Prologue
I was shaky before Chaos, something within me faintly glowing. Everyone was counting on me but in this very moment, Chaos saw something different within me. He saw fear.
"Emma Sapphire. Guardian of Light, Protector of the land, Princess in shining armor, Supernova, The Flame, The Sapphire Knight. People, all names given by people you saved. Do they know their hero is a coward? Do they know their hero is doing all this work in hopes that their mom will like them? Do they know that truly, you don't even want to be a hero?
I stared, vulnerable. I held my sword up in an attempt to hide who he saw before him. He stepped forward; the ground burned beneath. He snapped and Cedar's vines wrapped tight around me constricting me until I felt my chest was going to collapse in.
You should never have come alone!" Chaos stood before me, "Look what you have done!"
I looked past Chaos. Everything here was destroyed, I remembered this town. Opal and I were the only ones up when we passed over it. It was lively, full of laughter and joy. Chaos killed everyone. I can't do this alone..I need my friends, but they can't come now. What am I supposed to do? If I give up, my actions could spread the word of defeat to everyone. Chaos could kill me like all the other heroes and this time, Chaos would win for good.
I have a job, a destiny.. but then again I'm just Emma. I'm just me.
I felt my heart fading as tears rolled down my face. My determination was tossed and torn to shreds, sword to my neck. Chaos laughed.
This isn't how it's supposed to happen..
This wasn't what we envisioned.
My friends..what will I tell them?
Will I even be able to tell them?
Is this it? Finally. After coming all this way I had lost hope..and my power.
I was nothing short of a failure.
