The Saint Charles mansion had survived hurricanes, scandals, family feuds, federal investigations, and more whispered secrets than anyone could count.
Today it faced something far more terrifying.
Brides.
“Aunt Wanda, there are thirty-seven people in the ballroom.”
“There should be thirty-eight.”
“There are thirty-seven.”
“Then somebody is hiding.”
Valeri laughed as Aunt Wanda marched through the mansion carrying three measuring tapes around her neck like a decorated general preparing for war.
For months workers had transformed one wing of the mansion into Bellucci’s Unique Bridal Boutique.
Rows of wedding dresses lined the walls.
Veils glittered beneath chandeliers.
Mirrors stretched from floor to ceiling.
Fresh roses sat everywhere.
The smell of buttercream drifted from the basement kitchen where Vinny was putting the finishing touches on a towering vanilla wedding cake.
“Nobody touch this cake,” Vinny warned.
Three bridesmaids immediately took another step toward it.
“That means you.”
They backed away.
“Good.”
The grand opening was already attracting attention from all over New Orleans.
Brides who once had to drive downtown could now choose dresses, schedule fittings, taste cakes, and book weddings without ever leaving the Saint Charles property.
It was Aunt Wanda’s dream.
And business was booming.
By noon every fitting room was occupied.
By one o’clock every consultation table was full.
By two o’clock Aunt Wanda looked happier than anyone had seen her in years.
Then the rain started.
Not a drizzle.
Not a shower.
A full Louisiana downpour.
Outside, workers scrambled as decorations for a bridal showcase were soaked within minutes.
Guests rushed under awnings.
Musicians carried equipment indoors.
The beautiful outdoor ceremony demonstration collapsed into chaos.
“Move everything inside!” Aunt Wanda shouted.
The ballroom instantly became crowded.
Brides squeezed between tables.
Photographers tripped over extension cords.
Mothers complained.
Future mothers-in-law complained louder.
Valeri watched the storm through a mansion window.
Something felt strange.
Not dangerous.
Just…off.
She pulled out her tarot cards.
A quick five-card spread.
The Moon landed in the challenge position.
Valeri frowned.
The Moon often meant deception.
Secrets.
Hidden motives.
She glanced around the ballroom.
Everyone appeared happy.
Everyone appeared excited.
Everyone appeared normal.
Which usually meant somebody wasn’t.
Hours later the storm finally passed.
The last guests left.
The final dress was covered.
The lights dimmed.
Vinny carried leftover cake downstairs.
Aunt Wanda counted deposits.
Valeri helped straighten chairs.
Then Aunt Wanda froze.
“Who left that?”
“Left what?” Valeri asked.
Aunt Wanda pointed toward the bridal display.
Something white sat beneath the mannequin wearing the boutique’s featured ball gown.
Valeri walked over.
Picked it up.
A folded piece of paper.
No name.
No signature.
Just six words written in black ink.
Some weddings were never meant to happen.
The room suddenly felt colder.
Aunt Wanda laughed nervously.
“Probably somebody’s idea of a joke.”
Maybe.
But Valeri looked down at The Moon card still sitting on the table beside her.
And for the first time since the boutique opened, she wondered if somebody had come to the mansion for more than wedding dresses.
Somebody had come with a purpose.
And this was only the beginning.
PrayerLord, grant us wisdom when things are hidden, courage when we face uncertainty, and faith when shadows gather around us. Protect every heart that enters this mansion and reveal the truth behind every lie. Amen.
