Lantern Heart started as a question I couldn’t shake: what happens when a storm takes everything away fast enough that you don’t have time to perform?

Riley drives into Hurricane Helena trying to be useful. She ends up in a metal outbuilding on a stranger’s property, six feet above rising floodwater, with no phone signal and nowhere to go until morning. Cole built the shelter himself. He didn’t expect company.

That’s the whole setup. Two people. One lantern. A hurricane that isn’t done yet.

What I love about this one is how quickly the social layer strips away when survival is the only agenda. There’s no small talk when the water is climbing the walls. You either trust someone or you don’t. You either say the real thing or you spend the night pretending the real thing isn’t happening.

Riley and Cole say the real things.

The storm gave me a way to write intimacy that earns itself, physical and emotional both, without any of the usual runway. Helena does the work that would normally take three chapters. By the time the rain stops, these two know each other in a way that most people never manage.

Summary

Riley wasn't supposed to be on that road. Hurricane Helena had other ideas. When the storm catches Riley alone on a flooded back road, she loses her car, loses the road, and very nearly loses herself. What she finds instead is a metal building in the middle of nowhere, a hand-built platform above the rising water, and a stranger named Cole who planned for exactly this kind of night. They're stranded. The water is rising. And there is exactly one set of dry clothes, one lantern, and one shared space between them until morning. Lantern Heart is a steamy forced-proximity romance about two strangers who meet at the worst possible moment and find something neither of them was looking for. Riley is sharp-tongued and still shaking. Cole is steady, warm, and entirely too attractive for a crisis situation. The storm is loud. The platform is small. And the longer Helena rages outside, the harder it gets to remember they're supposed to be strangers. By morning, when the storm finally moves on, everything has changed. Slow burn that earns every degree. Spicy, atmospheric, and quietly devastating in the best way. There’s a version of this story where the hurricane is just a backdrop. That’s not the version I wrote.

When I put Riley and Cole in that little metal building with the water rising and the power gone and nowhere to go, I wasn’t interested in the disaster. I was interested in what happens to people when all the usual exits disappear. When there’s no phone to look at, no polite excuse to leave, no performance of okayness to maintain. Just two strangers and a storm and however many hours it takes for Helena to pass.

They talk. Really talk. And that’s the whole book, honestly -- the particular intimacy that only comes from being trapped somewhere with someone, with nothing left to protect yourself with except the truth.

Close proximity done the way it should be. No contrivances. Just a hurricane and two people who needed to be exactly where they were.
