulder. The pain was so intense I nearly lost consciousness. The monster tore at me, savoring an easy kill, but then... it froze.

A strange gurgling sound followed. The toxins in my blood had paralyzed the beast instantly. It didn't get the chance to finish me; my blood worked faster. The monster collapsed, dead.

With trembling hands, I touched my wounds. Gathering what strength I had, I used the basics of healing I knew to staunch the bleeding. I realized then: to survive, I had to become a shadow. I whispered an incantation, and a faint barrier shimmered around me, stifling the scent of fresh blood. I had only one goal: to grow strong and return.

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
