Author's Note
Hey, Wildfire Family!
We officially made it to the end of Book 1! I am still reeling from that final cliffhanger, and I know your minds are spinning with theories. First of all, thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading, loving, reacting, and going on this wild, emotional journey with Kael and Izzy.
Because Book 1 was an absolute 91-chapter marathon, I am taking a much-needed holiday to rest, recharge, and meticulously plot out the massive, ancient world waiting for us on the other side of the mountain. Book 2 will officially begin updating in October!
To hold you over, I have left you a very special, exclusive teaser below.
CRITICAL STEP FOR READERS:
Before you read the teaser, please hit the ‘Heart’ button and add The Queen of Wildfire to your Reading Lists right now! This ensures that Inkitt will send a direct push notification to your phone the exact second Chapter 1 drops in October (Or maybe sooner... cough cough).
You don’t want to miss it!
Now... let’s take a little peek into the hidden empire. See the teaser below.
The air on this side of the mountain wasn't just thicker from the heat.
Goddess, this kingdom was a far cry from the cold and starshine where Izzy came from. The place she loved.
It also tasted different. Like iron and sweat and old magic.
Izzy wasn't sure if she liked it or if it left a bitter taste on her tongue. She was used to the snow. Her heart still belonged somewhere she could no longer reach...
Izzy ducked, the wind of a heavy red-metal blade whistling a mere fraction of an inch above her head. She spun on her heel, her instincts screaming as she drove her heel upward in a lethal, blindingly fast sweeping kick. It was a technique that landed any warrior on their ass in Draven. Grey always told her how ancient and terrifying her fighting stance was. Yet...
It didn’t even make him blink.
With a fluid, effortlessly terrifying grace, a massive hand caught her ankle mid-air. A sudden, violent twist of his wrist sent Izzy flying across the dirt ring and she landed like a sack of potatoes in the puddle of mud.
“Again.”
A deep, gravelly voice commanded.
“And stop fighting like you're just a regular she-wolf. You are our Ignifera. You carry the eternal flame in your soul, Isadora. Use it!”
Izzy pushed herself up, spitting dirt from her lips, her eyes blazing a dangerous dark hue. Everyone called her that here. She knew Isadora was her name, but Ignifera? It was her people's chosen nickname for her. A wildfire. Just like Kael used to say...
The truth was that she still felt like Izzy. Just Izzy. Not an eternal flame yet for a whole-ass kingdom or even a Queen. She was still getting used to it.
Izzy looked up now at the mountain of a man standing at the center of the training ground. He was fucking magnificent. She would at least give him that. He was a colossal force of raw, lethal beauty and his rich caramel skin glistened with sweat beneath the strange, ancient armor of the hidden realm. A long, dark braid of hair hung down his back, framing a face that belonged on a strong, arrogant jaw and all of it was brought together by piercing green eyes. Almost as green as the fields which surrounded them.
Maxim. That was his name and he was Head of the Queen’s Guard. The greatest warrior the hidden empire had ever produced. This meant she had to see him all-the-fucking time. It wasn't that Izzy disliked him. Its just...
He was harsh. He didn’t pussyfoot around her royal title, and he didn’t coddle her grief at still not having found Kael. He was a bad influence on her mood and a match struck against her volatile temper. Maxim was too much... He provoked her, pushed her, and dragged out a side of her that wasn’t pretty. He wanted her to burn hot. He wanted her to be too much.
As she stood up, brushing the mud from her leathers, Izzy felt her backbone hardening. Those green eyes followed her every movement.
Izzy's hand instinctively flew to her neck and her fingers brushed the marked skin beneath her collar.
Pine. Earth. Musk. Home. Calm.
Kael.
The fated mate bond was still there, humming faintly beneath her skin, letting her know her Alpha was still breathing, but it was fading.
Slowly, slowly... it was going cold.
She was running out of time. She needed to gather the empire’s resources and tear the mountain down to find him, but her new council refused to let her leave. ‘Draven is under seige and not safe at the moment’ they had warned her. ‘We have more control over the situation than you think. We are sending spies over the border constantly. You stay here.’
She felt torn between two worlds. One more of a choice than the other. It did nothing to calm the rage she carried with her after leaving Draven. And now she could direct all of it right at the brooding giant in front of her.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve, Maxim.”
Izzy hissed, her skin growing scorching hot as living embers began to shimmer through her vibrant red hair. She marched right up to him, stopping inches from his broad chest, forcing herself to look up into those smug green eyes.
“Who the hell do you think you are, speaking to me like that? I am the bloodline of this realm. I am your Queen.”
Maxim didn’t bow. He didn’t flinch. Instead, a cocky, infuriating smirk slowly spread across his handsome face. He leaned down, his breath brushing her ear as he whispered with absolute, unbothered arrogance...
“I know exactly who you are, Isadora. And as for who I am? I’m your future husband.”
