The New Student

The morning sun streamed through the tall classroom windows, casting golden streaks across the floor. Students chatted lazily before class began. Some compared homework answers while others secretly scrolled through their phones beneath their desks.

Bethany Martins sat neatly in her seat near the middle row. Her notebook was already open, her pens arranged perfectly, everything exactly where it belonged. She liked starting her mornings organized. It made life feel easier somehow—manageable, predictable. And Bethany liked predictable.

A folded piece of paper suddenly landed on her desk.

She looked up to find Mr. Anderson standing beside her. Without saying a word, he pointed toward the note before returning to the front of the classroom.

Curious, Bethany unfolded it.

Stay after class for a moment.

She blinked.

What did he want?

Before she could think about it any longer, Mr. Anderson cleared his throat, and the classroom gradually quieted.

"We have a new student joining us today."

Immediately, several students looked toward the door. A few girls straightened in their seats while someone whispered excitedly to a friend.

The classroom door opened.

And for a moment, nobody spoke.

A tall boy stepped inside.

He wasn't doing anything special. Wasn't smiling. Wasn't trying to get attention. Yet somehow, the entire room noticed him.

Dark hair rested slightly over his forehead, and his expression remained calm and unreadable, almost distant. He glanced around the room once before speaking.

"Hi. I'm Lee Evan. I just transferred here."

His voice was low and steady.

A quiet murmur spread through the classroom.

Mr. Anderson smiled. "Welcome, Evan."

The teacher glanced around before pointing toward an empty desk.

"You can sit beside Bethany."

Every eye in the room immediately shifted toward her.

Bethany resisted the urge to sink into her chair.

The new student nodded and walked down the aisle. When he reached her desk, he placed his bag on the floor and sat down.

No smile.

No greeting.

Nothing.

Bethany offered a friendly smile anyway.

"Hey. I'm Bethany."

Evan glanced at her briefly.

"Yeah... cool."

Then he looked away.

That was it.

Bethany blinked.

Her smile froze for half a second.

Well.

That was awkward.

The lesson began shortly afterward. As the morning passed, Bethany found herself sneaking occasional glances toward her new seatmate. He listened carefully, took notes, and answered questions whenever Mr. Anderson called on him. But outside of that, nothing. He didn't join conversations, didn't laugh at jokes, and didn't react when students joked around. It was as if he'd built invisible walls around himself—walls nobody was allowed to cross.

Even during group discussions, he barely spoke unless absolutely necessary.

The more Bethany observed him, the more curious she became.

Who acted like that on their first day?

By lunchtime, half the girls in class had already decided he was mysterious. The other half thought he was rude. Bethany wasn't sure which one was correct.

When the final bell rang, students immediately began packing their bags. Just as Bethany stood up, Mr. Anderson called her name.

"Bethany."

She turned.

"Yes, sir?"

"Can you stay for a moment?"

Within minutes, the classroom emptied.

Only Bethany, Evan, and Mr. Anderson remained.

The teacher adjusted his glasses before smiling.

"Bethany, I need a favor."

Her shoulders relaxed slightly. A favor sounded much better than trouble.

"What kind of favor?"

Mr. Anderson gestured toward Evan.

"I'd like you to show our new student around campus today."

Bethany blinked.

"Me?"

"You're responsible," he said with a warm smile. "And friendly. I think you'll do a good job helping him settle in."

Bethany glanced toward Evan before looking back at her teacher.

"Sure."

"Excellent."

Mr. Anderson gathered his papers and headed toward the door.

"Have fun."

The door closed behind him, leaving Bethany alone with the most difficult conversation partner she'd ever met.

For a few awkward seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Bethany forced a smile.

"Well..."

She grabbed her bag.

"I guess I'm your tour guide now."

Evan looked at her.

Then slowly stood.

"Okay."

Bethany sighed internally.

This was going to be a very long afternoon.

They left the classroom and headed down the hallway. Bethany pointed toward different buildings as they walked.

"That's the science wing."

Evan nodded.

"Okay."

She pointed toward another building.

"The library's over there."

"Nice."

They continued walking.

"The field is probably everyone's favorite place to hang out."

"Yeah."

Bethany resisted the urge to sigh.

Talking to him felt like having a conversation with a brick wall.

Still, she refused to give up.

She showed him the courtyard, the gymnasium, the arts building, and the cafeteria. By the end of the tour, she'd practically become a one-person tour guide.

Meanwhile, Evan had contributed approximately five words.

Eventually, as they crossed the courtyard, Bethany decided to try one last time.

"Our school Wi-Fi is so slow I think a snail could beat it in a race."

For a moment, she expected another simple nod.

Instead, a small laugh escaped him.

It was brief.

Barely there.

But it existed.

And somehow, that tiny reaction felt like an accomplishment.
