Summary

nameless predator. A deadly bargain. And a girl playing a lethal game of chicken. When a mysterious stranger corners Lilith, he offers a map of the wretched city of Elixyrl. The price? A boy named Henry. Walking on the thinnest ice of her life, Lilith masks her absolute terror behind a wall of biting sarcasm, desperately searching the stranger’s body language for a single weakness. He gives her nothing but a spear to the throat. Confident he is bluffing, Lilith dares him to drive the blade home. It is a fatal miscalculation. The man charges—and the trap snaps shut.

Chapter 3

"So, I've come here to make a trade." The mysterious man said.

Lilith was panicking. What kind of trade does this man want to make? What does he even want from her? She sure was panicking, but she didn't dare show even the slightest hint of it on her face, keeping her expression completely neutral.

"Care to tell me your name or should I refer to you as mysterious man?," Lilith said, being a little sarcastic. What's life without a little risk? That was what she told herself. Lilith was panicking, but she wouldn't give the mysterious man the satisfaction of seeing it on her face.

"Are you sure you want sarcasm to be your response?" The man's voice was cold and indifferent.

Lilith was walking on the thinnest ice on the planet, but she wasn't going to give in that easily.

"What even is the offer?" A hint of emotion flickered in the man's eyes—amuse?

"So...my offer is, that you give me Henry, and I give you a map of this poor excuse of a city—Elixyrl." He changed his stance a little, as if to start running a marathon.

Lilith was a little offended, he didn't even answer her first question!

"So I'm guessing your name really is mysterious man. It kind of suits you,"

Lilith said, choosing her words a little carefully.

"And as for the offer, no thank you." She flashed him a grin of her own.

People think the eyes are the windows to the soul, but they’re just the distraction. Lilith looked for the tells they didn't know they had—the hitch in a breath, the tension in the neck, the jaw tightening. She knew most of the languages a body could speak, but this man wasn't giving her the reactions she needed to see what he [really] wanted. The mysterious man pointed the spear directly to her throat and Lilith could make out the anger in his eyes.

"Don't you dare play with me, foolish girl. I can and probably will put this spear through you right now, right here." The mysterious man whispered, his voice hoarse

"What if I told you to actually do it?" Lilith was preparing for a strike to her throat. She was mentally starting to get anxious now, hoping it isn't showing on her face.

"And I can't believe you've still haven't given me your name. I guess I'll refer to you as mysterious man then." Lilith said, looking him dead in the eyes, silently daring him to a staring contest. The man looked away. He took a close look at his spear and then...

He charged at her.

Obsidian: I liked the story. It was great in its own way. I'm the type that likes the night clubs, the cities, the dark allies. It might be a little on the light side for me (the other side would be the dark side) but overall, its a good read. Also, a little short, but as a writer who tends to rush things mys...
