Summary

OFF THE RECORD The world knew them as the voices behind a beloved podcast. They knew each other as family. Ayira and Zuberi had spent years building dreams together alongside their closest friends. Between late-night recordings, inside jokes, and countless memories, Off the Record became more than a podcast—it became home. But home is fragile. When love goes unspoken, jealousy takes root, and tragedy strikes one devastating blow after another, the bond that once held them together begins to unravel. Years later, haunted by regret and searching for the girl he pushed away, Zuberi is forced to confront a painful truth: Sometimes the person who means the most to you is the one you hurt the most. A heartbreaking slow-burn about friendship, betrayal, loss, and a love story that arrives far too late. 💙📖

Chapter 1 MIC CHECK

"Tell me why Tafari is calling an emergency meeting at seven in the morning."Ayira Ndege shoved open the studio door with an iced coffee in one hand and a half-eaten mandazi in the other."Some of us value professionalism," Tafari Njoroge replied without looking up from his tablet.Ayira snorted."You once attended a sponsor meeting wearing mismatched shoes.""They matched spiritually.""They were red and green.""They found a way." A laugh escaped Tau Mosi from behind the soundboard."Good morning to you too, Ayira.""Morning, Tau."The studio had become their second home over the last year. The walls were covered in soundproof foam. Camera equipment occupied every corner. A giant whiteboard filled with episode ideas stood against the far wall, while the glowing neon sign above the recording area proudly displayed the words:OFF THE RECORDMost people saw a podcast studio.Ayira saw countless sleepless nights, endless brainstorming sessions, rejected sponsorship pitches, recording mistakes, and a dream that had somehow survived every obstacle thrown at it.There had been days when they couldn't afford decent microphones.Days when they had recorded entire episodes only to discover Tau hadn't pressed the right button.Days when only fifty people listened. Now they were pulling thousands of listeners every week.It still felt unreal. Her eyes automatically searched the room.A habit.A familiar one.She found Zuberi Amani exactly where she expected.Feet on the table.Headphones around his neck.Looking entirely too comfortable for someone who contributed very little to the setup process."You're late."He didn't even bother looking up from his phone."Good morning to you too.""It's seven-thirty.""I live by a different clock.""That explains why you're always behind."Tau nearly spit out his drink.Across the room, Nalia Zawadi burst into laughter."Oh, she got you."Zuberi finally looked up.His eyes found Ayira instantly. As they always did."There she is."Ayira rolled her eyes."There who is?""The menace.""The audacity.""The violence.""The reason Tafari has high blood pressure."Tafari pointed at him."She's actually right about that."Everyone laughed. The easy kind of laughter that came from years of friendship. The kind that didn't require effort.Ayira dropped into the empty seat beside Zuberi.Without thinking, she reached for his coffee.Without thinking, he moved it closer.Without thinking, she took a sip.Nobody reacted.Because this was normal. This was Ayira and Zuberi. At some point over the years, they'd stopped asking permission for things. Her fries became his fries. His coffee became her coffee. Her charger belonged to everybody. His hoodies somehow ended up in her apartment and never returned.Nobody questioned it anymore. It was simply how they worked."You're staring."Ayira blinked."What?"Zuberi pointed at the cup in her hand."You've been holding my coffee hostage."She looked down."Oh.""You planning on giving it back?""No.""That's theft.""That's friendship.""That's a crime.""Prove it."Nalia laughed so hard she nearly dropped her phone.Tau shook his head."You two are exhausting.""You're just jealous," Ayira said."Of what?""The chemistry.""I would rather wrestle a crocodile.""Fair."Zuberi finally reclaimed his coffee. The second he took a sip, his face twisted.Ayira grinned."I stole some.""I know.""You watched me.""I know.""You still drank it.""I know.""Then why are you making that face?""Because now it tastes like betrayal."The room erupted again.Even Tafari cracked a smile.Moments like these happened every day.And Ayira loved them. Not because they were extraordinary. But because they weren't.This was home. Not the building. Not the equipment. The people. The friendships. The feeling that no matter how difficult life became outside these walls, she could walk into this room and find her place waiting for her."Alright."Tafari stood."Before we start recording, we need to discuss next month's schedule."Collective groans filled the room."Can we not?" Nalia complained."No.""Why?""Because some of us have responsibilities.""Rude.""Accurate."Ayira raised her hand."I vote we postpone adulthood.""Denied.""I didn't even finish.""Still denied."Tau laughed."I love how nobody argues with Tafari anymore.""Because it's pointless," Zuberi replied."Exactly."The discussion continued.Sponsors.Upcoming guests.A possible live event.Future content ideas. The boring side of podcasting. The side nobody ever saw.By the time Tafari finished, everyone looked ready for a nap."Wonderful," Ayira said. "I now know why people avoid meetings.""You run a company.""I can still hate meetings.""You suggested this one."Ayira paused."Oh."Tafari folded his arms."Exactly.""Still boring."Nalia shook her head."You know, one day we're going to record your hypocrisy and make a compilation.""You'd get ten episodes.""Twenty," Tau corrected."Thirty," Zuberi added.Ayira gasped dramatically."I am being bullied.""No," Zuberi said."This is an intervention."The room exploded. For a moment, Ayira forgot about deadlines.Forgot about audience expectations.Forgot about the pressure of creating content people would actually enjoy. She simply sat there surrounded by people who felt like family. And if someone had told her that one day she would willingly walk away from all of them—She would've laughed in their face."Okay."Tafari clapped his hands."Let's work."Immediately, everyone shifted into position.Headphones on.Microphones adjusted.Cameras checked.Tau moved behind the soundboard.Nalia opened the live comment feed.Ayira straightened in her chair. The familiar routine settled over them.Comfortable.Automatic.Like breathing.Tau lifted a hand."Ready?"Everyone nodded."Three.""Two.""One."The recording light glowed red.And just like that, they were live.Ayira leaned toward her microphone.A smile appeared instantly.Natural.Practiced.Real."Welcome back to Off the Record.""Your favorite podcast," Zuberi added."Debatable," Nalia said."Rude.""Accurate."Laughter echoed through the studio.Ayira shook her head."And today we're discussing friendship.""Friendship breakups, specifically," Tafari clarified. The room quieted."Interesting topic," Tau said."Terrifying topic," Nalia corrected.Ayira nodded thoughtfully."I think friendship breakups hurt worse than relationships sometimes."Nobody immediately responded. For a second, the statement hung in the air.Heavy.Unexpectedly heavy. Then Zuberi spoke. His voice softer than usual."I think what hurts most isn't losing someone."Everyone looked at him."It's realizing too late that you were losing them all along."Silence.A strange silence. The kind nobody could explain.Ayira met his gaze across the table. For a moment, neither of them looked away.Something unreadable flashed through his eyes.Gone before she could understand it.Then Nalia cleared her throat."Well."Everyone turned toward her."That got depressing fast."The tension shattered instantly. The room burst into laughter. The conversation continued. The episode moved on.Life carried forward exactly as it always had.And as Ayira looked around the room—at Tafari rolling his eyes, at Tau adjusting controls, at Nalia scrolling through comments, and at Zuberi sitting beside her—she felt something close to gratitude.Because this was her family.Messy.Chaotic.Annoying.But hers.None of them knew that years later, that recording would become impossible for Zuberi to listen to.Because hidden between the jokes, the laughter, and the teasing—was the sound of a friendship beginning to break. And none of them heard it.
