Chapter 1 : The Man Everyone Feared
The first thing Alessia Moretti learned about powerful men was that they never needed to raise their voices.
The most dangerous ones spoke softly.
They smiled while making decisions that ruined lives. They shook hands while hiding knives behind their backs. They walked into a room and everyone else remembered exactly who held the power.
And Dante Romano was the most dangerous man she had ever met.
Alessia stared through the window of her father’s study, watching the black cars parked outside their family mansion. Too many cars. Too many guards.
Something was wrong.
Her fingers tightened around the letter she had found on her father’s desk.
A letter that had her name on it.
A letter that explained why men she had never seen before were suddenly protecting their house like they were expecting a war.
"Alessia."
Her father’s voice made her turn.
Antonio Moretti stood at the doorway, looking older than he had the day before. The man who had built an empire through fear and respect now looked like someone carrying a burden too heavy to hide.
"What happened?" she asked.
He avoided her eyes.
That scared her more than anything.
"You're leaving tonight."
Alessia frowned. "Excuse me?"
"You will go with the Romano family."
A cold feeling settled in her chest.
The Romano family.
Everyone knew that name.
They weren't the type of people who appeared in newspapers or made public threats. They didn't need to.
Their reputation spoke for them.
"Dad, what are you talking about?"
"Your life is in danger."
A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "And your solution is to send me to another dangerous family?"
Her father stepped closer.
"Alessia, listen to me. This is not a game. There are people who want revenge against this family, and they will use you to get to me."
She looked away.
All her life she had tried to stay away from her family's world. She had studied, worked, built her own dreams. She didn't want power. She didn't want enemies.
She just wanted freedom.
But freedom was something people like her rarely received.
A knock interrupted them.
Three sharp knocks.
Her father froze.
Then the doors opened.
And Dante Romano walked in.
Alessia had heard hundreds of stories about him.
Some said he was ruthless. Some said he had no heart. Some said he was the kind of man who could destroy someone without losing sleep.
But none of those stories prepared her for seeing him.
He was calm. Controlled.
The kind of calm that made people nervous.
His dark hair was perfectly styled, his expression unreadable, and his eyes carried the cold confidence of someone who had never been told no.
His gaze moved around the room before landing on her.
Alessia hated that she immediately felt like he was studying every detail about her.
Like he was trying to figure out her weaknesses.
"Mr. Moretti," Dante said.
"Romano."
The two men exchanged a look that carried years of history.
Alessia crossed her arms.
"So this is the part where everyone talks about my future except me?"
Dante's eyes returned to her.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he replied, "You have a habit of speaking before understanding the situation."
Her eyebrows lifted.
"And you have a habit of assuming people will listen to you."
A silence filled the room.
Her father looked uncomfortable.
But Dante...
Dante almost smiled.
Almost.
"Interesting," he said.
Alessia didn't like that word.
Not from him.
"What exactly is interesting?"
"You're not afraid."
She looked directly at him.
"Maybe I should be?"
Dante stepped closer, but stopped at a respectful distance.
"Everyone should be afraid of something."
"And what are you afraid of?" she asked.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But she noticed.
"Nothing."
It was the answer of a man who had lost too much to admit he could still lose anything.
That night, Alessia Moretti left her home behind.
She didn't know she was walking into a world of secrets, betrayal, and impossible choices.
She didn't know the man waiting for her would become both her greatest threat and her greatest protection.
And she definitely didn't know that the Devil she had been warned about...
Would be the first person willing to burn the world down to keep her alive.
