Summary

Oh, my Leila. I could watch you for years, yet remain completely insignificant to you. There is never a flicker of warmth in your eyes when we speak. But tonight, there is. I spin you high above my head, and you clutch at me with pure trust, smiling as if I’m the best thing that ever happened to you. If only it were true. My mouth is close to your ear as we dance. My heart screams at me to speak, to beg to be loved. Instead I tuck your hair behind your ear and whisper the next dance steps to the song "Three steps back, then one big one towards me." I mentally kick myself for not confessing but it was necessary. I don't want you to freeze in my arms before you run away from me. Maybe my mother was right. I am way too young to be aching like this, losing focus of my dreams just to be better for her, to be successful for my family. Wasn't it my goal to live? To breathe freely, and never go back to that dark, depressing place again? Yet, here I am, exposing myself to a level of pain my heart cannot take. Everyone looks at my size and assumes I can handle anything. But underneath this massive frame of bones and nerves is just a boy who wants to be seen. Who wants to be loved by you. It's always one step forward and three steps back with you. Tonight, we're close because of the agreement hanging over our heads. Tomorrow, you wouldn't want me near you.
