Kyle’s POV

Magistrates Court, Gibraltar

Wednesday, 16 April 2014

Fatima’s brother ran out through the gates of the court so fast, there was nothing stopping him from rushing over to the bookshop ahead just opposite the Magistrates Court. His mother perusing from behind eventually caught up with the little ten year old and joined him inside the shop.

Meanwhile, still hanging behind, Fatima and I slowly followed them, chatting as we approached the large metal gates in front of the courts.

‘Yusuf definitely seems excited to be out,’ I said glancing over at Fatima.

She grinned with an added sigh of relief.

‘Yeah, me too,’ she replied expelling a large exhale. ‘This whole thing has been too much to deal with, I swear.’

‘Indeed,’ I nodded. ‘But at least it’s over now and you can all move forward – provided he learns from his mistakes about mixing with the wrong people.’

Fatima gave out a light chuckle which sounded more serious than it should have been humorous.

‘Mhmm. Oh don’t worry, he won’t anymore. I’ve warned him very clearly.’

I giggled just as Fatima expelled another large breath of exhaustion.

She hadn’t been sleeping very well on the upcoming days of the court hearing, which I couldn’t blame her for.

The whole situation involving Fatima’s little ten year old brother, Yusuf, mixing with the wrong type of group and getting caught trespassing in a house that was reported to have been broken into had turned out to be a complete mix up.

In conclusion, Yusuf was never actually involved with the group responsible for the robbery but he was however present during the trespassing where the police just happened to catch him and the others boys he was with. An unfortunate case of the common “wrong place, wrong time” scenario.

Nevertheless the court issued a warning and dismissed the case, much to Fatima and her family’s relief.

The ordeal hadn’t been easy on Fatima or her mother, Soukaina, but at least now they could both switch off from it knowing everything has been resolved.

I gave her a reassuring smile as I discretely rubbed her hand with my index finger.

‘Thanks,’ she whispered back with a sweet smile.

‘I’m just glad you’re feeling alright now… I was worried about you.’

Fatima blushed and looked aside for a moment. She turned back to me with delight in her eyes.

‘I know… I know how much you worried about us, Kyle, and thanks. But I knew it wasn’t going to turn out bad, and now I can take my mind off everything and relax again.’

‘Good,’ I said. ‘Well, I’ll be here to help with the relaxing,’ I added with a cheeky smirk.

Fatima smirked back as I gave her a little wink of my eye.

When we caught up with Soukaina and Yusuf they were both stood outside the bookshop.

Yusuf was holding a book in his hands that his mother had clearly just bought him. The blue cover portraying a large white envelope floating above a sea of microscopic people very quickly gave away she had bought him a ‘Where’s Waldo’ book.

Classic taste – I smiled to myself.

Soukaina walked up to us.

‘Fatima, we are going home now,’ she said in Arabic. ‘Are you staying out with Kyle?’

‘Yes, mamma, I’m going to stay with him,’ Fatima replied back to her mother in Arabic. ‘I might be going to his house as well,’

I listened in on their conversations and despite not fluently understanding everything they discussed, I still had a better knowledge of it now thanks to Fatima teaching me her language over the past few months.

She could see I was making progress in learning the dialect and I was really grateful for the times we’d spent together learning – and I always showed her my gratitude after every lesson.

Soukaina nodded her head with a look of approval before she turned over at me. As lovely as this woman appeared she never failed to unnerve me when in her presence and her eyes fixed on me.

As strict and stern as she can appear, Soukaina is a very fair and loving mother to her family.

‘Thank you so much for your support, Kyle,’ she said to me in English.

I smiled back as I offered out my hand to her.

‘It was my pleasure, Miss. Bukhari. I’m glad I could be here.’

Soukaina took my hand in her small yet soft hand and shook it gently.

‘Indeed. Thank you,’ she said affectionately.

‘I’ll be home later tonight. Kyle will walk me,’ Fatima added in English.

’OK, I’ll see you later, Fatima. Bsalama,′ Soukaina ended in their traditional goodbye phrase.

Bsalama, mamma.′

‘Goodbye, Kyle,’ Soukaina looked over at me.

Bsalama,′ I replied back. I then looked down at Yusuf as he walked off with his mum. ‘Bye Yusuf.’

‘Bye, Kyle,’ said Yusuf in his soft little voice as he waved his hand at me.

I waved back with a grin on my face.

‘I think Yusuf is really fond of me,’ I said chuckling over at Fatima.

Fatima gave a nod of her head.

‘He is, and he really appreciates you being here for us.’

I turned my entire body directly towards Fatima, once certain both the mother and little brother weren’t looking at us, I wrapped both my arms around her waist to hold her close to me.

‘Well it means a lot to me that I could be here for you guys.’

Fatima blushed once again, expressing a large smile on her face.

‘Well I certainly appreciate you being here just as much.’ She then wrapped her arms around my neck and hugged me tight. ‘And you know I always show my appreciation,’ she whispered in a soft seductive tone into my ear.

Fatima kissed my cheek and as she moved her head back I knew she could tell what I had in mind right now, but we both knew here wasn’t the place to do it and I wasn’t about to go any further with it… not yet at least.

I popped into a nearby shop just beside the courts and bought us both a drink. After paying for the drinks I handed Fatima her bottle of Vimto and opened up my Coca-Cola, raising the bottle up to Fatima.

‘Cheers,’ I said.

‘Cheers,’ she replied as our bottles tapped.
