THE HEART SHE CANNOT DIVIDE

All Rights Reserved ©

Summary

Seraphine stood between two brothers and a destiny that refused to bend. Caelum, the steady light she was meant to choose. Rhylen, the shadow she was never meant to survive loving. As prophecy tightened its grip and war crept closer, she was forced to walk the impossible line between duty and desire—never fully belonging to either. But fate was never asking her to choose. It was waiting for the moment it could take the choice away. In the end, love did not fail her. Time did. And when everything shattered, she learned the cruelest truth of all—sometimes the heart doesn’t break because it chooses wrong… but because it never gets to choose at all.

The kingdom woke pretending nothing had happened.

Which was impressive, considering half the court had witnessed ancient magic explode across the Grand Hall less than twelve hours earlier.

Seraphine stood motionless as her maid fastened the final pearl button at the back of her pale blue gown.

Outside her chamber windows, dawn painted silver light across the palace gardens.

Everything looked exactly the same.

The fountains still flowed.

The roses still bloomed.

The palace still stood.

And yet something felt different.

As though the world itself had shifted beneath her feet.

As though she had gone to sleep in one life and woken in another.

The maid stepped back.

“You look beautiful, Your Highness.”

Seraphine smiled automatically.

“Thank you.”

The maid curtsied and departed.

The moment the door closed, the smile disappeared.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Too loud.

Her eyes drifted toward the balcony doors.

Toward the gardens beyond.

Toward the memory she could not stop replaying.

The court.

The crowd.

The gasp that had swept through hundreds of people.

Valkyrie standing beside Nyxar.

Ancient light.

Ancient power.

Ancient recognition.

The White Wolf and the Shadow Beast staring at one another as though the world around them had ceased to exist.

And then—

No.

Seraphine squeezed her eyes shut.

She couldn’t do this.

Not today.

Not now.

The entire kingdom was already talking.

Servants.

Nobles.

Advisors.

Everyone.

Nobody had said anything directly to her.

But she wasn’t blind.

Whispers followed her now.

Questions.

Speculation.

Curiosity.

Fear.

The bond shift.

The impossible magic.

The strange reaction between Valkyrie and Nyxar.

Every person in the palace was discussing it.

Every single one.

While pretending they weren’t.

A knock sounded at the door.

Relief washed through her.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

And suddenly breathing became easier.

Caelum stepped inside.

Tall.

Golden-haired.

Blue-eyed.

Familiar.

Safe.

The tension that had lived beneath her skin since waking loosened instantly.

His gaze found hers.

And softened.

Always softened.

As though seeing her was his favorite part of every day.

“There you are.”

The words were simple.

Yet warmth spread through her chest anyway.

“I’m here.”

A smile touched his mouth.

“Good.”

He crossed the room toward her.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Just certainty.

The kind she desperately needed this morning.

The kind she had always found with him.

When he reached her, his hand immediately found hers.

Like it belonged there.

Like it always would.

His thumb brushed softly across her knuckles.

A small gesture.

A familiar one.

And somehow it nearly broke her.

Because it felt normal.

Because it felt unchanged.

Because it felt like home.

His expression shifted slightly.

Concern.

“You didn’t sleep.”

It wasn’t a question.

Seraphine laughed quietly.

“Was it that obvious?”

“You have shadows under your eyes.”

“You always notice.”

“Of course I do.”

Something tightened painfully in her chest.

Of course he did.

Caelum noticed when she skipped meals.

When she was tired.

When she was cold.

When she was overwhelmed.

He noticed everything that mattered.

The realization made guilt flicker unexpectedly through her.

She shoved it away before she could examine it.

There was nothing to feel guilty about.

Nothing.

She loved him.

She was going to marry him.

Everything else was noise.

Everything else was confusion.

Everything else would pass.

It had to.

Caelum lifted their joined hands.

Pressed a kiss against her knuckles.

Soft.

Affectionate.

Entirely unaware of the way her heart squeezed.

“We should go before the council decides to start without us.”

Seraphine groaned.

“I would almost support that.”

His laugh filled the room.

Gods.

She loved that sound.

Loved it.

She let herself focus on that.

Not ancient magic.

Not bond shifts.

Not silver eyes.

Not impossible questions.

Just Caelum.

Just them.

Just the future she had already chosen.

“I’m marrying him,” she whispered to herself.

Caelum blinked.

“What?”

Heat rushed into her face.

“Nothing.”

A grin appeared.

“I feel like it wasn’t nothing.”

“It was.”

His smile widened.

“You were talking about me.”

“I was not.”

“You absolutely were.”

She rolled her eyes.

And for the first time since yesterday, she laughed.

A real laugh.

Not forced.

Not polite.

Real.

The tension eased from his shoulders immediately.

As though hearing her laugh mattered more than anything else.

As though he’d been worried.

That realization settled somewhere deep inside her heart.

Warm.

Steady.

Reliable.

Caelum squeezed her hand.

“Come on.”

Together they left her chambers.

And immediately stepped into a battlefield disguised as a hallway.

Nobles filled the corridors.

Servants hurried between rooms.

Advisors lingered near doors.

Every single person seemed to be talking.

Conversations died when they saw her.

Then resumed the moment she passed.

Not obvious enough to challenge.

Not subtle enough to miss.

Caelum’s jaw tightened.

His hand tightened around hers.

Not painfully.

Protectively.

The message was clear.

Mine.

Not possessive.

Protective.

As if daring anyone to upset her.

By the time they reached the council chamber, Seraphine’s stomach hurt.

The whispers followed.

The stares followed.

The curiosity followed.

Inside the council room, it wasn’t any better.

Everyone rose as they entered.

Everyone bowed.

Everyone smiled.

Everyone pretended.

Nobody mentioned what had happened.

Nobody asked questions.

Nobody acknowledged the impossible magic that had erupted in front of half the kingdom.

It should have been reassuring.

Instead it felt ridiculous.

An entire room filled with intelligent people dancing around a truth too large to ignore.

The meeting began.

Trade agreements.

Border negotiations.

Harvest reports.

Military updates.

Normal things.

Ordinary things.

Seraphine tried focusing.

Tried listening.

Tried participating.

But every time she spoke she felt eyes on her.

Watching.

Wondering.

Waiting.

The worst part wasn’t the suspicion.

It was the uncertainty.

Because she had questions too.

Questions nobody could answer.

Questions she wasn’t ready to face.

Halfway through the meeting, one advisor finally said it.

Sort of.

“Concerning recent... developments.”

Silence fell instantly.

The entire room froze.

Seraphine’s pulse spiked.

The advisor cleared his throat.

“Certain concerns have been raised.”

Nobody looked directly at her.

Which somehow made it worse.

Caelum spoke before anyone else could.

“What concerns?”

His voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

The advisor swallowed.

“The unusual interaction between the bonded creatures.”

Caelum leaned back slightly.

“And?”

The man visibly reconsidered his life choices.

“It has caused discussion.”

“Discussion happens.”

Another pause.

Another swallow.

Then:

“Of course.”

The topic died immediately.

Completely.

Murdered in broad daylight.

Seraphine stared at Caelum.

He didn’t look at her.

Didn’t acknowledge what he’d done.

But beneath the table his hand found hers again.

Steady.

Certain.

Present.

The rest of the meeting passed without incident.

Afterward, the day became a blur.

Appearances.

Conversations.

Greetings.

Smiles.

Everywhere they went, people watched.

And every single time, Caelum stayed beside her.

At lunch.

At court.

In meetings.

In hallways.

In gardens.

Everywhere.

Whenever someone approached.

Whenever whispers began.

Whenever uncertainty surfaced.

His hand would find hers.

Or his shoulder would brush hers.

Or he’d simply move closer.

A silent reminder.

She wasn’t facing this alone.

Hours passed.

Then evening arrived.

And exhaustion finally settled into her bones.

The kind that came from holding yourself together all day.

The kind that came from pretending you weren’t afraid.

The kind that came from carrying questions too heavy to answer.

The sky was dark by the time she escaped to the balcony outside her chambers.

Cool night air brushed her skin.

Stars glittered overhead.

The kingdom stretched beneath her.

Beautiful.

Peaceful.

Unaware of the storm gathering beneath its surface.

The balcony doors opened quietly behind her.

She didn’t have to turn around.

She already knew.

Caelum stepped beside her.

Neither spoke immediately.

The silence felt comfortable.

Familiar.

His shoulder brushed hers.

A tiny point of contact.

Enough.

After a moment he asked softly:

“Better?”

She exhaled.

“A little.”

His gaze remained fixed on the stars.

“I figured.”

Seraphine swallowed.

For a long moment she simply stood there.

Listening to the night.

Feeling his presence.

Trying to gather courage.

Eventually she found it.

“Can I ask you something?”

His answer came immediately.

“Always.”

The words hit harder than they should have.

Always.

No hesitation.

No conditions.

Always.

She looked at him.

At the man she’d promised her future to.

The man she loved.

The man she intended to marry.

And suddenly her voice felt very small.

“Are you worried?”

Caelum finally turned toward her.

She forced herself to continue.

“About yesterday.”

The question hung between them.

For a moment he simply studied her.

Not the princess.

Not the future queen.

Just her.

His blue eyes softened.

Then softened even more.

As though he finally understood what had been haunting her all day.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

The questions.

The loneliness.

Without a word, he reached for her hand.

Laced their fingers together.

Stepped closer.

Close enough that she could feel his warmth.

Close enough that she could breathe him in.

When he spoke, his voice was quiet.

Certain.

Steady.

Exactly like him.

“Not while I’m beside you.”

The words shattered something inside her.

Not because they solved anything.

They didn’t.

Not because they answered her questions.

They couldn’t.

But because he meant them.

Entirely.

Completely.

Without reservation.

Not while I’m beside you.

As if whatever came next didn’t matter.

As if he’d face it with her.

As if she would never have to carry it alone.

Tears burned suddenly behind her eyes.

Embarrassingly fast.

She looked away before they could fall.

But Caelum saw anyway.

Of course he did.

He always noticed.

His hand tightened around hers.

Not enough to hurt.

Just enough to remind her he was there.

And for one fragile moment—

standing beneath the stars with the man she loved—

Seraphine allowed herself to believe everything would be alright.

That she could marry him.

That she could choose peace.

That love could be simple.

The future stretched before her like a golden road.

Bright.

Certain.

Safe.

And somewhere deep in the darkness beyond the palace walls, fate smiled.

Because it already knew what she didn’t.

The hardest choices were still waiting.
