Prologue
The mountain trembled.
At first, it was only a deep, muffled rumble echoing from somewhere in the distance. A few hikers stopped in their tracks, exchanging puzzled glances. The sun still hung high above the peaks, the sky was cloudless, and the snow glittered beneath the bright winter light.
A little boy was packing a snowball when the mountain spoke again.
This time, much louder.
The ground shuddered beneath their feet.
“Mom... what was that?” he asked, his voice uncertain.
His mother had no answer.
High above them, the snow at the top of the slope began to move.
At first, slowly.
Then, in a single heartbeat, it broke free.
“Avalanche!” someone screamed.
The warning vanished beneath the deafening roar.
A towering wall of snow thundered down the mountainside. Trees snapped in half. Massive boulders tumbled into the valley. The air filled with a blinding cloud of powdered snow. People ran, but no one was fast enough.
The mountain lodge disappeared.
The parking area disappeared.
The hiking trail disappeared.
Seconds later, silence returned.
The emergency alert reached rescue coordination centers across several countries at once.
The dispatcher’s voice remained calm, yet every word carried urgency.
“Large-scale avalanche in the Alps. Dozens of people reported missing. Local rescue units are responding, but immediate international assistance has been requested.”
Less than thirty seconds later, red emergency lights flashed to life inside a hidden mountain base deep in Switzerland.
A siren echoed through the facility.
Corridors that had been silent only moments before suddenly filled with movement.
Young men and women rushed to collect their gear.
No one panicked.
Everyone knew exactly what to do.
The loudspeaker crackled to life.
“Alpha Team. Departure in three minutes. Avalanche rescue operation. All assigned personnel report to the hangar.”
The massive hangar doors slowly opened.
Inside, an orange-and-white rescue helicopter stood ready, its rotor blades already spinning.
A tall, gray-haired man surveyed the assembled team.
Dr. Elias Reinhardt had spent more than thirty years on rescue missions. Deep lines marked his face, but his eyes were as sharp as they had been in his youth.
“Status report,” he said firmly.
“Equipment checked.”
“Medical supplies ready.”
“Avalanche transceivers operational.”
“Drones fully charged.”
Reinhardt nodded.
“Good.”
For a brief moment, the hangar fell silent.
“Listen carefully. There are people out there waiting for help. We are not heroes. We are not flying out there to prove what we’re capable of. We are going because someone may still be alive. As long as there is even the slightest chance of that, we do not turn back. Is that understood?”
“Yes, sir!” the team answered in unison.
He looked at each of them one last time.
“Then let’s move.”
A few minutes later, the helicopter was flying over the snow-covered peaks.
Below them, everything was white.
The avalanche had carved a path hundreds of meters wide across the mountainside. Only a few broken beams from the mountain lodge remained visible above the snow.
The pilot began circling slowly.
“Looking for a landing zone.”
One of the rescuers scanned the landscape through the window.
“No visible movement.”
“Thermal cameras?” Reinhardt asked.
“Too much snow. We can’t see through it.”
He remained silent for a moment.
Then his gaze settled on a young woman who had been sitting quietly until now.
“Emma.”
She looked up.
“You’re up.”
Emma Carter took a slow, steady breath.
The moment the helicopter’s skids touched the snow, she jumped out. Kneeling on the frozen ground, she removed one of her thick gloves and pressed her bare palm against the icy surface.
She closed her eyes.
Everything around her faded away.
She no longer heard the helicopter.
She no longer heard the wind.
She simply listened.
Several long seconds passed.
Then she slowly opened her eyes.
“Thirteen.”
Every head turned toward her.
“There are thirteen people still alive beneath the snow.”
No one spoke.
Then Reinhardt smiled.
“Then we don’t have a second to waste.”
The rescue team sprang into action.
Far below, television cameras were already capturing the unfolding operation. The world would see an elite rescue team performing yet another miracle.
What no one would ever learn was that their extraordinary training was only part of the truth.
They carried a secret.
A secret guarded for centuries.
And before long, it would draw them into a danger unlike anything the Elite Rescue Academy had ever prepared its cadets to face.
