Chapter I : The Static Entry
The air in the abandoned wing of the city library felt like it hadn’t been breathed in a century. It was thick with the scent of silverfish, slow decay, and the metallic tang of old radiator pipes. Elias, the lead explorer, clicked on his tactical shoulder-lamp. The beam cut through the darkness, illuminating dust motes that danced like tiny ghosts. He pushed aside a false shelf, revealing a hidden alcove. Inside sat a single, leather-bound book. Tucked into the back cover, hidden in a slit in the velvet lining, was a scratched silver CD-ROM. Hand-written in jagged black marker were the words: PROPERTY OF FRANCIS – DO NOT PLAY.
“We’re really doing this?” Jax asked, his voice low and raspy. He adjusted the heavy straps of his tactical vest, checking the pouches where he kept his high-caliber rounds. He looked like a man ready for war, dressed in rugged military fatigues and boots reinforced for rocky terrain.
“The book says this leads to a world that shouldn’t exist,” Leo whispered, his hands trembling as he slid the disc into a portable, battery-powered player. Kael, the team’s medic, stood by with a trauma kit strapped to his thigh, his hand resting on his sidearm.
The player whirred. A screeching sound, like a dial-up modem amplified through a megaphone, tore through the room. Suddenly, the space in front of them began to fold. Light snapped and hissed, creating a swirling vacuum that smelled of ozone and damp earth. Before they could retreat, the pull became irresistible. One by one, they were yanked into the white void.
They hit the ground with a bone-jarring thud. The carpet was gone. Instead, their hands sank into a neon-purple moss that felt like wet velvet. The air was heavy and sweet—rich in oxygen, it made their heads swim and their heart rates spike instantly.
“Welcome to the Lost Jungle of Francis,” a voice boomed from the sky. It wasn’t one voice—it sounded like a thousand digital voices speaking in a chilling harmony. “I am the Developer. This world is my masterpiece. If you want to escape, you must find the seven key shards. They are kept in temples guarded by my Echo-Walkers. If you die here, your voice stays with me forever. Good luck, boys.”
The portal behind them snapped shut. They were stranded in a world where the trees twisted like DNA strands and the sky was a permanent, bruised indigo.
