No Way Out
The story opens with a narrow, deserted road cutting through a dense forest. Tall trees loom on both sides, their branches forming a dark canopy overhead. The only sound is the soft hum of a car engine and the faint rustling of leaves in the night breeze.
âInside the car, a couple drives in silence. The atmosphere feels slightly tense, though neither of them says anything. The deeper they go into the forest, the weaker the network signal becomes⌠and the quieter everything gets.
âSuddenlyâ
Thud.
âThe car jerks slightly and begins to slow down.
ââDid you feel that?â the woman asks, her voice uneasy.
âThe man pulls the car over. âProbably just a stone,â he says, trying to sound calm.
âThey step out.
âThe forest feels different outside the carâheavier⌠almost watching.
âThe man walks around and crouches near the tire. His expression changes instantly.
ââItâs not a stoneâŚâ he mutters.
âThe tire is completely flatâtorn by something sharp. Not just punctured⌠sliced.
âAnd then they notice it.
âA thin, pointed metal spike lying on the road.
âBefore they can process itâ
âWhoosh.
âAnother sharp object shoots past them and lands nearby.
âThey freeze.
ââDid you see that?â she whispers.
âThen another one.
âThis time, closer.
âPanic takes over.
ââRun!â he shouts.
âWithout thinking, they both dash into the forest, branches scratching against them as they push through the darkness. Their footsteps echo loudly against the unnatural silence around them.
âBut in their desperation, they donât see whatâs ahead.
âSuddenly, the woman screams.
âHer leg snaps tightâcaught in a hidden trap beneath the leaves.
âShe falls hard to the ground.
ââHelp me!â she cries, struggling to free herself.
âThe man turns back for a moment. Their eyes meet.
âFor a split second, he hesitates.
âThen fear wins.
ââIâll get help!â he saysâbut his voice betrays him.
âAnd he runs.
âFaster.
âDeeper.
âAlone.
âHe keeps looking back, expecting something to chase him. His breathing becomes uneven, his thoughts racing.
âThenâ
âHe stops.
âAbruptly.
âSomething feels wrong.
âSlowly, he looks down.
âA thin wire stretches across his path, pressed tightly against his waist.
âAlmost invisible in the dark.
âOne more step⌠and it would have been too late.
âHis body freezes.
âHe doesnât dare move.
âHis mind races, trying to find a way out.
âThen a faint sound comes from above.
âA creak.
âHis eyes widen.
âBefore he can reactâ
âSomething heavy drops from the trees.
âEverything goes silent.
âBack where the woman is trapped, the forest feels colder.
âSheâs still trying to free her leg, her hands shaking, her breath breaking into quiet sobs.
ââHelloâŚ? Is anyone there?â she calls out.
âNo answer.
âOnly the sound of something⌠moving.
âSlowly.
âDeliberately.
âFootsteps.
âNot running.
âWalking.
âShe looks toward the darkness between the trees.
âA shadow begins to form.
âSomeoneâor somethingâis coming closer.
âHer voice trembles. âPlease⌠help meâŚâ
âThe figure doesnât respond.
âIt just keeps moving.
âAnd thenâ
âsilence.
âThe forest returns to stillness.
âThe road remains empty.
âThe car sits abandoned.
âAs if no one had ever been there at all.
