Chapter One- The Childhood She Never Had
Chapter One
The Childhood She Never Had
"Some people grow up with bedtime stories. Others grow up with survival stories. The saddest part? Trauma grows up with them."
If you met her today, you would probably never guess what she had been through. She smiled a little too brightly, laughed a little too loudly, and always made sure everyone around her felt loved. She was the kind of girl who checked on everyone else's feelings before anyone asked about hers. People admired her kindness. They called her cheerful. Some even wished they had a life like hers.
But no one ever wondered why the happiest people often hide the deepest pain.
Behind that smile was a little girl who had spent her entire childhood wishing that home felt like home.
For most people, home is a place of comfort. A place where you feel safe after a long day. For her, home was the place she feared the most. Every morning began with uncertainty, and every evening ended with silence so heavy that it hurt more than words. She never knew what kind of day it would be. Some days were calm enough to give her hope. Other days were filled with shouting, crying, and fear.
Her father's anger controlled the entire house.
It didn't matter how small the reason was. A tiny mistake, a misunderstanding, or sometimes nothing at all could turn an ordinary day into a nightmare. Whenever he lost his temper, everyone became quiet. No one dared to speak. No one dared to cry. They simply waited for the storm to pass.
She was just a child, but she had already learned lessons that no child should ever have to learn. She learned to recognize anger from the sound of footsteps. She learned that silence was sometimes safer than speaking. She learned to hide her tears because crying only made things worse.
Children should grow up worrying about homework, birthdays, cartoons, and school trips.
She grew up worrying about whether today would be another day filled with fear.
Then one day, everything changed.
Her father's anger crossed every limit. In a moment of uncontrollable rage, he tried to trap her, her mother, and her brother in a terrifying situation that could have ended their lives. She didn't fully understand what was happening. She only knew one thing.
She had to save her family.
Terrified, she ran to her grandmother's house, crying and begging for help. She believed that once the adults arrived, everything would finally change. She thought someone would protect them.
Instead, she heard the words that stayed with her forever.
"That's just how your father is."
"He gets angry."
"He'll calm down."
Those words broke something inside her.
Not because they were shouted.
But because they made her realize that even the adults had accepted her fear as something normal.
That day, she stopped expecting people to save her. She slowly built walls around her heart and convinced herself that the only person she could truly rely on was herself.
Years passed, but the memories never did.
Loud voices still made her heart race. Sudden arguments made her freeze. She apologized for things that weren't even her fault because somewhere deep inside, she believed everything was her responsibility.
Nobody noticed.
At school, she smiled.
With friends, she laughed.
On social media, she looked happy.
People saw a cheerful girl.
No one saw the frightened little child she still carried inside.
Trauma doesn't always leave visible scars.
Sometimes it hides in the way someone overthinks.
Sometimes it hides in the way someone apologizes too much.
Sometimes it hides behind a smile so convincing that no one ever thinks to ask, "Are you really okay?"
She was only fifteen.
She thought surviving her childhood was the hardest part.
She was wrong.
