Chapter 1
📖 CHAPTER 1 — The Condition
It started with something neither of them wanted to hold for too long.
An envelope.
Clean edges. Expensive paper. Delivered without explanation.
Pamela Silva noticed it first sitting on the marble table in her home like it belonged there more than she did.
She didn’t open it immediately.
People in her world learned early that important things never arrived without cost.
---
Marcus Anderson arrived shortly after.
No announcement.
No unnecessary greeting.
Just presence.
Controlled. Calm. Certain.
Like he had already accepted whatever truth was inside that envelope.
---
“You’ve seen it,” Marcus said quietly.
Pamela looked up from the envelope.
“I’ve seen enough to know I don’t like it,” she replied.
---
He nodded once.
No surprise. No reaction.
Just understanding.
---
Pamela finally opened it.
Inside was a single document.
One condition.
One expectation.
One problem they were both suddenly part of.
---
> “To retain full inheritance rights, the beneficiary must demonstrate emotional stability within a publicly verified romantic relationship.”
---
Silence filled the room immediately after.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
The kind that changes everything.
---
Pamela closed the document slowly.
“So they want us to fake a relationship,” she said.
Marcus corrected her softly.
“Not fake. Perform.”
---
That difference sat between them heavily.
Pamela’s expression tightened slightly.
“And you’re okay with that?”
Marcus hesitated for the first time.
Just briefly.
Then—
“I don’t have a choice.”
---
That was the truth neither of them needed explained.
Inheritance wasn’t just money in their world.
It was control. Identity. Expectation.
---
Pamela crossed her arms.
“If I agree, there are rules.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Name them.”
---
“No emotional involvement.”
A pause.
“No exceptions.”
---
Marcus held her gaze.
For a moment, something unreadable passed through his expression.
Then he nodded.
“Agreed.”
---
A silence followed.
Not empty.
Deliberate.
Like something had been set in motion neither of them fully understood yet.
---
Pamela studied him for a moment longer.
“You don’t trust this.”
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“I don’t trust anything I didn’t choose.”
---
That answer lingered longer than expected.
---
Pamela turned slightly away.
“Then we’re clear.”
Marcus nodded once.
“Clear.”
---
Neither of them noticed how easily that word settled between them.
Like a promise already waiting to be broken.
