Payne and Glory

Summary

Kevin Payne has spent twenty years being thrown through windows so other men could win trophies. Now critics are saying his name and the word "Oscar" in the same sentence. There's just one problem: nobody wants to talk about the movie. Fresh off their nineteen-years-in-the-making reunion, Kevin and punk legend April Maye are the most famous couple on the internet, and every talk show couch in America wants the love story instead of the performance of his career. Good thing April Maye has been eating interviewers alive since she was sixteen. Between the press gauntlet, an awards-season war plan, and a Bloodlaw sequel he ad-libbed into something nobody saw coming, Kevin's life is louder than it's ever been. But the biggest question of the year isn't inside any envelope. It's the one he and April are both quietly carrying — the same question, the same secret, sixteen inches apart — and neither one of them will say it first. The third novel in the Payne series is about glory in all its sizes: gold statues, billion-dollar grosses, viral speeches... and a stone house in Westmount with one good wall. She said ben oui. He remembered.

April Maye had been staying with Kevin Payne in Burbank, California for nearly five months, but she was ready to return home to Montreal, and possibly work on some new music.

She had a lot to talk about.

“So,” April said, “We’re going to Montreal. “The jet is coming to get us Friday.”

“Oh no, you’re going back home?” Kevin said. “Well I totally understand April, and-”

April laughed, and then cut Kevin off.

“No, Kevin,” April said. WE’RE going to Montreal. I’ve been here five months. I had a great time. I have. But, now it’s your turn. And I feel like I am going to have to be as blunt as possible when I say this, but….”

“I’m not going without you. We’ve been apart long enough, la.”

“OHHHHH?” Kevin exclaimed. “So you just gonna TELL me where I’m going, huh????? That’s how we doing it??”

“Yes,” April said.

“Okay!” Kevin said. “I’ll start packing!”

Kevin had just wrapped his scenes on the movie The Black Dragon, and Bloodlaw V was scheduled to start shooting in British Columbia in a few months. This was not a problem for him.

“I’ll get a car carrier to bring your Mustangs, la,” April said. “Or better yet, I’ll buy you another Mustang if you’d like. Not that you need any more, but I know you probably aren’t going to be caught dead in something like a Nissan Micra, so it is the least I can do.”

“Can’t forget the ASS!” Kevin said. “Come to think of it, I haven’t got my hands on the Mustang RTR yet, although that new Dark Horse makes me happy in my pants a lil’ bit, just a LIL’ bit.”

April snorted and laughed.

“I’ll buy both of them for you,la,” She said.

Kevin sat there and said and said nothing, with an ear to ear grin of pure satisfaction on his face.

“I also went ahead and got you some appropriate outerwear for the weather,” April said. “As much as I love you in your numerous red leather jackets, those aren’t going to cut it in Montreal at this time of the year, la.”

“I was coming with you no matter WHAT my answer was, huh?” Kevin said.

“Yes,” April said.

“Cool! I’m fine with that” Kevin said. “I’ve got another question, which may be stupid, but….

“PRETTY PLEASE Can Isis come? I SWEAR I will pay whatever it would cost her in bookings!”

At this point in time Kevin had several sessions with somatic touch therapist Isis Moon, and had fallen in love with it.

“I’m pretty sure that isn’t a problem, la,” April said. “It’s not like I haven’t done it before. She has her own room at my house, even. If she has anything booked I can just send the jet for her after she’s done.”

“OK then!” Kevin said. “Looks like we’re going to Canada.”

Carli Pantoja: Wow, what a love story. Not a new concept at all, but written so well that it definitely hits and stands out from the rest. I loved the glimpses into the past that really lit up the present. Also, did Theo write Jasper’s vows or what? <3
