Chapter 1 - The Man Who Never Looks Up
The first thing people learn about Kang Taehyun is not his name.
It's a warning.
"Don't interrupt him."
The second thing is even worse.
"He doesn't look at people when they speak."
And somehow... both are true.
At the top floor of Taehyun Industries, the city looks small.
Cars move like scattered lights far below, voices reduced to silence by glass walls and steel.
Inside the CEO office, everything is controlled.
Time.
Breath.
Even silence.
Kang Taehyun sits behind a desk that looks more like a boundary than furniture. Papers are perfectly aligned. A pen rests exactly where it should. Nothing is out of place.
Except him.
He doesn't look up.
Not when executives enter.
Not when contracts worth millions are placed in front of him.
Not even when someone is speaking directly to him.
He just listens... and signs.
That's all people get from him.
You've worked here for three years.
Three years of learning how to walk quietly.
Three years of memorizing his schedule better than your own life.
Three years of standing just outside the edge of his attention.
And in all that time...
he has never once said your name.
Not even once.
To him, you are just "Secretary."
Not a person.
Not someone who stays late to fix mistakes that aren't yours.
Not someone who notices the faint shadows under his eyes when he thinks no one is looking.
Just... a function.
Reliable. Replaceable. Invisible.
At least, that's what you told yourself.
"Bring the final report," he says suddenly.
His voice is calm. Flat. Controlled.
You don't even realize he's speaking to you at first.
Because he still hasn't looked up.
"Yes, sir," you answer automatically, stepping forward.
Your heels click softly against the polished floor. Too loud in a room like this.
You place the file on his desk with careful precision.
For a second, there is only silence again.
Then-
He signs it.
No hesitation. No glance.
Just ink on paper deciding someone's future.
Minutes pass.
You think he's done.
You always think he's done.
But then-
"Stay."
One word.
No name. No explanation.
Your hand freezes mid-air as you reach for your tablet.
"...Sir?"
This time, there is a pause.
Longer than usual.
Long enough that something feels wrong.
Or different.
But still... he doesn't look up.
"Everyone else is leaving," he says. "You stay."
That's it.
Not why.
Not for how long.
Not even what for.
Just stay.
Like it's the most normal thing in the world.
The office slowly empties after that.
Footsteps fade. Elevators chime. Doors close one by one until the building feels too large for the two of you left inside it.
You don't leave.
You never disobey him.
But tonight... something sits strange in your chest.
Because for the first time in three years-
he didn't dismiss you immediately.
He kept you.
It's 11:47 PM when it happens.
You're organizing documents at the edge of his office, assuming he's forgotten you exist again.
Then his voice breaks the silence.
Not louder.
Not softer.
Just... different.
"Why are you still here?"
Your breath catches slightly.
Because now-
he's finally looking at you.
And it's the first time you realize something terrifying.
Kang Taehyun doesn't look at people often.
But when he does...
it feels like being seen for the first time in your life.
