Quiet Chaos

The room felt strangely empty after her parents left. For several seconds, Sasha stood by the door staring at the spot where they had been moments ago. Her mother's perfume still lingered in the air. Her father's final words echoed in her mind.

"Call us if you need anything." "Even if it's three in the morning," her mother had added. Sasha smiled faintly. Some people would have found their concern annoying. She didn't. If anything, it made leaving harder.

The sound of their footsteps gradually faded down the hallway until there was nothing left but silence. Silence. For the first time all day, she was completely alone. Her gaze drifted around the room. Compared to the galaxy-themed sanctuary she had left behind, this room was painfully ordinary.

White walls, a single bed, a desk, a wardrobe and a bookshelf. Nothing glowed, nothing moved, nothing resembled distant stars or drifting planets. And yet, somehow, she preferred it. The simplicity felt honest. No distractions. No illusions. Just space to think.

Unfortunately, thinking was exactly what she didn't need. Sasha dropped onto the bed and let out a long breath. Almost immediately, her thoughts began racing. What if she hated university? What if she never made friends? What if she spent four years pretending to belong? What if the nightmares followed her here? Her chest tightened.

She rubbed her temples. "Stop!" The word came out louder than intended. The room swallowed it whole. Determined to keep busy, she began unpacking.

One shirt at a time. One book at a time. One drawer at a time. She organized everything with almost obsessive precision. Clothes folded neatly. Books arranged by size. Art supplies lined up perfectly inside the desk drawer. The process helped. Not because she enjoyed it, but because it gave her something to control.

By the time she finished, the room looked less like temporary accommodation and more like a place someone actually lived. Someone like her. The large window beside her desk caught her attention. Walking over, she pushed it open slightly. A cool breeze drifted inside.

Below, students moved through the campus pathways. Some dragged luggage while others laughed with friends. Groups seemed to form naturally, effortlessly. Like everyone already knew what they were doing. Like everyone had received a guidebook explaining exactly how to fit in. Everyone except her.

A familiar feeling settled over her. The same feeling she'd experienced all morning. She belonged here. At least on paper. Good grades, good schools and a supportive and loving family.

Enough money to attend one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Everything about her life suggested she should fit perfectly into this environment. Yet something inside her disagreed. Something always disagreed.

She pulled out her sketchbook. Painting wasn't her greatest passion. But it helped organize the noise in her mind. Dipping her brush into a mixture of dark blue and purple, she began painting without much thought. The colours blended together naturally.

The image developed on its own. Stars, darkness, light breaking through shadows. By the time she stopped, her stomach sank. It looked familiar, too familiar. Almost like something from her dreams. Quickly, she closed the sketchbook. Not today.

She wasn't thinking about that today. Today was supposed to be about beginnings. Not memories. A notification on her phone interrupted her thoughts. Orientation starts in 30 minutes.

Right. University. The reason she was here. After grabbing her student card and notebook, she headed outside. The campus felt even larger than it had earlier. Students moved in every direction. The pathways buzzed with energy.

Sasha followed the signs toward the orientation hall. Inside, hundreds of students filled rows of seats. Conversations bounced across the room. Some students introduced themselves immediately. Others exchanged social media handles before the presentation had even started.

Sasha chose a seat near the middle. Not too visible. Not completely hidden. A safe position. The university dean eventually stepped onto the stage. The room quieted. A welcome speech followed. Then another. Then another. Rules, expectations, academic standards, student resources. Future opportunities. Most of it blended together.

Still, Sasha took notes. Not because she needed them. Because it gave her something to focus on. Around her, students seemed genuinely excited. One girl beside her whispered enthusiastically about joining clubs. Two boys behind her debated future career plans.

Everyone appeared eager to begin. Sasha couldn't decide whether she admired them or envied them. After orientation, students were guided toward introductory sessions for their respective courses. The afternoon passed in a blur of classrooms, presentations, and information sessions.

Names were exchanged. Questions were asked. Schedules were distributed. Everywhere she looked, people were connecting. Forming friendships. Creating memories. Meanwhile, she remained on the edge of everything. Observing. Listening. Existing.

At one point, a lecturer asked everyone to introduce themselves. One by one, the students stood. Some spoke confidently. Others nervously. When her turn arrived, she rose from her seat.

"My name is Sasha."

Her voice sounded smaller than she intended. "I'm looking forward to learning and... that's pretty much it." A few students laughed softly. Not cruelly. Just enough to acknowledge her honesty. She sat down quickly.

Her heart pounded. Why did something so simple feel so difficult The rest of the day passed without incident. No embarrassment. No disasters. No life-changing encounters. Just ordinary moments.

By evening, exhaustion settled into her bones. University hadn't even properly started, yet she already felt drained. The cafeteria was crowded when she arrived. The smell of food drifted through the air. Students filled nearly every table. Some sat in large groups while others in pairs.

Everyone seemed to have found someone. Sasha collected her dinner and searched for an empty seat. Eventually, she found a small table beside the window. Alone. Exactly where she wanted to be. And exactly where she didn't want to be.

The contradiction made her laugh quietly. She wasn't lonely. At least, not entirely. But watching friendships form around her reminded her that she was starting from zero. No familiar faces, no brother, no parents, no childhood friends. Just her.

For the first time, the reality of university truly settled in. This wasn't a visit. This wasn't temporary. This was her life now. Outside, the sun slowly disappeared beneath the horizon. The campus lights flickered on one by one.

Students continued laughing, talking and living. For a brief moment, Sasha allowed herself to imagine that maybe she could do the same. Maybe one day she wouldn't feel like an outsider. Maybe one day this place would feel like home. The thought stayed with her as she returned to her hostel.

The hallways were quieter now. Most students had retreated to their rooms. When she finally stepped inside her own room, relief washed over her. The familiar stillness welcomed her back. She changed into comfortable clothes and sat beside the window. Night had transformed the campus.

The buildings glowed beneath scattered lights. The pathways looked like rivers of gold cutting through darkness. Beautiful and peaceful. Nothing like the storm inside her head. Her phone buzzed.

A message from her mother.

"Have you eaten?" A second message arrived immediately.

"Ignore your mother. Have you survived?" Her father.

For the first time all day, Sasha laughed. Yes. I've eaten and yes, I've survived. The reply came almost instantly. Good. We love you. She stared at the screen for a moment. Then smiled.

"Love you too."

Setting the phone aside, she climbed into bed. The room was dark. The ceiling unfamiliar. The silence different from home. Yet something about it felt comforting. Today had been ordinary. And perhaps that was enough. No disasters, no nightmares, no painful memories. Just one small step into a new life.

As sleep slowly pulled her under, Sasha wondered what tomorrow would bring. Outside, Aurelian University slept peacefully beneath the stars. Inside, a thousand unanswered questions waited quietly in the shadows. And though she didn't know it yet, this was only the beginning.

Suddenly, she wasn't in her hostel room anymore. She was somewhere else. Somewhere familiar. Somewhere she never wanted to see again.

Sasha sat curled up in the corner of a dark room. Her knees were pulled tightly against her chest. Her fingers trembled. The air felt heavy, almost impossible to breathe. Everything around her was silent. Too silent. The kind of silence that made her ears ring.

Above her, far beyond the darkness, a single white light shone from the ceiling. Soft, warm and comforting. It was the only thing she could see. The only thing keeping the darkness away. Her eyes remained fixed on it.

She wanted to move toward it. Needed to. But her body refused to obey. The light flickered. Once. Twice. Then something began to spread across it. Red.

At first, it looked like a stain. A small crimson shadow creeping over the white glow. But it continued growing slowly and unnaturally. Like liquid crawling across glass.

Sasha's breathing quickened.

"No..."

The red swallowed more of the light. And more. And more. Until the white glow was barely visible. The room seemed to shudder. The darkness deepened. The red became unbearable to look at.

It wasn't bright. It wasn't beautiful. It felt wrong. Like something that didn't belong in the world. Like an open wound stretching across the sky.

The remaining white light disappeared completely. An eclipse. A blood-red eclipse. The moment it happened, a sharp sound echoed through the darkness. A sound she couldn't recognize, yet somehow feared. The red glow pulsed. Once. Twice.

Then everything began melting together like rivers of lava pouring through the ceiling. The walls twisted. The floor trembled. The darkness seemed alive. And suddenly, she felt as though something was watching her and waiting.

Sasha opened her mouth to scream and bolted upright in bed. Her chest heaved violently. Cold sweat clung to her skin. The room was dark. The hostel room. Her hostel room. Not the dream. Not the darkness. Not the red light. Just reality.

Yet as she stared at the ceiling, trying to calm her racing heart, one thought refused to leave her mind. The dream was changing. And that terrified her more than the dream itself.
