Shiftless

It was a normal day just like any other day. I did my usual morning routine. Worked out, showered, ate, then got ready for school. I'm sure my parents were tired of me. I felt bad for them. They had to constantly change my school, move, switch jobs all because of me. It was the worst feeling. I sometimes wish I could be normal. My parents always reassured me it was a blessing. I always saw it more as a curse. Ever since I was a little girl, I've had problems with my shifting. Not because I couldn't shift, but because of how I shifted. Everyone comes from a specific bloodline. Me on the other hand, I wasn't so lucky. Every hybrid only had one form. Crossbreeds had two. If anyone ever saw me become a third, my life would be over. Hell, even cross bred hybrids got better treatment. I had just finished packing up for school when my mom stops me.

Mom: Sweetheart, have a good day at school.

Me: Any day I don't shift is a good day.

Dad: Have you picked your shift yet?

Me: I shouldn't have to pick dad. It's not fair. I shouldn't have to choose between the God knows how many shifts I can do.

Mom: I know sweetheart, but society doesn't work that way.

Me: Why should I have to be ashamed of the way I was born?! Why couldn't I be a wolf like you?! Or a Serpent like dad?!

Mom: But you are sweetie.

Me: You're right I can but along with forty plus other shifts!

Dad: Hey now! Calm down Dia. Everything will be ok. Just try not to shift.

I roll my eyes and pick up my backpack. My father places his hand on my shoulder, but I shrug his hand away.

Me: Thanks, dad, for reminding me that society is a higher priority than my feelings.

Dad: Dia, I d--.

I walk out the door heading to school. When I get there, my friends Tiffany and Jess were waiting for me. They were my best friends. They knew my secret and it didn't affect their view of me.

Tiffany: Hey girl!

Me: Hey.

Jess: Hey, what's wrong?!

Me: Another day of secret parental disappointment.

Tiffany: Poor baby. Well, you're with us now.

Tiffany was a cross bred hybrid. Her mother as a siren and her father was a fox. Both conniving and deceitful creatures. Unfortunately for her that was her charm. She could manipulate people to do what she wanted if they were weak enough to fall for it. Jess on the other hand was a full-blooded bunny hybrid. Her charm was she was sweet. No matter what made her mad she always smiled. Even when she got detention she smiled. We loop arms and head inside. Suddenly, the hallway fell silent as students stepped aside, creating a path. I didn’t have to look up to know who it was. Remy Blair. Winfrey University’s self-proclaimed queen. She was a wolf hybrid and dated Levi a Lion hybrid. It was like time slowed whenever she walked through the halls. Even the flip of her hair looked like it belonged in a movie. She sees me and walks over to me.

Remy: Well, well, well. If it isn't the shiftless freak.

Me: I can shift. I just don't.

Remy: Riiiiiiiight. And I was born yesterday. I don't see how you were allowed to attend.

She steps closer to me and Tiffany and Jess step in front of me.

Jess: Please leave her alone.

Tiffany: Yeah, back off!

Remy starts laughing. I appreciated them trying, but it wouldn’t matter. Wolves were loyal to whatever they chose. Unfortunately for me, Remy had chosen to hate me. As for Levi his charm was intimidation and by him being a pure bred his charm was stronger than Tiffany's. I felt it coming. Like my body was on fire.

Me: I need to go!

I try to run off when Levi pushes Jess and Tiffany out of the way for Remy to get closer to me. She pushes me into the wall. She grabs my chin and makes me look at her.

Remy: Fucking pathetic waste of air. What is your shift?

Me: I don't know!

Remy: What the fuck do you mean you don't know?! Your whatever your parents are!

She slams me into the wall harder.

Remy: What are your parents?!

Levi: Why the fuck is one of your eyes glowing?

Me: What?! No! No! No!

At that moment, Jess runs up and gives Remy a hug since she can't be violent. She smiles at her.

Remy: Put me down you freak!

Levi: Get your h--.

And in that moment, Tiffany had turned into fox and tackled Levi. He turned into a Lion and started chasing her.

Jess: Dia Go!

I take off running. I turn the corner and look for an empty place to hide when I find a classroom filled with old furniture. It was too late. I had turned into a chameleon. Since I wasn't really anything my changes never matched my traits in that form. A vampire would’ve made more sense. Hide in the shadows. Disappear into the darkness. Instead...my instincts chose a chameleon. I wasn’t invisible. I was blending in. I hear the door burst open. I look to see Remy in her wolf form. Her eyes glowed yellow and her silvery-white fur glowed in the dimly lit room.

Remy: Dia, you're fucking dead!

She sniffs the air before letting out a loud snarl. I accidentally gasped. Her ears instantly perked up, and she whipped her head toward the sound. Before I could think, my claws found the wall, and I scurried out of her reach.

Remy: I know you're fucking in here you shiftless freak!

I had no choice but to wait her out. She was on a rampage, using her snout to flip over dust-covered desks and chairs. Finally, she let out one last deafening howl before storming out of the room. I didn’t move. I waited until the sound of her footsteps disappeared before my body finally gave out. I was shaking so hard that I slipped off the wall and hit the floor. The color slowly drained from my skin as the shift finally released me. I wanna go home.
