Chapter 1
Chapter one
Ordinary was not a word my friend group related to. We were always the out-of-the-box people in high school, and now most of us, just out of college, were heading up to the Dickens trail in northern Colorado for our annual camping trip. “ How many more miles? “Nick asked, keeping his eyes on the road. I was always the one controlling the GPS because Ezra would always get us lost, and the other two boys preferred to be the drivers of the car. “Just five, we’re almost there, “ he smiled at me. His sly smile that made my heart burst, I looked away and out the window, blushing. Maybe he remembered the last trip under the moonlight, as all our other friends were sleeping. He kissed me softly, holding my waist tight. It had been a year of missed calls since then, and now, was he still into me?
“ Turn here, “ I yelled because he was going too fast. He turned down the dirt road and parked the car a couple of miles ahead.
We all got out of the car and started to layer ourselves with camping bags, coolers, and tents. We hiked four miles up the trail to our annual camping spot. I set up my small tent as the boys set up the big tent for all three of them. We preferred it because the boys slept closer to the bathroom hole, and I slept closer to where there could be bears.
As the sun set, we ate hot dogs together next to the fire. Beckett spent an hour setting up
“Night, guys, “I said, hopping into my tent and changing into leggings and a baggie t-shirt. I pulled my socks back on before lying down. I could hear the boys talking, but I didn’t pay much attenchn i payed more attention to my book until the world went silent, and I fell asleep. I woke up at four to the glow of a flashlight shining in my eyes. “Do you hear that? “Ezra said as screaming filled my ears, “Where is that coming from ?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. “Let’s go find out, “ he said, helping me up
I pulled on my hiking boots and a thin jacket. I followed the boys north into the woods. What did it hurt? I thought Ezra had some stuff in his bag that could help, but there was no cell service, so there was no getting medical care this far out from society. “ Wooow,” Beckett said, stopping in his tracks. There was a large metal wire fence with a no trespassing sign tied to it. “ It’s coming from in there, “ Nick whispered. “ ok lift me over, “I said, getting closer to the fence. They all looked at me like I was nuts. “What? You know I love a good mystery book, and now maybe there’s someone who needs help, I’m not stopping here. “They all nodded and lifted my tall, skinny body over the fence, then helped each other over
We walked what felt like forever on the overgrown grass, till over the hilltop, you could see what looked to be a lab. It was overgrown with weeds, and the glass on a lot of the windows was broken. It seemed like no one had been here in years . “ are you sure you want to go in there “ beckett asked as i slid down the hill in my boots the boys looked terfiyed to what we might finded “ mindy this is ridiculous lets just go back to camp” nick winded i looked at all the boys standing on top of the hill i had just slid down “ im not stopping here so if your going to be scaredy cats can i atleast be the one holding the flash light” the all smirked at me and slid down the hill joning me at the bottom.
The screaming had stopped, and now we were left in pure creepy silence
Ezra handed me a flashlight
I marched towards the door, the mud squishy under my boots, I made it to what looked like the way in. The door was cracked, and there was a faint light coming from inside
We all moved swiftly over to the door as the boys lifted the door off its hinges and laid it on the ground. “ What do you think is inside ?” Ezra whispered, “I have no clue, but were about to find out. “I walked into what looked to be a log hallway covered with doors to rooms long forgotten. There was an office at the front with shattered glass windows. We walked further into the hallways with more doors. “ See, there’s nothing here. Can we go back now?” Beckett whispered
I looked down the new hallway to see a sheet covering another hallway labeled caution
A small dainty whisper came just behind it “ hello” a little girls voice rang through the halls “ ok now im freaking out weve got to get out of here i feel like im about to be the murder in the next murder mystery . “ ezra yelled i walked to the sheet and pulled it off the wall it was taped on a little girl in a hospital gown with dark brown hair stared at me “ im holly “ the little girl sead “ hi…” ok now i was freaking out a little “ are you here to save us from the bad men “ the boys hearts full now came closer “ what bad men ?” beckett asked yelling came from down the hall yelling something about trespassers we all looked at the little girl her face went dark “ follow me they will take you if you get caught “ she warend she grabbed my hand and we followed her down the hallway and into a room the room was very empty with only a crib in the middle “ you must save her too then we can leave and not get caught by the bad men “ she smiled at me with fear in her eyes “ your not serious are you we cant just up and leave with some rando kids “ nick yelled “ i dont think we have a chose “ ezra rebutled looking over to be i was over next to the crib now with a three year old girl rabed in a blanket in my arms her yellow pacifier glowed in the moon light that came from the one window in the room were the glass waset broken “ nick grabe holly were taking them with us “ We hurried through more hallways and out the broken back door. The men’s screaming got louder and louder as we made it up the hill. We breathed a moment from atop the hill. I could see four men in black suits come out of the building, look up at us, and start running towards us. We picked up the kids once more and ran as fast as we could to the fence. The boys helped me over, then the two little girls, and then themselves, before we ran back to the campsite. “We can’t stay here, “I yelled. The boys grabbed their backpacks full of gear before looking at me, “What do we do next? “ they asked
“ we dont have time to pack up camp before they ketch us so grab what you can and we will start hiking to the car we need to get them changes of clothes so we will go to my house i have some of my sisters things from when she was little that they can change into “ the boys nodded and packed there bags with what they could as i rocked the little girl in my arms
We made our way to the car as the yelling seemed to come closer
Out of the dark, a flashlight shone in our darkness
“Hurry,” I yelled as we hiked up the last hill
