The Girl Who Stayed Silent
The house was perpetually bustling with seven individuals sharing the same space, there was an incessant clamor footsteps echoing in the hallway, voices drifting from the kitchen, the television humming in the background, and someone calling out names every few minutes.
Yet for Aysha, even amidst the chaos, silence seemed to linger around her.
She was the eldest child.
Being the eldest came with the weight of responsibility before the taste of freedom. Her parents cherished their children deeply, but they were firm. Very firm.
Rules governed every aspect of their lives.
*"Return home early."*
*"Don’t speak too much."*
*"Study diligently."*
*"Avoid this."*
*"Steer clear of that."*
At times, Aysha would find herself sitting quietly by the window, observing children outside who laughed without a care in the world.
"Why does everything seem so serious?" she often pondered.
As time went on, she began to communicate with her parents in a different manner.
"Don’t be overly strict with the children," she would gently advise them. "If kids are constantly afraid, they may grow distant. If you foster a friendly relationship, they’ll listen on their own."
She wasn’t disputing.
She was attempting to instigate change.
Perhaps for herself.
Perhaps for her younger siblings.
School posed its own challenges.
Books and studies never felt like allies to her.
During her SSLC examinations, reality struck hard.
She failed in social science.
The result felt like a heavy stone plummeting into her heart
People moved on swiftly, but she remained stuck.
She recalled staring at that result, engulfed in embarrassment, disappointment, and self-anger.
"Maybe I truly am not good enough."
The thought lingered for days.
Yet something within her refused to accept that conclusion.
She tried again.
And again.
And again.
Gradually, she completed her Second PUC.
Then she ventured into Interior Designing. Then Graphic Designing. Each achievement felt like a flicker of light emerging after a long, dark journey Meanwhile, outside of her studies, Aysha had another dimension.
The joyful side.
The playful side.
If she made even a small amount of money, she wasn’t the kind of person to hoard every rupee. No. She would reach out to her cousins, her sister, her friends.
"Let’s order food tonight!"
Late-night snacks.
Laughter.
Shopping.
Savoring the little things.
For Aysha, joy was never costly. It was about sharing experiences. Eventually, she became a preschool teacher.
She adored children.
Loved teaching.
Loved creating.
Loved making things beautiful.
Yet, even then, something felt confined within her
Ideas.
Thoughts.
Dreams.
Words.
She would find herself in rooms filled with people, thoughts igniting in her mind.
But she remained silent.
“What if I sound foolish?"
"What if I’m mistaken?"
So she smiled. Nodded. Kept quiet. And allowed others to speak. She wasn’t aware yet… But soon, a single sentence was about to transform her life.
