Chapter 1

The Love He Never Stopped Choosing

Chapter 1 – The Apartment That Still Remembered

Some places never forget.

No matter how many times the furniture is rearranged...

No matter how many memories are buried beneath new routines...

Some walls continue to remember the laughter that once echoed through them.

Aarav Malhotra's apartment was one of those places.

The morning sunlight slipped through the floor-to-ceiling windows, painting golden lines across the hardwood floor. Everything looked exactly the same.

The grey couch.

The bookshelf she had insisted on buying.

The tiny succulent sitting on the kitchen counter because "every home deserves something alive," she had once said.

Nothing had changed.

Except...

She was gone.

Aarav stood in the kitchen, staring at two coffee mugs.

Without thinking, he reached for the white ceramic mug decorated with tiny blue flowers.

Kavya's favorite.

His hand froze.

A bitter smile crossed his face.

"Old habits," he whispered to himself.

He quietly placed it back on the shelf and poured coffee into a plain black mug instead.

Six months.

Six months since she had walked out of this apartment.

Six months since the silence had become louder than every conversation they had ever shared.

His phone buzzed.

Vivaan.

Aarav answered immediately.

"Good morning, sir."

"You found someone?"

"Not yet... but I think I have someone in mind."

Aarav leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Who?"

"Her."

Silence.

Neither of them needed to say her name.

Aarav closed his eyes.

"Kavya?"

"Yes."

Vivaan hesitated.

"I heard from an old college friend that she's been searching for work for weeks."

Aarav tightened his grip on the coffee mug.

"Is she... alright?"

"I don't think so."

Another silence.

Vivaan continued softly,

"I don't think she'd accept help if it came from you."

Aarav gave a small, humorless laugh.

"She shouldn't."

"You still love her, don't you?"

The question lingered in the air.

Aarav looked toward the empty dining table.

For two years, every breakfast had been shared there.

Every Sunday morning had begun with her stealing food from his plate.

Every argument had ended with one of them apologizing over coffee.

Now...

There was only one chair pulled out.

"I never stopped."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"But sometimes loving someone means letting them hate you."

Vivaan didn't argue.

Because he knew the truth.

He knew why Aarav had pushed her away.

He knew what Aarav had sacrificed.

"I'll contact her," Vivaan finally said.

"But she can never know it came from you."

Aarav nodded.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"If she refuses..."

"Don't convince her."

"If she's happier without me..."

"I won't interfere again."

Vivaan didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked through the glass walls of Aarav's office.

The man who had built a million-dollar company looked completely defeated by one empty apartment.

"I'll call you after I talk to her."

The call ended.

Aarav walked into the bedroom.

Her side of the wardrobe was empty.

Except for one thing.

A tiny hair clip.

It had been lying in the same corner for six months.

He picked it up carefully.

The plastic had cracked slightly.

He remembered teasing her the day it broke.

"You have twenty of these."

"No," she'd laughed, "I have twenty-one. This one's special."

"Why?"

"Because you bought it for me."

Aarav closed his hand around it.

Some memories refused to leave.

No matter how much time passed.

Across the city...

Kavya Arora sat at a small wooden table in her rented apartment.

Three unpaid bills lay in front of her.

She checked her bank balance one more time.

It hadn't changed.

She sighed and closed the banking app.

Maybe today would be different.

Maybe one of the companies she had applied to would finally reply.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

She frowned.

Then opened the message.

"Hello. My name is Vivaan Mehta..."

And without realizing it...

The next chapter of her life had just begun.
