Chapter One
Shadows of the Nile
For three hundred and forty years, Layla had walked the earth.
Empires had risen beneath the Egyptian sun only to crumble into dust. Kings had ruled, conquerors had fallen, and generations had passed like waves upon the Nile. Through it all, she remained.
To human eyes, she appeared no older than thirty. Her beauty was timeless rather than youthful, framed by a black hijab she wore not out of obligation, but by conviction. It was a part of who she was—a symbol of her faith, her dignity, and the humanity she refused to lose despite the beast that lived within her.
Far beyond the noise of Cairo, on the edge of Egypt's Western Desert, stood an isolated palace hidden from human eyes. Ancient walls surrounded the estate, guarded day and night by warriors who had sworn their lives to a single queen.
Layla bint Kareem.
Queen of the Lycans.
For centuries, she had ruled her people with wisdom, strength, and unwavering discipline. Her kind had survived by remaining hidden, obeying laws older than most civilizations. Humans believed lycans existed only in myths and legends—and that was exactly how Layla intended to keep it.
She had learned long ago that power came at a terrible price.
When she was still a child, rival clans had murdered her parents during a brutal civil war. Overnight, she inherited their throne, their fortune, and the responsibility of protecting an entire race.
She never complained.
She simply endured.
Loneliness became as familiar to her as breathing.
No man of her own kind had ever reached her heart. Suitors came and went throughout the centuries, but none saw beyond the crown resting upon her head. They admired the queen, feared the ruler, respected the warrior...
Yet no one truly knew the woman beneath them all.
Layla had long accepted that perhaps love was never meant for someone destined to live forever.
Until the evening everything changed.
The Nile reflected the colors of the setting sun as Layla stood silently beneath the shade of old trees, watching the city from a distance.
That was when she saw him.
Chapter One (Part Two)
He looked so... ordinary.
There was no royal blood in his veins. No supernatural strength. No legendary destiny that set him apart from the countless souls who crossed Egypt every day.
He was simply a man.
A young carpenter with worn hands and tired shoulders, carrying a stack of carefully crafted wooden boards as though they weighed nothing. Sweat glistened across his forehead after a long day's work, yet a warm smile never left his face.
As he reached the riverbank, two younger boys ran toward him.
"Karim!"
He laughed before they even reached him.
"There you are," he said, setting the wood aside just in time to catch one of them in a playful embrace.
The younger brothers immediately began talking over one another, each trying to tell him about their day first.
Layla watched in silence.
There was something strangely comforting about the scene.
No riches.
No servants.
No throne.
Only a family.
Karim listened patiently to every word, smiling, teasing them, and ruffling their hair before handing each of them a small piece of sweet candy he had bought on his way home.
It couldn't have cost much.
Yet the joy on their faces made it seem like the greatest treasure in the world.
Layla found herself unable to look away.
For centuries she had watched kings bargain for kingdoms and nobles betray one another for wealth.
Yet this poor carpenter possessed something none of them ever had.
Peace.
When the boys ran ahead, Karim remained behind for a moment.
The evening call to prayer echoed across the city.
Without hesitation, he placed the wooden boards gently on the ground.
He performed ablution with water from the Nile's edge as carefully as he could before standing alone beneath the fading golden sky.
Layla instinctively stepped farther into the shadows.
She watched quietly as he raised his hands and began to pray.
His voice was too soft for her to hear.
But she recognized the serenity on his face.
It was the same serenity she herself had searched for throughout the centuries whenever she stood before her Lord.
For the first time in longer than she could remember...
She did not see merely a human.
She saw a soul.
A soul that seemed untouched by greed, pride, or fear.
When Karim finished praying, he smiled toward the sky as though thanking God for another ordinary day.
Then he lifted the wooden boards once again and continued walking home.
Layla remained where she stood.
She could have returned to her palace.
She should have.
Instead...
She followed him.
Keeping to the darkness, unseen and unheard.
She told herself it was only curiosity.
Only curiosity.
But somewhere deep inside her immortal heart...
Something had already begun to awaken.
Chapter One (Part Three)
That night, the palace felt colder than ever.
Moonlight spilled across the polished marble floors as Layla wandered through silent corridors that had once echoed with laughter she could barely remember. Portraits of her ancestors lined the walls, their painted eyes following her with the same solemn dignity that had watched over generations of Lycan rulers.
She had spent centuries believing loneliness was simply the price of immortality.
Tonight, for the first time...
She questioned that belief.
Her chief adviser, Faris, stood waiting outside the royal library.
He bowed respectfully.
"Your Majesty."
"You wished to report something?" Layla asked.
"The eastern clans have settled another border dispute. There is nothing that requires your immediate attention."
She nodded.
"Then why do you look troubled?"
Faris hesitated.
"I could ask Your Majesty the same question."
A faint smile crossed Layla's lips.
"You have served my family for over two hundred years."
"I have."
"You know when something burdens my heart."
"I do."
Silence settled between them.
Finally, Faris spoke carefully.
"You left the palace today."
"I did."
"Was it important?"
Layla looked toward the moon shining through the tall windows.
"I met someone."
The old adviser frowned ever so slightly.
"A Lycan lord?"
She shook her head.
"A human."
For the first time in many years, genuine surprise appeared on Faris's face.
"A human?"
"His name is Karim."
The name lingered in the quiet hall.
Faris lowered his eyes.
"Forgive me, Your Majesty... but humans live brief lives. They are not part of our world."
"I know."
"Our laws exist for a reason."
"I know."
"They fear us."
"I know."
"Then why—"
"Because..." Layla interrupted softly, "...for the first time in three hundred and forty years, I looked at someone and forgot that I was a queen."
Faris had no answer.
He had watched Layla grow from an orphaned child into the most respected ruler the Lycans had known in generations.
He had seen her face armies without fear.
He had seen her bury friends whose lives ended while hers continued.
But he had never seen hope in her eyes.
Until tonight.
After dismissing him, Layla entered the royal library alone.
Thousands of books surrounded her—histories, philosophies, ancient Lycan records, manuscripts older than entire kingdoms.
She searched for distraction.
She found none.
Every page reminded her how long eternity truly was.
Every silence brought back the image of a humble carpenter smiling beside the Nile.
She closed the final book with a quiet sigh.
"This is foolish," she whispered to herself.
She had ruled nations hidden from mankind.
She commanded warriors powerful enough to shake mountains.
Yet somehow...
One ordinary man had disturbed the peace she had protected for centuries.
Outside her window, the lights of Cairo shimmered in the distance.
Without realizing it, her eyes searched the horizon.
Wondering...
Whether Karim had reached home safely.
