Chapter 1
Long ago, there were two great kingdoms ruled by two young kings who were bound by a friendship stronger than blood.
One was King Cedric of Italy, a wise and noble ruler admired throughout his land. The other was King Kai of Greece, a brave and charismatic king beloved by his people. Though they belonged to different kingdoms, they had been inseparable since childhood. They studied together, trained together, and shared every joy and sorrow as brothers would.
As the years passed, both princes reached adulthood and entered marriages arranged by their royal families. King Cedric married the graceful Queen Amara, while King Kai wed the elegant Queen Zara. Though their marriages had been arranged, love soon blossomed between the couples, and they became devoted to one another.
After ascending their thrones, the two kings remained as close as ever. Whenever royal duties allowed, they would travel between each other's kingdoms. Their friendship became legendary, and many people spoke of them as an example of loyalty and brotherhood.
For a time, it seemed as though fate had blessed them with perfect lives.
Then came the children.
The Kingdom of Greece was the first to celebrate when Queen Zara gave birth to a son. The palace bells rang throughout the kingdom, and joyous festivities lasted for days.
The boy possessed silky raven-black hair, eyes as dark as polished obsidian, and skin as fair as winter snow. Even as an infant, there was something striking about him, a quiet nobility that made many believe he was destined for greatness.
King Kai and Queen Zara named him Prince Ethan.
Two years later, the Kingdom of Italy was blessed with a daughter. Her arrival brought happiness not only to her parents but to the entire kingdom.
She had beautiful chocolate-brown curls, warm amber eyes that sparkled with mischief and curiosity, and a smile capable of brightening even the darkest day. Many said she looked as though she had stepped out of a fairy tale.
She was named Princess Lily.
The two children grew up together, often visiting each other's kingdoms. However, despite their parents' friendship, Lily and Ethan could hardly spend a day together without arguing.
Ethan, being two years older, carried himself with the confidence of an elder prince. Lily, however, was stubborn, spirited, and never willing to admit defeat.
Whenever they met, they argued.
Whenever they played, they competed.
Whenever they spoke, they challenged one another.
"Lily is impossible," Ethan would often complain.
"And Ethan is unbearably arrogant," Lily would immediately reply.
Their constant quarrels became a source of endless amusement for the kings and queens, who secretly found the children's rivalry entertaining.
One summer, the two royal families decided to travel to India for a grand holiday. Their journey eventually brought them to the magnificent Taj Mahal, whose white marble gleamed beneath the golden afternoon sun.
While Princess Lily wandered through the gardens, admiring the flowers, Queen Amara and Queen Zara sat together enjoying tea upon a royal terrace overlooking the monument.
As they spoke, Queen Amara appeared unusually pale.
"My dear Amara," Queen Zara said gently, setting down her teacup, "you do not seem yourself today. Has something been troubling you?"
Queen Amara offered a faint smile.
"I know not, Zara. For several days I have felt rather unwell."
A shadow of concern crossed Queen Zara's face.
"Have you consulted the royal physicians?"
"I have," Amara replied. "They requested several examinations, and I believe the results are expected today."
Just then, a royal servant approached and bowed respectfully.
"Your Majesties," he said, "forgive my interruption. Her Majesty Queen Amara is requested by the Royal Physician. The examination reports have arrived."
Queen Amara nodded.
"Very well. Inform the physician that I shall come at once."
The servant bowed again before departing.
Queen Zara placed a reassuring hand over her friend's.
"Do not worry, Amara. I am certain it is nothing serious. Go and hear what the physician has to say. Princess Lily shall remain under my care."
A grateful smile touched Amara's lips.
"Thank you, Zara. Your kindness means more than words can express."
With that, Queen Amara departed for the royal residence.
An hour passed.
As the sun began to sink toward the horizon, Queen Zara's unease steadily grew. Amara had not returned, nor had she sent any message.
Unable to ignore her worries any longer, Queen Zara returned to the royal estate and made her way to Amara's chambers.
She knocked gently upon the door.
"Amara? It is I."
No answer came.
After several moments, the door slowly opened.
Queen Amara stood before her, her eyes red and swollen.
Concern flooded Queen Zara's heart.
"Amara, what has happened?"
Without a word, Amara dismissed the guards.
"Leave us."
Once they were alone, Queen Zara stepped closer.
"My dear friend," she said softly, "you are trembling. Please, tell me what troubles you."
At those words, Queen Amara's composure shattered.
Tears streamed down her face as she threw her arms around Queen Zara.
Startled, Zara immediately embraced her.
"There, there," she whispered. "Whatever burden you carry, you need not bear it alone."
For several moments, Queen Amara could do nothing but cry.
Finally, she drew a shaky breath and wiped her tears.
Queen Zara gently held her hands.
"Amara," she said in a calm voice, "speak freely. What did the physicians tell you?"
Queen Amara lowered her gaze.
"The reports..." she whispered.
Her voice broke.
"The reports from today's examinations have returned."
A heavy silence filled the room.
Queen Zara's heart began to pound as she saw fresh tears gather in Amara's eyes.
Something was terribly wrong.
And for the first time that day, fear settled over the palace.
