Chapter 1
Love From an Oversized Jacket.
Esther opened her eyes in a strange room, wearing nothing but a man’s oversized jacket.
For most people, waking up in a stranger’s bed would have been terrifying. For Esther, it was almost routine. Addiction and prostitution had long robbed her of any sense of safety in the sprawling Mathare slums.
Across the room sat a man, quietly reading a Bible. Without looking up, he asked gently, “Do you remember anything?”
She frowned. “Only... two men beating me.” She reached for the painful swelling on her head.
“I heard you screaming,” he said. “They were trying to rape you. I managed to fight them off, but one of them struck you with a bottle. You blacked out.”
“My clothes?” she whispered.
“They were torn off during the struggle and washed away by the rain.”
Earlier that evening, Kimani had been attending a church service hosted by a friend in Mathare. As he hurried home through the cold drizzle, he heard desperate screams from a narrow alley. A former bouncer trained in martial arts, he sprinted towards the sound without a second thought. By the time help arrived, the attackers had fled. Seeing she had nothing left to cover herself, Kimani took off his jacket and wrapped it around her. Together with a few residents, they carried her to the chief’s home where she was given a bed for the night. Kimani stayed until morning, not because he had to, but because he wanted to know she was safe.
That morning, Esther met the first man who had ever protected her without expecting anything in return.
As a peer educator, Kimani didn’t fall in love with the woman she was. He fell in love with the woman she could become.
With quiet patience, he helped her leave behind the drugs, the streets, and the life that had nearly destroyed her. Day by day, she rediscovered her dignity, her faith, and finally, herself.
A few years later, Esther walked down the aisle of the very church Kimani had visited by chance on that rainy night. The pastor who had welcomed him officiated the ceremony, and the chief who had given her shelter stood proudly beside them.
The oversized jacket she woke up wearing was never meant to fit her.
But the man who wrapped her in it? That one fit her heart perfectly.
