Chapter 1
Sophia’s POV
I stood outside the small apartment I had called home for the last six years, watching two men carry my couch down the stairs. The landlord had finally changed the locks. My things were on the sidewalk in black trash bags. Rain started to fall, soaking the bags and everything inside them.
I had absolutely nothing left.
My ex-partner, Daniel, had run off with every cent from our small event-planning business. He took the money, the clients, and our savings. He left me with the debts, the loans, and a broken heart. I had trusted him. I had loved him. Now I was standing in the rain with nothing but a suitcase and the clothes on me.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. A message from the school again.
Message: Liam’s tuition is three months overdue. If not paid by Friday, he will be suspended.
My little brother Liam was only sixteen. He was the only reason I was still fighting. I had promised our late parents I would take care of him. But how could I take care of him when I couldn’t even take care of myself?
I wiped the rain from my face and opened the last job application I had sent. Kane Global. Personal assistant position. The salary was high — high enough to pay the debts, save the house, and keep Liam in school. But the interview was in two hours, and I looked like a mess.
I had no choice.
I changed in a coffee shop bathroom, put on my only clean blouse, and tried to look professional but ‘professional’ didn’t want to be disturbed that day at all. I gave up and continued on my way. My hands were shaking as I walked into the towering glass building of Kane Global in Manhattan.
The receptionist looked me up and down intensely as if trying to figure out if I showed up for the interview actually dressed like that.
“Sophia Reed for the assistant position?”
I nodded.
She led me to the 42nd floor. The waiting area was all marble and leather. I sat on the edge of the chair, trying not to look as desperate as I felt.
When my name was called, I walked into the office.
Alexander Kane sat behind a massive desk. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and terrifyingly handsome. His dark suit looked expensive. His eyes were cold and sharp. He looked at me like he could see every broken piece of my life.
“Sit,” he said.
I sat.
He didn’t smile. He didn’t offer coffee. He just looked at my résumé.
“You have no corporate experience,” he said. “Your business failed six months ago. You have massive debt. Your brother’s school fees are overdue. Why should I hire you?”
My face burned with shame. How did he know all that?
I swallowed hard. “Because I am desperate, Mr. Kane. I will work harder than anyone you have ever hired. I will do whatever it takes to keep this job. I have a sixteen-year-old brother who depends on me. I cannot fail him.”
He watched me for a long time. His eyes were unreadable.
Then he said the words that changed everything. “The position is not ordinary. It requires total obedience. Complete discretion. And absolute loyalty. If you accept, your debts will be paid. Your brother’s future will be secured. But you will belong to me.”
My heart stopped.
“Belong to you?” I whispered.
He leaned forward. “Yes. In every way I require.”
The room felt too small. My mind was spinning. This was not a normal job. This was something dangerous. Something I did not fully understand.
But Liam’s face flashed in my mind. The eviction notice. The empty fridge. The rain on my things outside.
I had nothing left to lose.
I looked him in the eye and said the words that sealed my fate. “I accept.”
Alexander Kane smiled for the first time — a cold, satisfied smile. “Good. Your new life starts now.”
He pressed a button on his desk. Two security guards entered.
“Take Miss Reed to the private elevator. She will begin immediately.”
They took my arm and led me away. I did not know it then, but that was the moment I stepped into hell.
The elevator went down instead of up. When the doors opened, I was in a private underground parking garage. A black car was waiting. They put me inside.
I did not see Alexander Kane again that day.
The car drove me to a luxurious penthouse on the Upper East Side. The doorman looked at me like I was already property. Inside, the apartment was beautiful and cold. Expensive furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows. But it felt like a cage. On the table was a thick contract and a note in neat handwriting.
*Read it. Sign it. You have one hour.*
I sat down and started reading. The contract was clear and terrifying.
One year. Total submission. No other relationships. No talking about the arrangement but my debts would be paid in full, Liam’s tuition and the family home would be saved.
But my body, my time, and my obedience belonged to Alexander Kane.
I cried as I read it. I cried for the life I was losing. I cried for the pride I was about to sell.
But when I thought of Liam sleeping on the street or dropping out of school, I picked up the pen.
I signed my name with shaking hands.
The moment I did, the door opened.
Alexander Kane walked in.
He looked at the signed contract, then at me “Welcome to your new life, Sophia.”
He stepped closer, his voice low and commanding. “From this moment, you are mine.”
I felt the first real wave of fear.
I had just sold myself to a man I did not know.
And I had no idea what he would demand from me.
