Summary

In every city, there is a time when good people head home and the real stories start. These are not stories about people who fall in love. They are about what happens when people are hungry, bored, lonely and want something after it gets dark. Late Night Stories is about the things that people do when Late Night Stories happen.

The 3 A.M. Shop

The night air smelled of a mix of diesel smoke and hot oil. There was a parotta shop open after midnight. It was for the late-night lorry drivers and the travellers who arrived late in the city. The tin roof of the shop made a creaking sound in the breeze. Lakshmi, the owner’s wife, kept wiping the table after every customer.

Ramesh came to this shop every night. He parked his scooter outside the shop and then sat at the same corner bench. Ramesh was a guy in his mid-thirties. He came with tired eyes after the long working hours on the railway.

Lakshmi was used to Ramesh’s usual order. She was forty-two years old. When Ramesh came first to her shop, she called him “Sir”

After some time, she started smiling at him and called him “Thambi”.

(Thambi - which means like their younger brother)

Her husband was fifty years old. He drinks arrack every night and he sleeps behind the cash counter. He snored softly under a towel.

It was a humid night and the last lorry driver had paid and driven away. The shop became quiet. The whistle of the train was heard from a distance. Lakshmi came with Ramesh’s plate of food. The kothu parotta (chopped parotta) with egg and salna was steaming hot. She stood close to him. Her simple cotton sari stuck to her body. The back of her blouse was damp, with sweat. She looked at Ramesh for a longer time than she normally did.

“You come here hungry,” she said softly, “but not only for food.”

Ramesh looked up at her. His hand stopped before his mouth. She looked at him with shyness. She wiped her hands on the end of her sari. He felt the shop had become small all of a sudden. The smell of the chilli from the food mixed with the smell from her skin. She had lines on her face from working for many years, but her body was still soft in some places, especially around her waist. Though she had two kids, it was through her vaginal delivery.

She did not wait for his answer. She just moved to the shop entrance and hung the shop closed signboard. She pulled the old curtain across the front. Her husband was still in his booze sleep. Lakshmi sat beside Ramesh. Her leg touched his leg.

“Eat Ramesh,” she said very quietly. “I know you are tired too.”

Ramesh ate his food slowly. The kothu was hot and spicy. The salna had a lot of coconut and red chilli in it. Ramesh was not thinking about the food he was eating. Lakshmi looked at him. She saw that his fingers were shaking a little when he took the parotta in his fingers. Lakshmi was always polite. He always ate alone. Lakshmi felt something inside her chest. It had been a long time since her husband touched her like she wanted to. Now, Ramesh kept coming to her place. Lakshmi felt her own body start to feel things.

When he finished, she took the plate from him. Her fingers touched his fingers when she took the plate. They looked at each other.

“Come inside,” she said to him.

He washed his hands and she stood beside him.

“In kitchen no one will see.” She said to him.

He then moved behind her.

The kitchen was small. It had only one light bulb. The big metal pots and pans looked a little shiny, but not too much. The floor was made of concrete. There was a wooden cot in the corner where the kept vegetables and cut. Lakshmi would sometimes lie down when her legs were hurting her. Lakshmi turned to him. Her hands were shaking when she put them on his shirt.

“I should not be doing this,” Lakshmi said quietly.

Ramesh pulled her closer to him. He felt the softness of her breasts against his chest through the sari. He smelled the kitchen smoke on her. He kissed her on the neck. She let out a sigh and turned her head to the side. Her fingers started to open the buttons on his shirt one by one, slowly.

She spoke softly to him, saying that she liked him. Ramesh wanted to tell her that she had noticed him, the way he looked at her every night.

He answered by kissing her. It was pretty rough at first. Their tongues danced in passion. She let out a quiet moan into his mouth. Lakshmi’s hands went down his chest. It had been a long time since she touched a man like this. Her body became heavy and alive at the time. She took his hand and kept it on her blouse. He opened the hooks carefully. Her breasts came out. They were full and brown. Her nipples were already hard for him. He held her breasts in his palm. His thumbs touched her sensitive tips. Lakshmi took a breath and pressed herself closer to him.

Her body moved against him. “Don’t think of my husband, he won’t wake,”

They moved to the cot. It creaked under their weight. Lakshmi pushed Ramesh down. She climbed over him. She pulled the sari above her thighs. She wasn’t wearing pantie. She rubbed herself against the bulge in his pants.

“See how wet I am for you,” she said softly. She sounded surprised at her words.

“I was thinking about this night with you,” she added.

Ramesh leaned forward. His fingers touched the slippery parts of her. He pressed his thumb on her. Lakshmi bit her lip to prevent her moan. Her hips moved on Ramesh’s hand. She unzipped Ramesh’s pants. His penis came out, and it was ready for her. Lakshmi put her fingers around his penis and moved them up and down slowly. She felt it was beating in her hands.

“It is so hard for me,” Lakshmi said quietly. “I want your penis, inside me,” Lakshmi said.

She got up and adjusted his penis on her. She pressed down slowly. The heat of her made Ramesh grunt. Lakshmi started to move her hips, rolling steadily. Her breasts moved gently. Sweat made their bodies slide against each other. The cot creaked with her movements. Another train noise was drowning out their breathing sounds.

Ramesh put his hands around her waist. He moved up to be closer to her. He saw her half closed eyes. She moaned when he was deep inside her. Lakshmi bent down. Her hair fell all around him. She bit his lip a little.

“Do it harder,” Lakshmi said quietly on his lips. “I want to feel it.”

He turned her over onto her back. Her legs went around his waist. He moved in and out of her with strong pushes. Their bodies hitting together made an urgent sound. Lakshmi’s fingernails scratched his back gently. She breathed in bursts.

“Keep going… there,” she said.

She came with a shake, putting her face in his shoulder to quiet her scream.

Ramesh kept moving. He felt her pulse around his penis. This made him get closer to her. He pulled out and spilt on her soft belly. A warm feeling spread across her skin. They lay together, breathing hard. The kitchen bulb flickered once.

After a minute, Lakshmi wiped them both with a clean cloth from the shelf. She adjusted her sari using her pallu to cover the marks on her neck. Ramesh then buttoned his shirt. They didn’t say much at first. Lakshmi brought Ramesh some water in a steel tumbler. He drank it while looking at her.

“You will come again tomorrow?” she asked, looking at the stove over there.

“Yes,” he said. “Same time.”

She gave a smile it was clear she was ready.

“I will keep extra salna ready.” She said.

They went back to the front of the shop. Her husband was still sleeping. Now everything felt different. Ramesh touched her hand one time before he left the shop. She squeezed Ramesh’s hand back. Then she let go of Ramesh’s hand.

The nights that followed were all the same. Ramesh arrived every night. He would eat his egg kothu every time. They would wait until the last customer left. Then Ramesh and Lakshmi go to the kitchen. Sometimes they had to be quick about it. The times they took their own time. Lakshmi found out what Ramesh liked. She would put his in her mouth. Ramesh begged her to keep going. Ramesh also learned what Lakshmi liked. He loved kissing the stretch marks on her hips. He loved the roundness of her stomach, too. One night, Ramesh made Lakshmi come with his tongue. She was holding the edge of the cot at that time. Her legs were shaking hard.

One night it rained hard. The water hit the tin roof loudly. The shop was empty earlier than it usually is. Lakshmi locked the door early. He took Lakshmi against the kitchen wall. Lakshmi’s sari was all bunched up around her waist. His pants were just pulled down a little. The sound of their bodies hitting each other was mixed with the sound of the rain.

“I think about you during the day,” she said, while they were doing it.

“When I am cutting onions when I am serving food to people. I get really turned on thinking about you.”

Ramesh thrust deeper. “I come here only for you now,” he said.

Not every night was perfect. One night, her husband called her. They both stopped.

Lakshmi said quietly, “Go back to sleep I am shutting the shop.”

That moment went away. Another time, Ramesh went home because of his personal work. She waited and was worried. When he did, the next day she held him closer than usual.

Their secret went on for months. Lakshmi kept some eggs for Ramesh. Some nights her hair smelled of jasmine oil. She would sometimes sing Tamil movie songs for him while they were together. Ramesh saw the patches on her hands from the kitchen work, and he kissed them gently. He noticed her tired eyes, and he rubbed her shoulders before they started.

One midnight, after they finished, the city felt really quiet. Lakshmi kept her finger on his chest.

“This thing cannot last forever,” she said softly. “But for now it is enough.”

He did not want to think about the endings. He only wanted to feel the memory of her warmth and the taste of salna on his tongue and the hunger he fulfilled in the parotta shop.
