Chapter 1: First Day Jitters
Emily Carter’s POV
The alarm on my phone rang loudly, cutting through the silence of my small dorm room.
7:00 AM.
First day of university.
I stared at the ceiling for a moment, my heart beating faster than usual. Today was supposed to be the start of something new—something better. A fresh beginning away from everything that had hurt me in the past.
I sat up slowly, brushing my hand through my hair.
“New life, Emily,” I whispered to myself. “No mistakes this time.”
But deep down, I wasn’t sure if people like me ever really changed.
People like me… who loved too easily.
Who trusted too fast.
Who stayed too long.
I sighed, got out of bed, and started getting ready for the day.
---
When I finally stepped out of my dorm room, the hallway of Westbridge University was already alive. Students were walking in groups, laughing loudly, dragging suitcases, hugging old friends they hadn’t seen in months.
I felt… out of place.
Like I was watching a world I didn’t fully belong to.
“Hey! You’re a fresher, right?”
I turned quickly to see a girl with curly hair and a bright smile standing beside me.
“Yeah,” I said softly.
“I’m Hailey Brooks,” she said. “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to everything here. First day is always overwhelming.”
I gave a small nod. “I hope so.”
She walked with me for a bit, talking about classes, lecturers, and how crazy campus life could get. I mostly listened, offering small smiles when needed.
But my mind wasn’t fully there.
It kept drifting.
To the fear of being alone.
---
When I got to the lecture hall, I chose a seat near the middle.
Not too visible.
Not too hidden.
Just enough to exist without being noticed.
Students filled the room quickly, noise bouncing off the walls. I opened my notebook and wrote my name on the first page.
Emily Carter
I stared at it for a second.
It looked normal.
But nothing about me felt normal inside.
---
“Is this seat taken?”
I looked up.
A guy stood beside my desk, holding a backpack over one shoulder. He had calm eyes, the kind that didn’t rush anything. There was something about him that felt… steady.
“No,” I said quickly.
He sat down beside me.
“Thanks,” he added.
I nodded slightly and looked away.
But I could feel his presence.
Not loud.
Not annoying.
Just there.
---
Liam Parker’s POV
She didn’t talk much.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Most freshmen came in loud—excited, nervous, trying too hard to fit in.
But her?
She looked like someone carrying something heavy she didn’t want anyone to see.
When I sat beside her, she barely looked at me.
Just a quick glance.
Then silence again.
Interesting.
I liked observing people. It helped me understand them.
And something about her told me one thing clearly:
She didn’t trust easily.
Or maybe… she trusted the wrong people before.
---
Emily Carter’s POV
The lecture started, but I could barely focus.
I kept noticing small things.
Like how the guy beside me—who I now noticed was writing “Liam Parker” on his notebook—didn’t distract me at all.
He wasn’t like the loud boys I was used to.
He just listened.
Wrote notes.
Paid attention.
That was it.
Still… I kept my distance.
Because I had learned something the hard way:
People don’t always stay the way they start.
---
After class ended, students rushed out immediately.
I packed my things slowly.
“Emily, right?”
I paused.
I turned slightly.
Liam was still there.
“Yes,” I replied cautiously.
He nodded. “You seemed lost during the lecture. If you need notes, I can share mine.”
I blinked.
That was unexpected.
“Oh… I’m fine,” I said quickly.
He didn’t push.
Just nodded again.
“Okay. See you around then.”
And then he left.
Simple.
No pressure.
No insistence.
No hidden meaning.
Just… kind.
---
I stood there for a moment after he left, confused by how normal that interaction felt.
No manipulation.
No mixed signals.
No hidden intentions.
Just kindness.
I shook my head slightly.
“No one is that simple,” I whispered to myself.
And I walked out of the lecture hall… not knowing that this was only the beginning of a story that would change everything I thought I understood about love, trust, and people.
Because sometimes…
The people who stay quiet the longest are the ones who change your life the most.
