Summary

Lanell built her bookstore to be quiet. A place where people could disappear for a little while. A place where no one asked too many questions. A place steady enough to raise her child inside after years spent moving from one uncertain life to another. Then Juniper Hale arrives. No author photo. No interviews. No explanation for why the novel seems to understand its readers better than the people around them do. At first, the book spreads slowly — passed between strangers, underlined in coffee shops, carried carefully through the rain like something fragile and alive. But as Juniper Hale begins changing the people who read it, the small bookstore at the center of it all starts changing too. Customers linger longer. People begin arriving already emotional. And Lanell starts realizing the distance between herself and the words she wrote may not be survivable forever. Told through quiet moments, aching observations, and the unforgettable voice of a child learning what “home” truly means, this is a novel about loneliness, survival, art, and the terrifying human desire to be understood. Some books entertain you. Some books recognize you.

Dedication

For the people who stayed.

For every bookstore that felt more like home than home did.
