Prologue
It was the silence that bothered Lena most.
When he left the room, his footsteps echoed down the hallway before fading into nothing. Then there was only stillness.
His words lingered long after he was gone. You’re just like everyone else. You think you’re special? You’re not.
He always had a way of twisting her thoughts into something ugly.
Lena’s chest tightened. The familiar dread settled heavily in her stomach. She should have said something. Anything. But every time she tried, the words died in her throat. One look from him was enough to silence her.
It wasn’t just the arguments.
It was the constant pressure that followed them. The way he controlled every corner of her life. The way she had slowly begun to believe him.
I just need to get out. I just need to breathe.
Her gaze drifted across the living room. Once, it had felt like home.
Now it felt like a cage.
The walls seemed closer than they should have been. The air was thick and heavy. A restless ache pulsed behind her eyes, refusing to let go.
A gust of wind slammed against the window.
The glass rattled. She jumped. The room felt colder. For a moment, she stood frozen, staring into the shadows gathered in the corners. Nothing moved. Then she heard it—a whisper.
So faint she almost dismissed it.
Then another. And another. Let go.
Her breath hitched.
You don’t need him. You don’t need to stay.
Her pulse quickened.
No.
This couldn’t be real. She turned toward the door, desperate to escape the suffocating feeling crawling under her skin. But as her feet shifted, the shadows seemed to shift with them. They swirled at the edges of the room, moving as if they were alive, reaching for her.
The whispers became clearer.
He’ll never change. You’ll always be his.
Her heart pounded. She staggered back, her body trembling, but there was no escape. They crawled up the walls, folding in around her—a sudden weight pressed on her chest. The air was impossibly heavy.
She tried to call out, but her voice caught in her throat. That familiar pressure. It was like her own fear was being choked out of her.
And then, a snap.
The lightbulb above her flickered, dimming to a faint glow.
No. No, I can’t–
The shadows flared. Something sharp and cold pierced her skin. The whispers didn’t stop, but they shifted into something darker. Something more demanding.
Do it. Break free. Let it out.
The moment she thought the words, the air grew heavier. She felt something cracking inside of her, like an unseen barrier, breaking. Her vision blurred. Her heart was hammering.
And then–a flash of fire.
The heat radiated from her body. The power felt wild, uncontrollable. It scared her, but at the same time, it felt untamed. This is me. This is my power.
It wasn’t just magic. It was fury. It was the rage she kept hidden from him, from herself. It was everything she was holding back.
But as the light dimmed, she could feel it humming within her. Powerful. Dangerous.
And for the first time in what felt like years, she felt alive.
