CAPÍTULO 1: El Sueño de Ayudar

Mateo, el joven de «aire frío», siempre observaba su ciudad, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, con la esperanza de verla mejorar. Para él, defender su hogar significaba entender a los demás.

Ese día, Rosa llegó desde Manabí con las maletas llenas de ilusiones para la universidad. Mateo la conoció en el terminal junto a su padre, Joaquín. Mientras caminaban hacia su nuevo hogar, Rosa sacó su teléfono para tranquilizar a su familia.

-¿Llegaste?

-Sí, mamá, ya llegué -respondió Rosa con una sonrisa, sintiéndose más segura en su nuevo destino.

En el camino, vieron a la familia de Pancha y Miguel. Su hijo, Juan, no hacía un berrinche común, sino que dictaba con firmeza su pedido:

-¡Cómprame un sorpresi y un chupete! -decía Juan, muy seguro de lo que quería.

Pero la gran sorpresa del día fue la llegada de Darío, un amigo de Mateo que venía desde Turquía. Darío no era el villano de esta historia, sino un hombre de gran corazón, aunque al principio se sentía angustiado y frustrado por la barrera del idioma.

-¿Cómo me van a entender si solo hablo turco? -se preguntaba con preocupación.

Se había inscrito en un curso de español, pero aún le costaba hacerse entender. Sin embargo, Darío tenía un motivo muy especial para estar allí: su sueño era estudiar enfermería, aprender el idioma y así cuidar a los enfermos y servir a la comunidad.

Mateo, al ver su generosidad, decidió apoyarlo.

-Te voy a enseñar la cultura de Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas -le propuso.

Mateo lo presentó con David, un sabio chamán tsáchila. Fascinado por las tradiciones ancestrales, Darío entendió que la medicina, el respeto y la comunicación también nacen del corazón y de la naturaleza.

Al caer la tarde, Mateo miró a su alrededor. Aunque todavía faltaba tiempo para diciembre, la gente ya empezaba a adornar sus casas. Las culturas de Manabí, de Turquía y la de los Tsáchilas se entrelazaban en un mismo lugar. No importaba que hablaran diferente o vinieran de sitios lejanos; el espíritu de unión se sentía en el aire.

-Espero que podamos disfrutar la Navidad también, para bien de todos -pensó Mateo con esperanza.

La ciudad comenzaba a iluminarse y todos sintieron que, cuando hay amistad y ganas de ayudar, el mundo realmente mejora.
