Chapter 1

Bellucci’s 18 Carat Rose Gold Cake

Chapter 1: The Peace Rose Gala

Scripture:“A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.”— Proverbs 11:1

Five-Card Tarot Spread:The Empress — luxury, beauty, the cake, Valeri’s presenceSeven of Swords — theft, deception, a planned switchKing of Pentacles — old money, jewelers, gold, mafia wealthThe Moon — secrets hidden under glamourJustice — false gold will be weighed against truth

Italian Quote:“Non è tutto oro quello che luccica.”Not all that glitters is gold.

The cake looked too beautiful to trust.

That was the first thing Valeri thought when Vinny Bellucci rolled it into the French Quarter ballroom beneath three crystal chandeliers and twelve arrangements of Peace roses.

It stood four tiers tall, iced in smooth cream cheese frosting, glazed in rose-gold drip, dressed with candied carrots, sugared rose petals, and flakes of edible gold leaf that caught the light like stolen jewelry.

Vinny had named it the 18 Carat Rose Gold Cake.

The people at the gala clapped like they were admiring dessert.

Valeri knew better.

In New Orleans, nobody clapped that hard unless somebody was lying.

Vinny stood beside the cake in his black suit, calm as a chapel statue, one hand tucked in his pocket, his eyes moving over the room. Not flirting. Not smiling for the rich women pretending not to stare. Watching.

That was Vinny.

He could make a cake look like a blessing and a room full of millionaires look like suspects.

“You see it?” he asked quietly.

Valeri stood close enough that her shoulder almost brushed his sleeve.

“The roses?” she asked.

“The roses, the men by the bar, the woman in the crown-gold bracelet, and the jeweler who has checked his pocket four times since we came in.”

Valeri looked.

A silver-haired man near the champagne tower kept touching the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket. He was trying to look casual, but fear always had a rhythm. Tap. Look. Smile. Tap again.

“Who is he?”

“Marcellus Vetrano,” Vinny said. “Jeweler. French Quarter. Old family. Older debts.”

“Bellucci debts?”

Vinny’s mouth barely moved.

“Everybody has Bellucci debts. Some just remember later than others.”

The ballroom glittered with money that had washed itself clean too many times. Diamonds flashed under candlelight. Gold chains rested against silk gowns. Men from every old table in the city smiled with dead eyes.

Bellucci. Romano. Alto. Caronna. Lipari.

Not all seated together.

Not all admitting they knew one another.

That was how New Orleans mafia behaved in public.

Separate tables. Shared sins.

A server passed with champagne. Valeri declined. Vinny didn’t reach for one either. He did not need a glass in his hand to look powerful.

On the dessert table, the first slice of carrot cake had already been plated for the charity chairwoman. Classic carrot cake. Nantes carrots. Cream cheese frosting. Rose-gold sugar. Peace roses surrounding the silver cake knife.

Then the lights flickered.

Not enough for panic.

Just enough for a thief.

A woman gasped near the auction display.

Marcellus Vetrano turned white.

His hand flew to his jacket again.

This time, he did not pretend.

“My necklace,” he said.

The room went still.

Vinny did not move.

Valeri’s eyes went to the auction case near the front of the ballroom. Inside, beneath velvet and glass, rested a rose-gold necklace shaped like a crown of tiny roses.

Only now the piece looked wrong.

Too bright.

Too perfect.

Too empty.

Marcellus shoved past two donors and reached the case. “That is not mine.”

The charity chairwoman laughed nervously. “Mr. Vetrano, surely—”

“That is not mine,” he repeated. “That necklace belonged to my grandmother. Eighteen-carat rose gold. Handworked in Palermo. That is a fake.”

A Romano cousin near the bar muttered, “Here we go.”

An Alto man smiled like he had been waiting for blood.

A Lipari woman crossed herself.

Vinny finally stepped forward.

Not fast.

Not loud.

Just enough that the room remembered who had brought the cake and who owned silence when he wanted it.

“Nobody leaves,” Vinny said.

A few people looked offended.

Nobody moved.

Valeri opened her purse and took out her tarot deck.

One of the rich women whispered, “Is she serious?”

Valeri looked at her.

“Very.”

She laid five cards on a small cocktail table beside the cake.

The Empress.

Seven of Swords.

King of Pentacles.

The Moon.

Justice.

Vinny glanced down.

“Talk to me, Val.”

“The Empress is the cake. The display. The woman everybody is looking at so they don’t see the thief.”

His eyes stayed on the room.

“Seven of Swords?”

“The switch was planned before the lights flickered.”

“King of Pentacles?”

“Old money. A man with gold. Maybe Marcellus. Maybe the person who owns him.”

Vinny’s jaw tightened.

“The Moon?”

“Something hidden inside the pretty version.”

“And Justice?”

Valeri looked toward the rose-gold necklace in the case.

“Weigh it.”

Vinny gave one nod to a Bellucci cousin standing near the service door. “Lock the back hallway.”

The cousin disappeared.

Marcellus was sweating now. “You have no authority here, Bellucci.”

Vinny turned his head slowly.

“No?”

The room got quieter.

Valeri walked to the display case. The fake necklace sat under glass, glittering like a lie trying too hard. Beside it, one Peace rose had fallen from the arrangement.

She bent down.

Under the rose was a tiny charm.

A carrot.

Not a sugar carrot from Vinny’s cake.

A real charm.

Rose gold.

Small enough to hide inside a clasp.

Sharp enough to cut skin.

Valeri picked it up with a napkin and held it toward Vinny.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“Vinny?”

He took the charm and turned it under the chandelier light.

On the back was one engraved letter.

B.

The charity chairwoman whispered, “What does that mean?”

Vinny closed his fingers around the charm.

“It means somebody came into my city, touched my dessert table, touched old gold, and left my initial like an invitation.”

Valeri felt the air shift.

This was no ordinary theft.

A stolen necklace was one thing.

A fake placed under lights was another.

But leaving a rose-gold carrot charm beside a Bellucci cake was not evidence.

It was a message.

From the front of the ballroom, a woman in a pale rose gown began to cry quietly. Her bracelet flashed pink under the candles.

Valeri noticed it.

Crown setting.

Rose gold.

Peace rose clasp.

Matching the fake necklace.

Vinny noticed Valeri noticing.

“Who is she?” Valeri asked.

Vinny’s voice lowered.

“Evelina Vetrano. Marcellus’s niece.”

Evelina looked straight at them.

Then she looked away too fast.

A gunshot cracked outside the courtyard.

The ballroom screamed.

Vinny moved in front of Valeri before the echo finished.

Not dramatic.

Instinct.

The way a man shields what belongs under his protection before he even thinks about himself.

Another Bellucci cousin burst through the side door.

“Vinny,” he said. “Black Beamer got hit.”

Vinny’s eyes hardened.

“My car?”

“One shot through the windshield. And this was left under the wiper.”

He handed Vinny a folded ivory card.

Valeri already knew what would be on it before Vinny opened it.

Gold dust.

Rose petals.

One sentence written in dark ink.

Not all that glitters belongs to the crown.

Valeri looked back at the tarot spread.

The Moon seemed darker now.

Justice looked patient.

Vinny folded the card once and slipped it into his jacket.

Marcellus Vetrano shouted, “I want the police!”

Vinny turned toward him.

“No, you don’t.”

Marcellus froze.

Vinny stepped closer, voice low enough that only the front half of the room could hear.

“Because if the police come first, they investigate a necklace. If I investigate first, I find out why someone used my cake, my roses, my car, and my name.”

Valeri stood beside him, the rose-gold carrot charm still glowing in her mind.

Twelve roses.

Twelve cakes.

Twelve kinds of gold.

The first clue had been Peace.

But peace was already dead.

Vinny looked at Valeri.

“We’re going home through the back.”

“To the attic?”

“To the attic.”

The old mansion on Saint Charles would be waiting. The servants’ staircase. The museum rooms above. The underground kitchen below. The place where Bellucci truth lived behind walls tourists would never see.

But before they left, Valeri turned back to the cake.

One slice was missing.

Not served.

Cut clean and taken.

On the empty plate, someone had pressed a single orange carrot shaving into the shape of a cross.

Valeri crossed herself.

Vinny saw it and whispered, “This just became family.”

Outside, thunder rolled over New Orleans.

Inside, the rose-gold cake glittered under the chandeliers like it knew every secret in the room.

Prayer:Lord, cover this house and every soul walking into danger. Let false gold be exposed, let stolen truth rise from the dark, and let no enemy hide behind beauty, wealth, or family name. Give Vinny wisdom, give Valeri sight, and keep their hearts steady when the city starts lying. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
