The Thing That Thinks With Me : Echoes of the Broken Core

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Everyone has a Core. It shapes what you can become. Your limits. Your place in the world. Aren Voss has one too. It’s broken. In a world where fragments called Echoes bind to human souls—granting power while slowly eroding the mind—Aren has always been forgettable. Not weak enough to be pitied. Not strong enough to matter. Just… there. Safe. Invisible. Until something starts noticing him. At first, it’s small things. A reflection that doesn’t quite match. A voice he can’t trace. Moments that feel slightly… off. The kind you ignore. The kind you have to ignore. Then one night, it speaks. “You can see it… can’t you?” The voice isn’t coming from the room. It isn’t coming from anywhere. It’s inside him. What’s attached to his Core isn’t normal. It’s older. Incomplete. And it’s been looking for him. It calls itself the Whispering Abyss. It doesn’t just give him power. It thinks with him. Watches through him. Learns from him. And he’s not the only one who’s noticed. There are systems that track anomalies. People who hunt Echoes. Others who worship them. And all of them would do anything to get what’s inside him. Because Aren has one advantage— He can consume other Echoes. Every fragment brings it closer to something whole. Something that shouldn’t exist. The most dangerous thing isn’t power. It’s what thinks with you.

Prologue: The First Whisper

No one noticed when the world changed.

There were no explosions. No warnings. No gods descending from the sky.

Just… silence.

And then—

a man forgot his own name.

---

It started small.

A woman stood at a crosswalk, waiting for the light. When it turned green, she didn’t move. At first, people were just annoyed. Someone brushed past her. Another muttered under their breath.

It wasn’t until someone grabbed her shoulder and shook her that things felt wrong.

She blinked slowly, like she’d just woken up.

Then she asked—

“Who am I?”

---

Across the city, things like that started happening.

A teacher stared at a page and couldn’t understand a single word. A child spoke in a voice that didn’t belong to them. A man stepped into traffic without hesitation, smiling like he saw something no one else could.

At first, people called it stress.

Then illness.

Then madness.

They were wrong.

---

The first recorded case never reached the public.

It was buried. Classified. Forgotten.

But if someone had the clearance—if they dug deep enough—they would find a single line in a sealed report:

«Subject exhibited signs of external cognitive interference.»

No one really understood what that meant.

Except one person.

---

He sat alone in a dim room, lit only by the glow of failing monitors. Static crawled across the screens. Footage glitched in and out—fragmented, incomplete.

But the patterns were there.

A shadow that lagged behind its owner.

A reflection that blinked just a second too late.

A figure standing somewhere it shouldn’t exist.

The man leaned forward, eyes bloodshot, unmoving.

“…It’s started.”

His voice was quiet.

Not afraid.

Certain.

---

Because he had seen it before.

Not in reality.

In dreams.

---

Dreams of something beneath the world.

Not hidden.

Not sealed.

Just… there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Listening.

---

And now—

the boundary was thinning.

The whispers were slipping through.

---

Somewhere else, in a quiet apartment, a boy shifted in his sleep.

Everything about the room was ordinary. A cluttered desk. Curtains half-drawn. The faint glow of a phone screen fading beside the bed. Nothing out of place.

Except—

the air felt heavier than it should.

---

A sound broke the silence.

Soft.

Faint.

Wrong.

Not from outside.

Not from inside the room.

Something deeper than that.

---

A whisper.

Barely there.

Ancient.

---

“…found you…”

---

The boy’s eyes opened.

He didn’t move.

Couldn’t.

His breathing slowed—not from fear, but from something pressing down on him.

Something watching.

---

In the dark, his reflection in the window shifted.

Then—

it smiled.

A second too late.

---

And then it spoke.

---

“Do you hear me?”

---

The world stayed silent.

But something had already woken up.

---

And it wasn’t going back to sleep.

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...
