Chapter One Summary:
The first temptation does not arrive in secret. It arrives at the table, under warm lights, with every eye in the room pretending not to watch.
Vinny Bellucci is seated in Bellucci’s, calm and composed, with business moving around him like smoke. He is not chasing attention, but attention finds him anyway. A woman approaches with chocolate lava cake, polished smile, and the kind of confidence that says she has practiced getting men to look twice.
She pours the hot chocolate slowly over the dessert, letting it spill open like a secret. Her eyes stay on Vinny. Her hand lingers near the plate. Her invitation is not spoken, but nobody at the table misunderstands it.
Vinny does not flinch. He does not blush. He does not act confused like a boy who does not know what is happening. He knows exactly what she is offering.
That is what makes the moment dangerous.
Because Vinny is not a man without desire. He is not cold. He is not deprived. Women notice him, and some of them are bold enough to test him. The difference is that Vinny has a code. He already crossed the line with Val years ago, and once his heart crossed that line, he did not pretend it meant nothing.
Val is nearby, quiet, watching without begging for reassurance. She knows Vinny. She knows the world he lives in. She knows women will try him, especially because they want to know if the stories are true.
The woman offers Vinny the first bite.
The room stills.
Vinny takes the fork, cuts into the cake, and tastes it with the same calm authority he brings to everything else. Then he sets the fork down, thanks her politely, and turns his chair just enough toward Val that the whole room understands.
No insult. No scene. No weakness.
Just choice.
The woman’s smile tightens because she realizes the truth too late. Vinny Bellucci can be tempted, but he cannot be claimed. Desire may enter the room, but loyalty decides where he goes home.
Later, when the business downstairs settles and the mansion quiets, Vinny brings Val a small plate of chocolate lava cake.
Not the one offered to him.
One he had made fresh.
They sit near the old window above Saint Charles Avenue, where the city glows beneath them and temptation keeps walking the streets.
Val looks at the dessert, then at him.
“You brought me the dangerous one?”
Vinny leans back, calm as midnight.
“No,” he says. “I brought it where it belongs.”
And Val understands.
The first temptation did not end at the table.
It ended with him choosing to share the sweetness with her.
Prayer:
Lord, guard the heart from vanity and wandering eyes.
Let loyalty stand stronger than every temptation. Amen.
